Kinetics of viral self-assembly: the role of ss RNA antenna

A big class of viruses self-assemble from a large number of identical capsid proteins with long flexible N-terminal tails and ss RNA. We study the role of the strong Coulomb interaction of positive N-terminal tails with ss RNA in the kinetics of the in vitro virus self-assembly. Capsid proteins stick to unassembled chain of ss RNA (which we call "antenna") and slide on it towards the assembly site. We show that at excess of capsid proteins such one-dimensional diffusion accelerates self-assembly more than ten times. On the other hand at excess of ss RNA, antenna slows self-assembly down. Several experiments are proposed to verify the role of ss RNA antenna.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, several experiments are proposed, a new idea of experiment is adde

Quantum mechanics and geodesic deviation in the brane world

We investigate the induced geodesic deviation equations in the brane world models, in which all the matter forces except gravity are confined on the 3-brane. Also, the Newtonian limit of induced geodesic deviation equation is studied. We show that in the first Randall-Sundrum model the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rule is as a result of consistency between the geodesic and geodesic deviation equations. This indicates that the path of test particle is made up of integral multiples of a fundamental Compton-type unit of length h/mch/mc.Comment: 5 pages, no figure

Influence of Corn Hybrid and Processing Method on Ruminal and Intestinal Digestion

    Get PDF
Using the mobile bag technique, five commercially available corn hybrids harvested as either dry-rolled or high-moisture corn were evaluated for site and extent of DM and starch digestion. Total-tract DM digestibility was improved 7 to 16 percentage units, and total-tract starch digestibility was improved 9 to 18 percentage units among hybrids when processed as high-moisture corn compared to dry-rolled corn. The results of this trial suggest that hybrid and processing method interact and can influence DM and starch digestibility

    Synthesis of Triple-Stranded Diruthenium(II) Compounds

A series of ligands containing a 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazole unit have been used for the formation of triple-stranded dinuclear Ru(II) complexes. In contrast to the previously reported complexes of labile metals, the use of inert Ru(II) enabled stereoisomeric mixtures of triple-stranded diruthenium(II) complexes to be accessed. The chromatographic resolution of the enantiomers of a reported helicate containing a more rigid 1,4-xylyl spacer was carried out on cellulose. The ligand spacer was modified and as the flexibility increased the production of isomeric mixtures was detected; the mesocate and helicate forms were separated when an n-propyl spacer was used. This pair of diastereomers was found to exhibit photoconversion, a unique observation for Ru(II) compounds of this type. Partial separation via chromatographic resolution was achieved for compounds containing an n-butyl spacer, and the presence of a mesocate/helicate pair confirmed

Detection of somatic changes in human cancer DNA by DNA fingerprint analysis.

Minisatellite DNA probes which can detect a large number of autosomal loci dispersed throughout the human genome were used to examine the constitutional and tumour DNA of 35 patients with a variety of cancers of which eight were of gastrointestinal origin. Somatic changes were seen in the tumour DNA in ten of the 35 cases. The changes included alterations in the relative intensities of hybridising DNA fragments, and, in three cases of cancers of gastrointestinal origin, the appearance of novel minisatellite fragments not seen in the corresponding constitutional DNA. The results of this preliminary study suggests that DNA fingerprint analysis provides a useful technique for identifying somatic changes in cancers
