    Interference, reduced action, and trajectories

    Instead of investigating the interference between two stationary, rectilinear wave functions in a trajectory representation by examining the two rectilinear wave functions individually, we examine a dichromatic wave function that is synthesized from the two interfering wave functions. The physics of interference is contained in the reduced action for the dichromatic wave function. As this reduced action is a generator of the motion for the dichromatic wave function, it determines the dichromatic wave function's trajectory. The quantum effective mass renders insight into the behavior of the trajectory. The trajectory in turn renders insight into quantum nonlocality.Comment: 12 pages text, 5 figures. Typos corrected.     Child mortality in rural Malawi: HIV closes the survival gap between the socio-economic strata

    As HIV-related deaths increase in a population the usual association between low socioeconomic status and child mortality may change, particularly as death rates from other causes decline.METHODS/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: As part of a demographic surveillance system in northern Malawi in 2002-6, covering a population of 32,000, information was collected on socio-economic status of the households. Deaths were classified as HIV/AIDS-related or not by verbal autopsy. Poisson regression models were used to assess the association of socio-economic indicators with all-cause mortality, AIDS-mortality and non-AIDS mortality among children. There were 195 deaths in infants, 109 in children aged 1-4 years, and 38 in children aged 5-15. All-cause child mortality in infants and 1-4 year olds was similar in households with higher and lower socio-economic status. In infants 13% of deaths were attributed to AIDS, and there were no clear trends with socio-economic status for AIDS or non-AIDS causes. For 1-4 year olds 27% of deaths were attributed to AIDS. AIDS mortality was higher among those with better built houses, and lowest in those with income from farming and fishing, whereas non-AIDS mortality was higher in those with worse built houses, lowest in those with income from employment, and decreased with increasing household assets.CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: In this population, since HIV infection among adults was initially more common among the less poor, childhood mortality patterns have changed. The usual gap in survival between the poor and the less poor has been lost, but because the less poor have been disproportionately affected by HIV, rather than because of relative improvement in the survival of the poorest

    Behavior of Forged S-816 Turbine Blades in Steady-state Operation of J33-9 Turbojet Engine with Stress-rupture and Metallographic Evaluations / by F. B.garrett, C. A. Gyorgak, and J. W. Weeton

    An investigation was conducted to determine the behavior of recently produced, forged S-816 turbine blades in a full-scale turbojet engine, and in particular, the scatter in performance of the alloy. The turbine blades were operated as continuously as possible at a temperature of 1500 degrees F and a centrifugal stress of 21,500 pounds per square inch. The operating lives of the turbine blades varied from 181 to 539 hours, a range of 358 hours. Stress-rupture properties of specimens cut from blade airfoils also varied considerably, as much as 1257 hours at 20,000 pounds per square inch and 1500 degrees F. Since the variability of scatter of stress-rupture data is greater than that of blade performance, the scatter is probably caused by variations in the properties of the forged blades rather than by variations caused by engine operation or installation of the blades. Metallographic examinations were made to determine possible causes of the scatter and although numerous differences in microstructures of blades were found, no consistent tendencies were observed and the findings did not permit an explanation of the scatter of blade performance. The results of the metallographic examinations and of the physical tests indirectly indicated variables in the fabricating method caused the scatter in properties

    Formalizing Size-Optimal Sorting Networks: Extracting a Certified Proof Checker

    Since the proof of the four color theorem in 1976, computer-generated proofs have become a reality in mathematics and computer science. During the last decade, we have seen formal proofs using verified proof assistants being used to verify the validity of such proofs. In this paper, we describe a formalized theory of size-optimal sorting networks. From this formalization we extract a certified checker that successfully verifies computer-generated proofs of optimality on up to 8 inputs. The checker relies on an untrusted oracle to shortcut the search for witnesses on more than 1.6 million NP-complete subproblems.Comment: IMADA-preprint-c

    GRIDKIT: Pluggable overlay networks for Grid computing

    A `second generation' approach to the provision of Grid middleware is now emerging which is built on service-oriented architecture and web services standards and technologies. However, advanced Grid applications have significant demands that are not addressed by present-day web services platforms. As one prime example, current platforms do not support the rich diversity of communication `interaction types' that are demanded by advanced applications (e.g. publish-subscribe, media streaming, peer-to-peer interaction). In the paper we describe the Gridkit middleware which augments the basic service-oriented architecture to address this particular deficiency. We particularly focus on the communications infrastructure support required to support multiple interaction types in a unified, principled and extensible manner-which we present in terms of the novel concept of pluggable overlay networks
