Construction and testing of the optical bench for LISA pathfinder
eLISA is a space mission designed to measure gravitational radiation over a frequency range of 0.1–100 mHz (European Space Agency LISA Assessment Study Report 2011). It uses laser interferometry to measure changes of order in the separation of inertial test masses housed in spacecraft separated by 1 million km. LISA Pathfinder (LPF) is a technology demonstrator mission that will test the key eLISA technologies of inertial test masses monitored by laser interferometry in a drag-free spacecraft. The optical bench that provides the interferometry for LPF must meet a number of stringent requirements: the optical path must be stable at the few level; it must direct the optical beams onto the inertial masses with an accuracy of better than ±25 μm, and it must be robust enough not only to survive launch vibrations but to achieve full performance after launch. In this paper we describe the construction and testing of the flight optical bench for LISA Pathfinder that meets all the design requirements
Co-Administration of Iron and a Bioavailable Curcumin Supplement Increases Serum BDNF Levels in Healthy Adults
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is key for the maintenance of normal neuronal function and energy homeostasis and has been suggested to improve cognitive function, including learning and memory. Iron and the antioxidant curcumin have been shown to influence BDNF homeostasis. This 6-week, double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study examined the effects of oral iron supplementation at low (18 mg) and high (65 mg) ferrous (FS) iron dosages, compared to a combination of these iron doses with a bioavailable formulated form of curcumin (HydroCurcTM; 500 mg) on BDNF levels in a healthy adult cohort of 155 male (26.42 years ± 0.55) and female (25.82 years ± 0.54) participants. Participants were randomly allocated to five different treatment groups: both iron and curcumin placebo (FS0+Plac), low dose iron and curcumin placebo (FS18+Plac), low dose iron and curcumin (FS18+Curc), high dose iron and curcumin placebo (FS65+Plac) and high dose iron and curcumin (FS65+Curc). Results showed a significant increase in BDNF over time (26%) in the FS18+Curc group (p = 0.024), and at end-point between FS18+Curc and FS18+Plac groups (35%, p = 0.042), demonstrating for the first time that the combination with curcumin, rather than iron supplementation alone, results in increased serum BDNF. The addition of curcumin to iron supplementation may therefore provide a novel approach to further enhance the benefits associated with increased BDNF levels
Construction of an optical test-bed for eLISA
In the planned eLISA mission a key part of the system is the optical bench that holds the interferometers for reading out the inter-spacecraft distance and the test mass position. We report on ongoing technology development for the eLISA optical system like the back-link between the optical benches and the science interferometer where the local beam is interfered with the received beam from the distant spacecraft. The focus will be on a setup to investigate the tilt-to-pathlength coupling in the science interferometer. To test the science interferometer in the lab a second bench providing a laser beam and a reference interferometer is needed. We present a setup with two ultra-stable low expansion glass benches and bonded optics. To suppress the tilt-to-pathlength coupling to the required level (few ÎĽm/rad) imaging optics are placed in front of the interferometer photo diodes
Investigating mechanisms of social support effectiveness: The case of locomotion motivation
Although social support can entail costs, individuals with a higher locomotion orientation, who are motivated to move and take action, benefit from support. In two dyadic studies, we tested whether perceived movement towards important goals would mediate the effect of recipients’ locomotion motivation on positive outcomes in support contexts. In Study 1, couples completed a 10-day diary and then recalled support interactions with their partner after the diary period. In Study 2, couples engaged in laboratory support interactions for important goals. Perceived goal movement mediated the effect of higher (vs. lower) locomotion on self-reported ratings and coder ratings of support outcomes. Higher locomotion recipients may benefit in support contexts because they perceive they can move smoothly towards their goals
Longmeyer Exposes or Creates Uncertainty about the Duty to Inform Remainder Beneficiaries of a Revocable Trust
This article discusses the surprising Longmeyer decision, handed down by the Supreme Court of Kentucky earlier this year in which a predecessor trustee was held to have a duty to give certain notifications to former remainder beneficiaries of a revocable trust. The authors then examine how Longmeyer might have been decided in other states and under other statutory schemes. The article concludes with observations concerning when certain notices to trust beneficiaries may be conducive to effective trust administration and suggestions to those who administer trusts on how best to comply with beneficiary notice requirements
The influence of laser relative intensity noise in the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna
LISA is an upcoming ESA mission that will detect gravitational waves in spaceby interferometrically measuring the separation between free-falling testmasses at picometer precision. To reach the desired performance, LISA willemploy the noise reduction technique time-delay interferometry (TDI), in whichmultiple raw interferometric readouts are time shifted and combined into thefinal scientific observables. Evaluating the performance in terms of these TDIvariables requires careful tracking of how different noise sources propagatethrough TDI, as noise correlations might affect the performance in unexpectedways. One example of such potentially correlated noise is the relativeintensity noise (RIN) of the six lasers aboard the three LISA satellites, whichwill couple into the interferometric phase measurements. In this article, wecalculate the expected RIN levels based on the current mission architecture andthe envisaged mitigation strategies. We find that strict requirements on thetechnical design reduce the effect from approximately 8.7 pm/rtHz perinter-spacecraft interferometer to that of a much lower sub-1 pm/rtHz noise,with typical characteristics of an uncorrelated readout noise after TDI. Ourinvestigations underline the importance of sufficient balanced detection of theinterferometric measurements.<br
The E-ELT Multi-Object Spectrograph: latest news from MOSAIC
There are 8000 galaxies, including 1600 at z larger than 1.6, which could be
simultaneously observed in an E-ELT field of view of 40 sq. arcmin. A
considerable fraction of astrophysical discoveries require large statistical
samples, which can only be obtained with multi-object spectrographs (MOS).
MOSAIC will provide a vast discovery space, enabled by a multiplex of 200 and
spectral resolving powers of R=5000 and 20000. MOSAIC will also offer the
unique capability of more than 10 "high-definition" (multi-object adaptive
optics, MOAO) integral-field units, optimised to investigate the physics of the
sources of reionization. The combination of these modes will make MOSAIC the
world-leading MOS facility, contributing to all fields of contemporary
astronomy, from extra-solar planets, to the study of the halo of the Milky Way
and its satellites, and from resolved stellar populations in nearby galaxies
out to observations of the earliest "first-light" structures in the Universe.
It will also study the distribution of the dark and ordinary matter at all
scales and epochs of the Universe. Recent studies of critical technical issues
such as sky-background subtraction and MOAO have demonstrated that such a MOS
is feasible with state-of-the-art technology and techniques. Current studies of
the MOSAIC team include further trade-offs on the wavelength coverage, a
solution for compensating for the non-telecentric new design of the telescope,
and tests of the saturation of skylines especially in the near-IR bands. In the
2020s the E-ELT will become the world's largest optical/IR telescope, and we
argue that it has to be equipped as soon as possible with a MOS to provide the
most efficient, and likely the best way to follow-up on James Webb Space

Framing the private land conservation conversation: Strategic framing of the benefits of conservation participation could increase landholder engagement
How conservation messages are framed will likely impact on the success of our efforts to engage people in conservation action. This is highly relevant in the private land conservation (PLC) sector given the low participation rates of landholders. Using a case study of PLC schemes targeted at Australian landholders, we present the first systematic analysis of communication strategies used by organisations and government departments delivering those schemes to engage the public. We develop a novel approach for analysing the framing of conservation messages that codes the stated benefits of schemes according to value orientation. We categorised the benefits as flowing to either the landholder, to society, or to the environment, corresponding to the egoistic, altruistic and biospheric value orientations that have been shown to influence human behaviour. We find that messages are biased towards environmental benefits. Surprisingly, this is the case even for market-based schemes that have the explicit objective of appealing to production-focussed landholders and those who are not already involved in conservation. The risk is that PLC schemes framed in this way will fail to engage more egoistically oriented landholders and are only likely to appeal to those most likely to already be conservation-minded. By understanding the frame in which PLC benefits are communicated, we can begin to understand the types of people who may be engaged by these messages, and who may not be. Results suggest that the framing of the communications for many schemes could be broadened to appeal to a more diverse group (and thus ultimately to a larger group) of landholders
Processes controlling carbon cycling in Antarctic glacier surface ecosystems
Glacier surface ecosystems, including cryoconite holes and cryolakes, are significant contributors to regional carbon cycles. Incubation experiments to determine the net production (NEP) of organic matter in cryoconite typically have durations of 6-24 hours, and produce a wide range of results, many of which indicate that the system is net heterotrophic. We employ longer term incubations to examine the temporal variation of NEP in cryoconite from the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica to examine the effect of sediment disturbance on system production, and to understand processes controlling production over the lifetimes of glacier surface ecosystems. The shorter-term incubations have durations of one week and show net heterotrophy. The longer term incubations of approximately one year show net autotrophy, but only after a period of about 40 days (~1000 hours). The control on net organic carbon production is a combination of the rate of diffusion of dissolved inorganic carbon from heterotrophic activity within cryoconite into the water, the rate of carbonate dissolution, and the saturation of carbonate in the water (which is a result of photosynthesis in a closed system). We demonstrate that sediment on glacier surfaces has the potential to accumulate carbon over timescales of months to years
