Experimental determination of metal fuel point defect parameters
Nuclear metallic fuels are one of many options for advanced nuclear fuel cycles because they
provide dimensional stability, mechanical integrity, thermal efficiency, and irradiation resistance
while the associated pyro-processing is technically relevant to concerns about proliferation and
diversion of special nuclear materials. In this presentation we will discuss recent success that we
have had in studying isochronal annealing of damage cascades in Pu and Pu(Ga) arising from the
self-decay of Pu as well as the annealing characteristics of non-interacting point defect
populations produced by ion accelerator irradiation. Comparisons of the annealing properties of
these two populations of defects arising from very different source terms are enlightening and
point to complex defect and mass transport properties in the plutonium specimens which we are
only now starting to understand as a result of many follow-on studies. More importantly
however, the success of these measurements points the way to obtaining important mass
transport parameters for comparison with theoretical predictions or to use directly in existing and
future materials modelling of radiation effects in nuclear metallic fuels. The way forward on
such measurements and the requisite theory and modelling will be discussed.

Resolvability of defect ensembles with positron annihilation studies
Recent advances in the use of positron annihilation to study defect ensembles in and on the surfaces of metals, are pointing the way towards studies where particular positron-electron annihilation modes may be identified and studied in the presence of one another. Although a great deal is understood about the annihilation of positrons in ostensibly defect-free metals, much less is understood when the positron annihilates in complex defect systems such as liquid metals, amorphous solids, or at or near the vacuum-solid interface. In this paper the results of three experiments, all of which demonstrate means by which we can resolve various poistron annihilation channels from one another, are discussed
The symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in PuCoGa
The symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in single-crystalline
PuCoGa ( K) is investigated via zero- and transverse-
field muon spin relaxation (SR) measurements, probing the possible
existence of orbital and/or spin moments (time reversal-symmetry violation TRV)
associated with the superconducting phase and the in-plane magnetic-field
penetration depth in the mixed state, respectively. We find no
evidence for TRV, and show that the superfluid density, or alternatively,
, are for . Taken together these measurements are consistent with an even-parity
(pseudo-spin singlet), d-wave pairing state.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
New limits on the ordered moments in alpha-Pu and Ga-stabilized delta-Pu
We present the first muon spin relaxation measurements ever performed on
elemental Pu, and set the most stringent upper limits to date on the magnitude
of the ordered moment in alpha-Pu and delta-stabilized Pu (alloyed with 4.3 at.
% Ga). Assuming a nominal hyperfine coupling field of 1 kOe per Bohr magneton
we set an upper limit of 0.001 Bohr magnetons for both materials at T = 4 K.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Submitted to 10th International Conference on

An outline of positron measurements of superconducting oxides
Positron measurements on superconducting oxides have gone through an evolution from divergent results of low statistical precision on samples of suspect quality to convergent results of higher statistical precision on high quality samples. We outline the elements affecting the progress of these experiments and questions that can be addressed at our present state of the art. 11 refs
COMPARISON OF THE ELECTRON MOMENTUM DISTRIBUTION OF SOLID AND LIQUID NI AS MEASURED BY POSITRONS
Dans ce travail on compare les densités de moment électroniques mesurées par positrons qui s'éliminent dans un réseau parfait de Ni, dans les lacunes et dans le Ni liquide. Les techniques expérimentales et les méthodes d'analyse sont discutées.This paper compares the measured electron momentum densities seen by positrons annihilating in the defect-free Ni lattice, in vacancies and in liquid Ni. The experimental techniques and analysis method are also described

Resolvability of positron decay channels
Many data analysis treatments of positron experiments attempt to resolve two or more positron decay or exist channels which may be open simultaneously. Examples of the need to employ such treatments of the experimental results can be found in the resolution of the constituents of a defect ensemble, or in the analysis of the complex spectra which arise from the interaction of slow positrons at or near the surfaces of solids. Experimental one- and two-dimensional angular correlation of annihilation radiation experiments in Al single crystals have shown that two defect species (mono- and divacancies) can be resolved under suitable conditions. Recent experiments at LLNL indicate that there are a variety of complex exit channels open to positrons interacting at surfaces, and ultimely these decay channels must also be suitably resolved from one another. 6 refs., 4 figs

A molecular dynamics study of the {Sigma}11 <1{bar 1}0>/(113)(133) grain boundary in Al and Al-Cu
We present results of molecular dynamics simulation studies of Cu segregation to the {Sigma}11{l_angle}1{bar 1}0{r_angle}/(113)(113) grain boundary (GB) in Al. Simulations were performed with EAM potentials for Al and Al-Cu. Results predict that Cu atoms tend to order along either side of the interface even in the pure symmetrical tilt boundary, forming alternating chains along the {l_angle}{bar 3}{bar 3}2{r_angle} direction. Nucleation of the chains is driven by a change in the local atomic level stress induced by the pre-existing Cu atoms at the GB

High intensity positron beam and angular correlation experiments at Livermore
A positron beam apparatus that produces a variable energy positron beam with sufficient intensity to perform new positron experiments in an ultrahigh vacuum environment has been installed at the Lawrence Livermore 100 MeV electron linac. We have installed two large area position sensitive gamma-ray detectors to measure angular correlations in two dimensions and a separate highly collimated detector to measure positronium energy distributions by time-of-flight velocity determination. Data from measurements on single crystals of Cu will be described
