The present study on the socio-economic importance of the vegetable packing-sheets of the wetlands took place in three townships (AbomeyCalavi, Cotonou and Porto-Novo). It mainly aims at evaluating the potential of the area in vegetable species used as traditional packing by local people and their socio-economic importance for a better use of these species. Socioeconomic surveys were directed towards 270 sellers /users of the sheets like packing. The availability, the economic and ethnobotanic practical values of the species were given. Tests of comparison were carried out between different socio-demographic categories for the use of these species. Ten (10) species divided into ten (10) genres and families were listed. Thalia geniculata (85%), Lasimorpha senegalensis (45%), Tectona grandis (35%) and Musa sp (30%) are the most species used by the populations. The use of packing vegetable sheets depends on the educational level and the monthly income of respondents. These sheets make object of a flourishing trade paying of the substantial incomes (5000 to 8000FCFA/ day) to the sales women. This study could made up a data base for a better use of these species of biodegradable sheets for the environmental protection

Two-dimensional flow of foam around an obstacle: force measurements

A Stokes experiment for foams is proposed. It consists in a two-dimensional flow of a foam, confined between a water subphase and a top plate, around a fixed circular obstacle. We present systematic measurements of the drag exerted by the flowing foam on the obstacle, \emph{versus} various separately controlled parameters: flow rate, bubble volume, bulk viscosity, obstacle size, shape and boundary conditions. We separate the drag into two contributions, an elastic one (yield drag) at vanishing flow rate, and a fluid one (viscous coefficient) increasing with flow rate. We quantify the influence of each control parameter on the drag. The results exhibit in particular a power-law dependence of the drag as a function of the bulk viscosity and the flow rate with two different exponents. Moreover, we show that the drag decreases with bubble size, and increases proportionally to the obstacle size. We quantify the effect of shape through a dimensioned drag coefficient, and we show that the effect of boundary conditions is small.Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures, resubmitted version to Phys. Rev.

I\u27ll Just Weight on the Lord: Spirituality and Health Behaviors in Obese African American Women

Obesity is one of the fastest growing health concerns impacting all racial, ethnic, gender, and socioeconomic groups in the United States of America. More than one-third of the U.S. adult population is classified as being obese (Obesity Society, 2021). Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in all races and genders within the US with African American women comprising a majority of those impacted by this chronic health condition. Obesity rates are well documented within the literature but what is lacking is the role spirituality may play in obese African American women and their health behaviors. The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to explore and describe the lived experiences of obese African American women with attention and focus on weight, health behaviors, and spirituality. This study consisted of participant recruitment from various social organizations, beauty salons, and faith-based organizations. A naturalistic setting with a descriptive approach was taken to interview the participants and all recorded interviews were transcribed and utilized for data analysis. The analysis method for this study was the qualitative content analysis process. Upon completion of data analysis, the identification of three themes, who I am, the weight I bear, and power struggles, assisted with recognizing the gaps and concerns that supported the researcher in painting a picture of the lived experiences of obese African American women. Recommendations included diversifying healthcare providers, implementing community based interventions and research, and completing knowledge assessments before education

The 125th anniversary of the first postulation of the soil origin of endophytic bacteria – a tribute to M.L.V. Galippe

In both managed and natural ecosystems, a wide range of various non-nodulating bacteria can thrive as endophytes in the plant interior, and some can be beneficial to their hosts (Hallmann and Berg 2007; Reinhold-Hurek and Hurek 2011). Colonizationmechanisms, the ecology and functioning of these endophytic bacteria as well as their interactions with plants have been investigated (Hardoim et al. 2008; Compant et al. 2010). Although the source of colonization can also be the spermosphere, anthosphere, caulosphere, and the phyllosphere, most endophytic bacteria are derived from the soil environment (Hallmann and Berg 2007; Compant et al. 2010)
