On the computation of high-dimensional potentials of advection-diffusion operators
We study a fast method for computing potentials of advection-diffusion operators
with and over rectangular boxes in R^n. By combining high-order cubature formulas with modern methods of structured tensor product approximations we derive an approximation of the potentials which is accurate and provides approximation formulas of high-order. The cubature formulas have been obtained by using the basis functions introduced in the theory of approximate approximations. The action of volume potentials on the basis functions allows one-dimensional integral representations with separable integrands i.e. a product of functions depending only on one of the variables. Then a separated representation of the density, combined with a suitable quadrature rule, leads to a tensor product representation of the integral operator. Since only one-dimensional operations are used, the resulting method is effective also in high-dimensional case
FAIRE-seq data analysis of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii under carbon deprivation
For the genome-wide identification of nucleosome depleted regions under carbon deprivation, we analyze an available set of data from an assay of formaldehyde-assisted isolation of regulatory elements followed by sequencing (FAIRE-seq). Mapping to the sequenced nuclear genome of C.reinhardtii, followed by the identification of the enrichment-sequenced fragments was performed. We examined the location of these fragments relative to annotated genes. The related genes were associated to the corresponding Gene-Ontology (GO), for an evaluation of over-representate GO categories. Some genes, link with functions or locations, that have been previous described, indicating the success of the method finding carbon-metabolism related fragments
Terracotta Pipes with Triangular Engravings
The discovery of two smoking pipes from seventeenth-century contexts in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is used to suggest the presence in colonial times of a new set of stylistic norms derived from African traditions that are expressed at a regional scale not only in smoking pipes, but in a variety of items of material culture. These terracotta pipes, recovered at Bolívar 373 and the Liniers House sites, are characterized by their particular geometric decorative pattern, achieved by engravings and incisions. Similar specimens were found elsewhere in Buenos Aires, as well as in Cayastá (province of Santa Fe, Argentina) and Brazil

Inherent Dangers in Orogenital Sex During Pregnancy
Coitus and cunnilingus during pregnancy are generally safe; whereas orogenital sex involving vaginal air insufflations can be very dangerous, causing even the death of the women. We carried out a search of case reports and reviews concerning air embolism during pregnancy due to orogenital sex. Physicians consultations must cover all the rules of safe sexual behavior, including avoidance of vaginal air insufflations in the third trimester. Keywords: Air embolism, cunnilingus, orogenital sex, pregnanc
Achieving enhanced peroxidase-like activity in multimetallic nanorattles
Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) have been extensively used as artificial enzymes, but their performance is still limited. We address this challenge by focusing on multimetallic nanorattles comprising an Au core inside a bimetallic AgAu shell, separated by a void (Au@AgAu NRs). They were prepared by a galvanic replacement approach and contained an ultrathin and porous shell comprising an AgAu alloy. By investigating the peroxide-like activity using TMB oxidation as a model transformation, we have found an increase of 152 fold in activities for the NRs relative to conventional Au NPs. Based on the kinetics results, the NRs also showed the lowest K-m, indicating better interaction with the substrate and faster product formation. We also observed a linear relationship between the concentration of the product and oxTMB as a function of H2O2 concentration, which could be further applied for H2O2 sensing applications (colorimetric detection). These data suggest that the NRs enable the combined effect of an increased surface area relative to solid counterparts, the possibility of exposing highly active surface sites, and the exploitation of nanoconfinement effects due to the void regions between the core and shell components. These results provide important insights into the optimization of peroxidase-like performances beyond what can be achieved in conventional NPs and may inspire the development of better-performing artificial enzymes.Peer reviewe
Large-scale analysis of the SDSS-III DR8 photometric luminous galaxies angular correlation function
We analyse the large-scale angular correlation function (ACF) of the CMASS
luminous galaxies (LGs), a photometric-redshift catalogue based on the Data
Release 8 (DR8) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-III. This catalogue contains
over LGs in the range , which was split
into four redshift shells of constant width. First, we estimate the constraints
on the redshift-space distortion (RSD) parameters and ,
where is the galaxy bias, the growth rate and is the
normalization of the perturbations, finding that they vary appreciably among
different redshift shells, in agreement with previous results using DR7 data.
When assuming constant RSD parameters over the survey redshift range, we obtain
, which agrees at the level with Baryon
Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey DR9 spectroscopic results. Next, we performed
two cosmological analyses, where relevant parameters not fitted were kept fixed
at their fiducial values. In the first analysis, we extracted the baryon
acoustic oscillation peak position for the four redshift shells, and combined
with the sound horizon scale from 7-year \textit{Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy
Probe} to produce the constraints and
. In the second analysis, we used the ACF full shape
information to constrain cosmology using real data for the first time, finding
and .
These results are in good agreement with findings, showing that the ACF
can be efficiently applied to constrain cosmology in future photometric galaxy
surveys.Comment: MNRAS accepted. Minor corrections to match publish versio
