    Drainage of the hepatic cyst by laparoscopy - clinical case

    Liver cysts are formations of serous content surrounded by normal liver parenchyma, without communication with the bile duct. The cyst wall is generally lined with cuboidal epithelium surrounded by layers of connective tissue. They are rare entities in adult patients, generally, they are asymptomatic in 3%, and between 10-15% of all patients will generate symptoms that lead them to consult. A 38-year-old man with an external abdominal tomography study that reported a giant hepatic cyst. Laboratory blood tests: hemoglobin 7.9 g/dl; leukocytosis 11,000/ul; serum electrolytes, liver transaminases, and bilirubin were normal, alkaline phosphatase, and gamma glutamyl-transpeptidase 94 U/l and 241 U/l, respectively. Non-reactive anti-human immuno-deficiency virus (HIV 1) and two antibodies, venereal disease research laboratory (VDRL), cancer antigen (CA) 19-9 antigen, hepatitis B-C surface antigen, and carcinoembryonic antigen were negative. He underwent surgery by laparoscopic drainage of the liver cyst, through a median infraumbilical incision with the Hasson technique and placement of three 12 mm trocars, hepatomegaly was observed without finding an exit site for purulent material, it was punctured through liver segment V, and 2000 ml of citrine fluid was extracted. The hepatic wound is addressed with a 1-0 caliber chromic catgut thread, placing a Penrose-type drain. At 48 hours postoperatively, it evolves favorably, so it is decided to discharge. Hepatic cysts are fluid-filled cavities lined by a single-layered cuboidal or columnar biliary epithelium in the liver.     [EN] Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (ToLCNDV) emerged in the Mediterranean Basin in 2012 as the first DNA bipartite begomovirus (Geminiviridae family), causing severe yield and economic losses in cucurbit crops. A major resistance locus was identified in the wild melon accession WM-7 (Cucumis melo kachri group), but the mechanisms involved in the resistant response remained unknown. In this work, we used RNA-sequencing to identify disease-associated genes that are differentially expressed in the course of ToLCNDV infection and could contribute to resistance. Transcriptomes of the resistant WM-7 genotype and the susceptible cultivar Piñonet Piel de Sapo (PS)(C. melo ibericus group) in ToLCNDV and mock inoculated plants were compared at four time points during infection (0, 3, 6, and 12 days post inoculation). Different gene expression patterns were observed over time in the resistant and susceptible genotypes in comparison to their respective controls. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in ToLCNDV-infected plants were classified using gene ontology (GO) terms, and genes of the categories transcription, DNA replication, and helicase activity were downregulated in WM-7 but upregulated in PS, suggesting that reduced activity of these functions reduces ToLCNDV replication and intercellular spread and thereby contributes to resistance. DEGs involved in the jasmonic acid signaling pathway, photosynthesis, RNA silencing, transmembrane, and sugar transporters entail adverse consequences for systemic infection in the resistant genotype, and lead to susceptibility in PS. The expression levels of selected candidate genes were validated by qRT-PCR to corroborate their differential expression upon ToLCNDV infection in resistant and susceptible melon. Furthermore, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) with an effect on structural functionality of DEGs linked to the main QTLs for ToLCNDV resistance have been identified.     Dynamic equivalence between atomic and colloidal liquids

    We show that the kinetic-theoretical self-diffusion coefficient of an atomic fluid plays the same role as the short-time self-diffusion coefficient D_S in a colloidal liquid, in the sense that the dynamic properties of the former, at times much longer than the mean free time, and properly scaled with D_S, will indistinguishable from those of a colloidal liquid with the same interaction potential. One important consequence of such dynamic equivalence is that the ratio D_L/ D_S of the long-time to the short-time self-diffusion coefficients must then be the same for both, an atomic and a colloidal system characterized by the same inter-particle interactions. This naturally extends to atomic fluids a well-known dynamic criterion for freezing of colloidal liquids[Phys. Rev. Lett. 70, 1557 (1993)]. We corroborate these predictions by comparing molecular and Brownian dynamics simulations on (soft- and hard-sphere) model systems, representative of what we may refer to as the "hard-sphere" dynamic universality class

    Contribución de las actividades prácticas en la evaluación de asignaturas pertenecientes a grados de ciencias experimentales

    Se presentan los resultados del proceso de evaluación de algunas asignaturas experimentales incluidas dentro de diferentes títulos, Grado en Biología, Grado en Ciencias del Mar, Grado en Químicas, Grado en Óptica y Optometría y Grado en Ingeniería Química, en las que el Departamento de Química Orgánica de la Universidad de Alicante está involucrado. Los resultados recogidos muestran como la evaluación continua y la realización de una prueba final influyen en la calificación final de la asignatura. Además, dentro de la evaluación continua se han diseñado diferentes actividades, considerando la realización de prácticas de laboratorio, la resolución de problemas y presentación de los mismos, así como la entrega de cuestionarios y ejercicios a través de plataformas virtuales. Se presenta el análisis de como cada una de estas actividades contribuye en el resultado final obtenido por los estudiantes, mostrando que las actividades de carácter práctico influyen en la calificación final de una manera más positiva

    En la presente memoria se detallan los resultados del análisis comparativo del proceso de evaluación continua, así como su influencia en la calificación final del alumno, en diferentes asignaturas de grado adscritas al área de conocimiento de Química Orgánica: Grado de Biología y Ciencias del Mar, asignatura Química, código 26510; Grado de Química, asignatura Determinación Estructural de Compuestos Orgánicos, código 26030; Grado en Óptica y Optometría, asignatura Química, código 24014 y Grado en Ingeniería Química, asignatura Química Orgánica Aplicada, código 34513. Dicho análisis comparativo es fruto de los resultados obtenidos por el alumno en las diversas metodologías y estrategias docentes aplicadas en el proceso de evaluación continua que, como se verá, repercuten de manera notable en la calificación final de las asignaturas. También se pretende evaluar el rendimiento y competencias conseguidas por el alumno, destacando ventajas e inconvenientes de la evaluación continua durante el desarrollo de la asignatura. Y como último fin de este estudio se debatirá sobre las estrategias que hayan resultado más efectivas para su posible implantación en sucesivos cursos académicos

    En la presente comunicación se detallarán los resultados obtenidos de la valoración del alumno sobre los créditos prácticos en diferentes asignaturas de grado (Grado en Biología, y Grado en Ciencias del Mar: 26510, Química; Grado en Química: 26030, Determinación Estructural de Compuestos Orgánicos y 26050, Química Farmacéutica; Grado en Ingeniería Química: 34513, Química Orgánica Aplicada) adscritas al área de conocimiento de Química Orgánica. Se presentarán y analizarán los resultados obtenidos de esta valoración por parte del alumnado de las diferentes actividades prácticas implantadas en dichas asignaturas y su repercusión en la comprensión y seguimiento de las mismas. También se pretende evaluar cuales son las estrategias más efectivas y cuales son susceptibles de cambios. Y como último fin de este estudio se debatirá sobre las posibles mejoras propuestas por el alumno para su posible implantación en sucesivos cursos académicos

    Nuclear envelope defects cause stem cell dysfunction in premature-aging mice

    Nuclear lamina alterations occur in physiological aging and in premature aging syndromes. Because aging is also associated with abnormal stem cell homeostasis, we hypothesize that nuclear envelope alterations could have an important impact on stem cell compartments. To evaluate this hypothesis, we examined the number and functional competence of stem cells in Zmpste24-null progeroid mice, which exhibit nuclear lamina defects. We show that Zmpste24 deficiency causes an alteration in the number and proliferative capacity of epidermal stem cells. These changes are associated with an aberrant nuclear architecture of bulge cells and an increase in apoptosis of their supporting cells in the hair bulb region. These alterations are rescued in Zmpste24−/−Lmna+/− mutant mice, which do not manifest progeroid symptoms. We also report that molecular signaling pathways implicated in the regulation of stem cell behavior, such as Wnt and microphthalmia transcription factor, are altered in Zmpste24−/− mice. These findings establish a link between age-related nuclear envelope defects and stem cell dysfunction

    Cruciate-Retaining vs Posterior-Stabilized Primary Total Arthroplasty. Clinical Outcome Comparison With a Minimum Follow-Up of 10 Years

    Background: Controversy continues regarding whether the posterior cruciate ligament should be retained or removed during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedure. The objective was to compare the clinical outcomes with a minimum follow-up of 10 years between patients who received contemporary cruciate-retaining or posterior-stabilized primary TKA. Methods: Case-control study of 268 patients who underwent cruciate-retaining TKA vs 211 to posterior-stabilized design, with the same arthroplasty system, and a minimum follow-up of 10 years. Clinical assessment was performed by Knee Society scores, Western Ontario and MacMasters Universities and Short-Form 12 questionnaires, range of motion, and patient satisfaction. Results: Successful outcomes were found for both designs. No significant differences in functional scores, range of motion, patient-related scores, or patient satisfaction. Between the 5-year and last postoperative follow-up, there were a significant decrease of all clinical scores in both groups. In addition, complication rate and implant survival were similar between groups. Conclusion: The superiority of one design over the other was not found. Both designs can be used expecting long-term successful outcomes and high survival. The choice of the design depended on the status of the posterior cruciate ligament and surgeon preference
