    Carcass and meat quality of different pig genotypes in an organic extensive outdoor fatting system

    Carcass, meat, and fat quality were evaluated of 37 castrates of 4 different genotypes [Pi*Du*GLR (10), Pi*AS (7), Du (10), Du*GLR (10)] kept on grass clover and fed with coarse meal made up of farm grown cereal and grain legumes without optimising the amount of amino acids and their relation to the energy content. Due to the energy surplus in the diet and in relation to the diminishing muscularity of the genotypes (corresponding to the above-mentioned sequence) lean meat contents were on a low level whereas intramuscular fat contents increased distinctly. Sensory meat quality was only at a medium level and did not differ noticeably between the genotypes. It is concluded that adipose carcasses associated with increased intramuscular fat contents do not lead automatically to higher sensory meat qualities. Therefore the system boundaries of organic pig fattening cannot be used without further efforts supplying market niches for pork of high eating quality

    Protestantism and Government Spending: a Negative Relationship? An Empirical Application to Swiss Cantons

    Recent empirical growth literature suggests that cultural factors play a decisive role in economic development, while empirical evidence for their impact on government activity remains scant. In this paper, we conjecture based on Weber’s Protestant Ethics that ‚Protestant values’ such as self-reliance and austerity should affect both the size and scope of governments. More specifically, we hypothesize that smaller government budgets should be observable in more Protestant jurisdictions. Using a panel of sub-federal expenditure in 26 Swiss cantons from 1980 to 1998 we find supporting evidence, observing that the share of Protestants in the cantonal residential population exerts a spending dampening impact. Our results suggest that cultural factors should not be omitted from future public finance analyses.Protestantism; Culture; Government Spending; Public Finance

    An optical linewidth study of a chromoprotein-C-phycocyanin in a low-temperature glass

    The temperature dependence of spectral holes burnt into a phycocyanin-doped ethylene glycol/water glass is investigated in the temperature range between 1.5 and 15 K. The data are well described by a power law with an exponent of 1.16 ± 0.1. Chromoproteins thus behave very much the same as glasses doped with small impurity molecules

This finding is rationalized in terms of the special level structure in this pigment, the fast energy-transfer processes and a lack of correlation of the energies of the emissive states

    The Multidimensional Scale of Irrational Beliefs (MSIB) is a brief and theoretically founded measure of irrational thinking as conceptualized by Albert Ellis in his most recent works on Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (e.g., Ellis, 2003). With a total of 18 items, it captures demandingness, negative self-evaluation, and low frustration tolerance as the three core aspects of irrationality. Unlike previous irrationality instruments, it is a highly reliable, purely cognitive measure and avoids measuring aspects which are consequences or correlates of irrational thinking (e.g., emotions). Three studies (N = 757) are reported that repeatedly indicate high internal consistency of all subscales (Cronbach’s alpha: .85-.90), factorial validity, and convergent validity with earlier measures

    Intra- and intercellular fluctuations in Min-protein dynamics decrease with cell length

    Self-organization of proteins in space and time is of crucial importance for the functioning of cellular processes. Often, this organization takes place in the presence of strong random fluctuations due to the small number of molecules involved. We report on stochastic switching of the Min-protein distributions between the two cell halves in short Escherichia coli cells. A computational model provides strong evidence that the macroscopic switching is rooted in microscopic noise on the molecular scale. In longer bacteria, the switching turns into regular oscillations that are required for positioning of the division plane. As the pattern becomes more regular, cell-to-cell variability also lessens, indicating cell length-dependent regulation of Min-protein activity.Comment: Article and Supplementary Information: 26 pages, 12 figure

    The flow field off the southwest coast of India at 8N was investigated during RV Sonne cruise 89 in August 1993 by direct velocity observations from shipboard- and lowered-ADCP and geostrophic computations from CTD stations. The upper ocean between 75E and 76°52â€ČE near the South Indian shelf was governed by a northward flow with a subsurface velocity maximum of 25 cm s−1 at about 100 m depth. This flow, organized as a poleward undercurrent hugging the continental slope, is typical for the southwest monsoon season. The northward transport in August 1993 was 4.7 Sv (1 Sverdrup = 106 m3 s−1) for the upper 300 m from the shipboard ADCP. Earlier geostrophic observations showed southward surface flow above the poleward undercurrent, but in August 1993 the northward flow reached to the surface and in the geostrophy calculations, i.e. without the southward Ekman flow near the surface, there was even no clear subsurface core. The T-S characteristics show that Bay of Bengal Water (BBW) was carried with this flow, and low wind conditions seemed to be connected to the flow of BBW from the southern tip of Sri Lanka toward the southwest coast of India. Further offshore, two meridional current bands were identified in the upper 300 m of the ocean. West of the coastal undercurrent a band of southward flow existed with velocities up to 35 cm s−1 above and to the east of the Chagos-Laccadive Ridge, from 72°10â€ČE to 75E. The associated geostrophic transport in the upper 500 m was 5.2 Sv. As the T-S relation was different from that of the northward flow, this current band was not a local recirculation of the poleward undercurrent. Further west, the flow was weak, but intensified toward the central Arabian Sea, between 66E and 69°20â€ČE, where another southward current band was found with velocities of up to 20 cm s−1 and a total geostrophic transport for the upper 300 m of −7.2 Sv
