How U.S. Ocean Policy and Market Power Can Reform the Coral Reef Wildlife Trade
As the worldâs largest importer of marine ornamental species for the aquaria, curio, home dĂ©cor, and jewelry industries, the United States has an opportunity to leverage its considerable market power to promote more sustainable trade and reduce the effects of ornamental trade stress on coral reefs worldwide. Evidence indicates that collection of some coral reef animals for these trades has caused virtual elimination of local populations, major changes in age structure, and promotion of collection practices that destroy reef habitats. Management and enforcement of collection activities in major source countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines remain weak. Strengthening US trade laws and enforcement capabilities combined with increasing consumer and industry demand for responsible conservation can create strong incentives for improving management in source countries. This is particularly important in light of the March 2010 failure of the parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) to take action on key groups of corals
Imaging Cool Giant Planets in Reflected Light: Science Investigations and Synergy with Habitable Planets
Planned astronomical observatories of the 2020s will be capable of obtaining
reflected light photometry and spectroscopy of cool extrasolar giant planets.
Here we explain that such data are valuable both for understanding the origin
and evolution of giant planets as a whole and for preparing for the
interpretation of similar datasets from potentially habitable extrasolar

An Improved Canine Genome and a Comprehensive Catalogue of Coding Genes and Non-Coding Transcripts
The domestic dog, Canis familiaris, is a well-established model system for mapping trait and disease loci. While the original draft sequence was of good quality, gaps were abundant particularly in promoter regions of the genome, negatively impacting the annotation and study of candidate genes. Here, we present an improved genome build, canFam3.1, which includes 85 MB of novel sequence and now covers 99.8% of the euchromatic portion of the genome. We also present multiple RNA-Sequencing data sets from 10 different canine tissues to catalog âŒ175,000 expressed loci. While about 90% of the coding genes previously annotated by EnsEMBL have measurable expression in at least one sample, the number of transcript isoforms detected by our data expands the EnsEMBL annotations by a factor of four. Syntenic comparison with the human genome revealed an additional âŒ3,000 loci that are characterized as protein coding in human and were also expressed in the dog, suggesting that those were previously not annotated in the EnsEMBL canine gene set. In addition to âŒ20,700 high-confidence protein coding loci, we found âŒ4,600 antisense transcripts overlapping exons of protein coding genes, âŒ7,200 intergenic multi-exon transcripts without coding potential, likely candidates for long intergenic non-coding RNAs (lincRNAs) and âŒ11,000 transcripts were reported by two different library construction methods but did not fit any of the above categories. Of the lincRNAs, about 6,000 have no annotated orthologs in human or mouse. Functional analysis of two novel transcripts with shRNA in a mouse kidney cell line altered cell morphology and motility. All in all, we provide a much-improved annotation of the canine genome and suggest regulatory functions for several of the novel non-coding transcripts
GPI spectra of HR 8799 c, d, and e from 1.5 to 2.4m with KLIP Forward Modeling
We explore KLIP forward modeling spectral extraction on Gemini Planet Imager
coronagraphic data of HR 8799, using PyKLIP and show algorithm stability with
varying KLIP parameters. We report new and re-reduced spectrophotometry of HR
8799 c, d, and e in H & K bands. We discuss a strategy for choosing optimal
KLIP PSF subtraction parameters by injecting simulated sources and recovering
them over a range of parameters. The K1/K2 spectra for HR 8799 c and d are
similar to previously published results from the same dataset. We also present
a K band spectrum of HR 8799 e for the first time and show that our H-band
spectra agree well with previously published spectra from the VLT/SPHERE
instrument. We show that HR 8799 c and d show significant differences in their
H & K spectra, but do not find any conclusive differences between d and e or c
and e, likely due to large error bars in the recovered spectrum of e. Compared
to M, L, and T-type field brown dwarfs, all three planets are most consistent
with mid and late L spectral types. All objects are consistent with low gravity
but a lack of standard spectra for low gravity limit the ability to fit the
best spectral type. We discuss how dedicated modeling efforts can better fit HR
8799 planets' near-IR flux and discuss how differences between the properties

Performance of the Gemini Planet Imager Non-Redundant Mask and spectroscopy of two close-separation binaries HR 2690 and HD 142527
The Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) contains a 10-hole non-redundant mask (NRM),
enabling interferometric resolution in complement to its coronagraphic
capabilities. The NRM operates both in spectroscopic (integral field
spectrograph, henceforth IFS) and polarimetric configurations. NRM observations
were taken between 2013 and 2016 to characterize its performance. Most
observations were taken in spectroscopic mode with the goal of obtaining
precise astrometry and spectroscopy of faint companions to bright stars. We
find a clear correlation between residual wavefront error measured by the AO
system and the contrast sensitivity by comparing phase errors in observations
of the same source, taken on different dates. We find a typical 5-
contrast sensitivity of at . We explore the
accuracy of spectral extraction of secondary components of binary systems by
recovering the signal from a simulated source injected into several datasets.
We outline data reduction procedures unique to GPI's IFS and describe a newly
public data pipeline used for the presented analyses. We demonstrate recovery
of astrometry and spectroscopy of two known companions to HR 2690 and HD
142527. NRM+polarimetry observations achieve differential visibility precision
of in the best case. We discuss its limitations on
Gemini-S/GPI for resolving inner regions of protoplanetary disks and prospects
for future upgrades. We summarize lessons learned in observing with NRM in

A high-resolution map of human evolutionary constraint using 29 mammals.
The comparison of related genomes has emerged as a powerful lens for genome interpretation. Here we report the sequencing and comparative analysis of 29 eutherian genomes. We confirm that at least 5.5% of the human genome has undergone purifying selection, and locate constrained elements covering âŒ4.2% of the genome. We use evolutionary signatures and comparisons with experimental data sets to suggest candidate functions for âŒ60% of constrained bases. These elements reveal a small number of new coding exons, candidate stop codon readthrough events and over 10,000 regions of overlapping synonymous constraint within protein-coding exons. We find 220 candidate RNA structural families, and nearly a million elements overlapping potential promoter, enhancer and insulator regions. We report specific amino acid residues that have undergone positive selection, 280,000 non-coding elements exapted from mobile elements and more than 1,000 primate- and human-accelerated elements. Overlap with disease-associated variants indicates that our findings will be relevant for studies of human biology, health and disease
