In einem der wenigen Interviews, welche die kürzlich verstorbene Pina Bausch vor vielen Jahren gegeben hatte, wurde sie gefragt, warum in ihrem Tanztheater so wenig getanzt werde. Wie man sich bewege, so war die Antwort, interessiere sie weniger, als vielmehr, was bewege. Eine ähnliche Frage scheint in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten auch der Ausgangspunkt vieler Recherchen im Bereich des neuen Musik- bzw. Sprechtheaters zu sein, betrachtet man beispielsweise die Inszenierungen bzw. szenischen Projekte von Komponisten und Regisseuren wie Christoph Marthaler und Heiner Goebbels oder von bildenden Künstlern wie Robert Wilson und Romeo Castellucci. Keiner Sparte im engeren Sinne zuzuordnen, erproben sie eine Aufhebung der Spartengrenzen und streben die Geburt eines anderen Theaters an, aus dem Geist der Musik. Evaluating the use of cross-linked PVA nanoparticles for gene and drug delivery

Due to the safety concerns surrounding viral vectors, non-viral alternatives are desirable for fulfilling the aim of gene therapy. In this project gel mobility shift assays demonstrated how cross-linked PVA nanoparticles successfully form complexes with plasmid DNA and are of a size and charge that should, theoretically, permit endocytosis by eukaryotic cells. However, during in vitro transfection studies no reporter (GFP) gene expression was noted. The collective evidence from electroporation, fluorescent-DNA-tagging, Lipofectin® or calcium phosphate chimeric and chloroquine experiments suggest that a lack of cell uptake is responsible. Nevertheless, the same cross-linked PVA nanoparticles have been shown to exhibit much promise in the field of drug delivery during in vitro experiments, even when used to target the same cell types as those used during transfection studies. Nanagel®, a cross-linked PVA nanoparticle containing budesonide, achieved higher levels of drug delivery than a commercially available form of the same drug (Pulmicort®) after 1 or 24 hours drug exposure. Furthermore, by measuring superoxide production during a stimulated respiratory burst, the budesonide delivered to cells appears fully functional and significantly more effective than Pulmicort® in preventing the formation of reactive oxygen species, following a 24-hour pre-treatment period with the formulation. Tanaman industri memiliki andil besar dalam perkembangan ekonomi.pada perkembangan ekonomi Negara tanaman industri juga mengambil andil dalam perkembangan ekonomi masyarakat karena banyak pemilik lahan industri yang merupakan masyarakat sekitar. Dalam pemilihan tanaman industri yang cocok dan sesuai dengan keadaan lahan yang dimiliki dibutuhkannya sebuah rekomendasi tanaman industri, dengan banyaknya fariasi tanaman industri dan banyaknya perbedaan kondisi dari tiap lahan dibangunlah sebuah sistem yang memiliki kemampuan untuk memberikan rekomendasi tanaman industri yang sesuai dengan kondisi lahan. Dengan memanfaatkan algoritma multiple attribute decision making (MADM) dengan metode simple additive weighting(SAW) berhasil dibangun sebuah sistem yang dapat memberikan rekomendasi tanaman industri yang sesuai dengan lahansecara akurat.Berdasarkan hasil pengujian UAT yang dilakukan terhadap sistem, diketahui bahwa sistem memiliki rata –rata indeks persen sebesar 93,4%Kata Kunci:Ekonomi, multiple attribute decision making (MADM), lahan, simple additive weighting(SAW), tanaman industri

Scavenging by threatened turtles regulates freshwater ecosystem health during fish kills

Humans are increasing the frequency of fish kills by degrading freshwater ecosystems. Simultaneously, scavengers like freshwater turtles are declining globally, including in the Australian Murray–Darling Basin. Reduced scavenging may cause water quality problems impacting both ecosystems and humans. We used field and mesocosm experiments to test whether scavenging by turtles regulates water quality during simulated fish kills. In the field, we found that turtles were important scavengers of fish carrion. In mesocosms, turtles rapidly consumed carrion, and water quality in mesocosms with turtles returned to pre-fish kill levels faster than in turtle-free controls. Our experiments have important ecological implications, as they suggest that turtles are critical scavengers that regulate water quality in freshwater ecosystems. Recovery of turtle populations may be necessary to avoid the worsening of ecosystem health, particularly after fish kills, which would have devastating consequences for many freshwater species

An improved microtiter assay for evaluating anti-HIV-1 neutralizing antibodies from sera or plasma

BACKGROUND: The anti-HIV-1 neutralizing antibody assay is widely used in AIDS vaccine research and other experimental and clinical studies. The vital dye staining method applied in the detection of anti-HIV-1 neutralizing antibody has been used in many laboratories. However, the unknown factor(s) in sera or plasma affected cell growth and caused protection when the tested sera or plasma was continuously maintained in cell culture. In addition, the poor solubility of neutral red in medium (such as RPMI-1640) also limited the use of this assay. METHODS: In this study, human T cell line C8166 was used as host cells, and 3-(4,5-Dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) instead of neutral red was used as vital dye. In order to avoid the effect of the unknown factor(s), the tested sera or plasma was removed by a washout procedure after initial 3–6 h culture in the assay. RESULT: This new assay eliminated the effect of the tested sera or plasma on cell growth, improved the reliability of detection of anti-HIV-1 neutralizing antibody, and showed excellent agreement with the p24 antigen method. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the improved assay is relatively simple, highly duplicable, cost-effective, and well reliable for evaluating anti-HIV-1 neutralizing antibodies from sera or plasma
