    We present Gbu, a terminating variant of the sequent calculus G3i for intuitionistic propositional logic. Gbu modifies G3i by annotating the sequents so to distinguish rule applications into two phases: an unblocked phase where any rule can be backward applied, and a blocked phase where only right rules can be used. Derivations of Gbu have a trivial translation into G3i. Rules for right implication exploit an evaluation relation, defined on sequents; this is the key tool to avoid the generation of branches of infinite length in proof-search. To prove the completeness of Gbu, we introduce a refutation calculus Rbu for unprovability dual to Gbu. We provide a proof-search procedure that, given a sequent as input, returns either a Rbu-derivation or a Gbu-derivation of it

    Novel substituted 2-methyl-3-indolylacetic derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their activity in vitro and in vivo on COX-1 and COX-2. Active compounds were screened to determine their gastrointestinal tolerability in vivo in the rat. Results showed that 3 and 4 preferentially inhibited COX-1 in vitro and in vivo. MD simulations indicated an induced fit for COX-1 but not for COX-2, probably because of a lower plasticity of the latter

    Searching for a tactile target: the impact of set-size on the N140cc

    The time needed to find a visual target amongst distractors (search task) can increase as a function of the distractors’ number (set-size) in the search-array (inefficient search). While the allocation of attention in search tasks has been extensively investigated and debated in the visual domain, little is known about these mechanisms in touch. Initial behavioral evidence shows inefficient search behavior when participants have to distinguish between target and distractors defined by their vibro-tactile frequencies. In the present study, to investigate the allocation of attention to items of the search-array we measured the N140cc during a tactile task in which the set-size was manipulated. The N140cc is a lateralized component of event-related brain potentials recently described as a psychophysiological marker of attentional allocation in tactile search tasks. Participants localized the target, a singleton frequency, while ignoring one, three or five homogeneous distractors. Results showed that error rates linearly increased as a function of set-size, while response times were not affected. Reliable N140cc components were observed for all set-sizes. Crucially, the N140cc amplitude decreased as the number of distractors increased. We argue that the presence of additional distractors hindered the preattentive analysis of the search array resulting in increased uncertainty about the target location (inefficient preattentive stage). This, in turn, increased the variability of the deployment of attention to the target, resulting in reduced N140cc amplitudes. Consistent with existing behavioral evidence, these findings highlight systematic differences between the visual and the tactile attentional systems

    Attitude toward prescription and clinical monitoring of lithium salts in a sample of Italian psychiatrists: preliminary data

    Results of international prescribing patterns show that lithium prescription and biochemical drug monitoring seem to differ from a country to another. In spite of clear-cut supporting scientific evidence lithium monitoring is often disregarded, incorrectly used or underused. In Italy the trend of lithium prescriptions and biochemical monitoring is far from what suggested in guidelines; even if there's an impressive paucity of data about lithium monitoring and related iatrogenic risks in our country. In order to assess the current attitude in Italy toward lithium treatment in bipolar disorder we asked to a number of senior psychiatrists, working within the national territory, to fill a 34 items interview. Items were grouped in 8 domains, ranging from prescription pattern to therapeutic drug monitoring and other safety measures to prevent iatrogenic harm during lithium therapy. A preliminary analysis of the very first data, collected mainly in Tuscany, suggested that overall knowledge about lithium prescription and biochemical monitoring were good and the few critical topics found in this preliminary study may be addressed with an improvement in information about lithium therapy
