    Weight stigma in frequent exercisers: Overt, demeaning and condescending.

    The aim of this study was to qualitatively examine weight stigma in individuals who exercise frequently. In total, six focus groups, comprising 30 participants aged 18-25 years, were conducted using convenience sampling. All participants were frequent exercisers. Five themes emerged in the data with participants discussing bullying, the consequences of obesity, causes of obesity, lack of willpower and interventions to reduce obesity. This study is the first qualitative examination of weight stigmatisation in frequent exercisers, where the beliefs reported by focus group participants suggest that frequent exercisers stigmatise, discriminate and dehumanise obese people. Future research to examine the impact of weight stigma on exercise motivation and behaviour of obese people appears warranted

    Remarkably robust and correlated coherence and antiferromagnetism in (Ce1−x_{1-x}Lax_x)Cu2_2Ge2_2

    We present magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, specific heat, and thermoelectric power measurements on (Ce1−x_{1-x}Lax_x)Cu2_2Ge2_2 single crystals (0 ≀x≀\leq x\leq 1). With La substitution, the antiferromagnetic temperature TNT_N is suppressed in an almost linear fashion and moves below 0.36 K, the base temperature of our measurements for x>x> 0.8. Surprisingly, in addition to robust antiferromagnetism, the system also shows low temperature coherent scattering below TcohT_{coh} up to ∌\sim 0.9 of La, indicating a small percolation limit ∌\sim 9%\% of Ce that separates a coherent regime from a single-ion Kondo impurity regime. TcohT_{coh} as a function of magnetic field was found to have different behavior for xx 0.9. Remarkably, (Tcoh)2(T_{coh})^2 at HH = 0 was found to be linearly proportional to TNT_N. The jump in the magnetic specific heat ÎŽCm\delta C_{m} at TNT_N as a function of TK/TNT_K/T_N for (Ce1−x_{1-x}Lax_x)Cu2_2Ge2_2 follows the theoretical prediction based on the molecular field calculation for the SS = 1/2 resonant level model

    Basal-Plane Nonlinear Susceptibility: A Direct Probe of the Single-Ion Physics in URu2Si2

    The microscopic nature of the hidden order state in URu2Si2 is dependent on the low-energy configurations of the uranium ions, and there is currently no consensus on whether it is predominantly 5f^2 or 5f^3. Here we show that measurement of the basal-plane nonlinear susceptibility can resolve this issue; its sign at low-temperatures is a distinguishing factor. We calculate the linear and nonlinear susceptibilities for specific 5f^2 and 5f^3 crystal-field schemes that are consistent with current experiment. Because of its dual magnetic and orbital character, a \Gamma_5 magnetic non-Kramers doublet ground-state of the U ion can be identified by χ1c(T)∝χ3⊄(T)\chi_1^c(T) \propto \chi_3^\perp(T) where we have determined the constant of proportionality for URu2Si2.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

    Analysis of magnetization and a spin state crossover in the multiferroic Ca3_3Co2−x_{2-x}Mnx_xO6_6

    Ca_3Co_{2-x}Mn_xO_6 (x ~ 0.96) is a multiferroic with spin-chains of alternating Co(2+) and Mn(4+) ions. The spin state of Co(2+) remains unresolved, due to a discrepancy between high temperature X-ray absorption (S=3/2) and low temperature neutron (S=1/2) measurements. Using a combination of magnetic modeling and crystal-field analysis, we show that the existing low temperature data cannot be reconciled within a high spin scenario by invoking spin-orbit or Jahn-Teller distortions. To unify the experimental results, we propose a spin-state crossover with specific experimental predictions.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Muon Simulations for Super-Kamiokande, KamLAND and CHOOZ

    Muon backgrounds at Super-Kamiokande, KamLAND and CHOOZ are calculated using MUSIC. A modified version of the Gaisser sea level muon distribution and a well-tested Monte Carlo integration method are introduced. Average muon energy, flux and rate are tabulated.     Gauge Theories with Cayley-Klein SO(2;j)SO(2;j) and SO(3;j)SO(3;j) Gauge Groups

    Gauge theories with the orthogonal Cayley-Klein gauge groups SO(2;j)SO(2;j) and SO(3;j)SO(3;{\bf j}) are regarded. For nilpotent values of the contraction parameters j{\bf j} these groups are isomorphic to the non-semisimple Euclid, Newton, Galilei groups and corresponding matter spaces are fiber spaces with degenerate metrics. It is shown that the contracted gauge field theories describe the same set of fields and particle mass as SO(2),SO(3)SO(2), SO(3) gauge theories, if Lagrangians in the base and in the fibers all are taken into account. Such theories based on non-semisimple contracted group provide more simple field interactions as compared with the initial ones.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure
