    Room-Temperature Continuous-Wave Vertical-Cavity Single-Quantum-Well Microlaser Diodes

    Room-temperature continuous and pulsed lasing of vertical-cavity, single-quantum-well, surface-emitting microlasers is achieved at ~983nm. The active Ga[sub][0-8]In[sub][0-2]As single quantum well is 100 [angstroms] thick. These microlasers have the smallest gain medium volumes among lasers ever built. The entire laser structure is grown by molecular beam epitaxy and the microlasers are formed by chemically assisted ion-beam etching. The microlasers are 3-50-μm across. The minimum threshold currents are 1.1 mA (pulsed) and 1.5 mA (CW)

Teniendo en cuenta que son familias vulnerables lo cual nos impulsa a investigar y luego intervenir dicha comunidad haciendo especial énfasis en las familias. El proceso de investigación se inicia con un acercamiento a la comunidad, en la cual se detecta que una de las principales falencias dentro de las familias es la falta de afecto. Este tema es muy importante ya que es determinante en la formación y desarrollo satisfactorio de cada uno de los miembros de las familias. En este inicio se presenta la descripción de la problemática, sus objetivos, justificación, luego de haber utilizado algunos instrumentos de investigación y recolección de información como el metaplan, la entrevista, la encuesta. A partir de los anteriores elementos se procede a realizar un plan de intervención con el fin obtener trascendencia en la comunidad, habiendo adquirido las bases conceptuales, poblacionales, legales etc. Este trabajo pretende tener el mayor impacto dentro de las familias seleccionadas como muestra, con el fin de extenderlo al resto de la comunidad que hace parte de la Fundación.No Abstrac

    Vertical-cavity, surface-emitting lasers have great potential owing to their inherent two-dimensional geometry and very small gain nedium volumes which are essential to low threshold currents. Possible applications are optical switching/computing, photonic interconnection, high/low power laser sources, image processing, optical neural networks, etc. Driven by these high promises, there have been numerous reports on vertical cavity surface emitting laser diodes using InGaAs/GaAs/A1As, GaAs/AlGaAs structures. In this paper, we report characteristics of discrete InGaAs microlasers and monolithic two-dimensional arrays of microlasers. The advantages of optics for communications of data over distances longer than nearby gates have been argued previously. We proposed and demonstrated a photonic interconnect scheme using microlasers with planar optics which will be robust, accurate, and easily alignable

    A Polygenic Score for Type 2 Diabetes Risk is Associated with Both the Acute and Sustained Response to Sulfonylureas

    There is a limited understanding of how genetic loci associated with glycemic traits and type 2 diabetes (T2D) influence the response to antidiabetic medications. Polygenic scores provide increasing power to detect patterns of disease predisposition that might benefit from a targeted pharmacologic intervention. In the Study to Understand the Genetics of the Acute Response to Metformin and Glipizide in Humans (SUGAR-MGH), we constructed weighted polygenic scores using known genome-wide significant associations for T2D, fasting glucose, and fasting insulin, comprising 65, 43, and 13 single nucleotide polymorphisms, respectively. Multiple linear regression tested for associations between scores and glycemic traits as well as pharmacodynamic end points, adjusting for age, sex, race, and BMI. A higher T2D score was nominally associated with a shorter time to insulin peak, greater glucose area over the curve, shorter time to glucose trough, and steeper slope to glucose trough after glipizide. In replication, a higher T2D score was associated with a greater 1-year hemoglobin A(1c) reduction to sulfonylureas in the Genetics of Diabetes Audit and Research in Tayside Scotland (GoDARTS) study (P = 0.02). Our findings suggest that individuals with a higher genetic burden for T2D experience a greater acute and sustained response to sulfonylureas

    En el artículo se presentan los resultados parciales de una investigación sobre los cultos patronales católicos a las advocaciones marianas en el occidente venezolano, en dos ciudades del país: Maracaibo y Barquisimeto. Se describe, analiza e interpretan los cultos a: Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Chiquinquirá y La Divina Pastora; haciendoreferencia a las creencias precoloniales, a su origen colonial, y a su resemantización en el presente. Se aplica el análisis del discurso a los relatos, cantos y narrativas recogidas en la experiencia de campo y se relacionan con las representaciones que de la mujer se tienen en ambos lugares. Se concluye que entre los creyentes existe un desplazamientosemántico de la mujer o figura femenina a la Virgen-Madre

Besides the small optical mode volume, two physical mechanisms come into play simultaneously: a volume effect caused by the strain-induced refractive index perturbation (known as photo-elasticity), and a surface effect caused by the shift of the optical boundaries due to mechanical vibrations. As a result, proper material and structure engineering allows one to control each contribution individually. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the perfect cancellation of Brillouin scattering arising from Rayleigh acoustic waves by engineering a silica nanowire with exactly opposing photo-elastic and moving-boundary effects.     High frequency impedance based fault location in distribution system with DGs

    Distributed generations (DGs) in the distribution systems are connected into the buses using power electronic converters. During fault, it is challenging to provide a constant impedance model for DGs in the system frequency due to the variable converter control strategies. System frequency impedance measurement based fault locations can be influenced by the converters’ fault behaviour. This study addresses this problem by proposing a wide-area high-frequency impedance comparison based fault location technique. The high-frequency impedance model of DG is provided. Based on the constant DG impedance model in high-frequency range, the faulted line sections can be distinguished by comparing the measured impedance differences without requiring the exact distribution system parameters. Simulation results show that the proposed wide-area transient measurements based fault location method can provide accurate faulted sections in the distribution systems with DGs regardless of the load and DG output variations, measurement noise, unbalanced loads and islanding operations

    Insights Into the Feeding Behaviors and Biomechanics of \u3ci\u3eVarroa destructor\u3c/i\u3e Mites on Honey Bee Pupae Using Electropenetrography and Histology

    Feeding behaviors and biomechanics of female Varroa destructor mites are revealed from AC-DC electropenetrography (EPG) recordings of mites feeding from Apis mellifera honey bee pupae and histology of mite internal ingestion apparatus. EPG signals characteristic of arthropod suction feeding (ingestion) were identified for mites that fed on pupae during overnight recordings. Ingestion by these mites was confirmed afterwards by observing internally fluorescent microbeads previously injected into their hosts. Micrographs of internal ingestion apparatus illustrate the connection between a gnathosomal tube and a pharyngeal lumen, which is surrounded by alternating dilator and constrictor muscles. Inspection of EPG signals showed the muscularized mite pharyngeal pump operates at a mean repetition rate of 4.5 cycles/s to ingest host fluids. Separate feeding events observed for mites numbered between 23 and 33 over approximately 16 h of recording, with each event lasting ~10 s. Feeding events were each separated by ~2 min. Consecutive feeding events separated by either locomotion or prolonged periods of quiescence were grouped into feeding bouts, which ranged in number from one to six. Statistical analyses of EPG data revealed that feeding events were prolonged for mites having lower pharyngeal pump frequencies, and mites having prolonged feeding events went unfed for significantly more time between feeding events. These results suggest that mites may adjust behaviors to meet limitations of their feeding apparatus to acquire similar amounts of food. Data reported here help to provide a more robust view of Varroa mite feeding than those previously reported and are both reminiscent of, as well as distinct from, some other acarines and fluid-feeding insects
