Materials analysis of yttrium-barium-copper-oxide by micro-raman spectroscopy and optical microscopy
Effects of once-weekly semaglutide on appetite, energy intake, control of eating, food preference and body weight in subjects with obesity.
AIM: To investigate the mechanism of action for body weight loss with semaglutide. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, two-period crossover trial investigated the effects of 12 weeks treatment with once-weekly subcutaneous semaglutide, dose-escalated to 1.0 mg, in 30 subjects with obesity. Ad libitum energy intake, ratings of appetite, thirst, nausea and well-being, control of eating, food preference, resting metabolic rate, body weight and body composition were assessed. RESULTS: After a standardised breakfast, semaglutide, compared with placebo, led to a lower ad libitum energy intake during lunch (-1255 kJ; P < 0.0001), and during the subsequent evening meal (P = 0.0401) and snacks (P = 0.0034), resulting in a 24% reduction in total energy intake across all ad libitum meals throughout the day (-3036 kJ; P < 0.0001). Fasting overall appetite suppression scores were improved with semaglutide versus placebo, while nausea ratings were similar. Semaglutide was associated with less hunger and food cravings, better control of eating and a lower preference for high-fat foods. Resting metabolic rate, adjusted for lean body mass, did not differ between treatments. Semaglutide led to a reduction from baseline in mean body weight of 5.0 kg, predominantly from body fat mass. CONCLUSION: After 12 weeks' treatment, ad libitum energy intake was substantially lower with semaglutide versus placebo with a corresponding loss of body weight observed with semaglutide. In addition to reduced energy intake, likely mechanisms for semaglutide-induced weight loss included less appetite and food cravings, better control of eating and lower relative preference for fatty, energy-dense foods
Furrow application of insecticide as a method of controlling wireworms in potato land
Three methods of applying insecticides for the control of the wireworm, <i>Agriotes obscurus</i> L.. were tested using fonofos and terbufos. Most treatments gave significantly more marketable tubers than the control. The furrow treatment gave more consistent results than broadcast or side-dress and, at 1.1 or 2.2 kg a.i/ha, gave control equal to, or better than, the broadcast treatment at 5.6 kg a.i./ha. Analyses by gas chromatography using a flame photometric detector for residues in potatoes grown in treated soil showed residues to be less than 0.02 ppm
Heat Capacity in Magnetic and Electric Fields Near the Ferroelectric Transition in Tri-Glycine Sulfate
Specific-heat measurements are reported near the Curie temperature (~=
320 K) on tri-glycine sulfate. Measurements were made on crystals whose
surfaces were either non-grounded or short-circuited, and were carried out in
magnetic fields up to 9 T and electric fields up to 220 V/cm. In non-grounded
crystals we find that the shape of the specific-heat anomaly near is
thermally broadened. However, the anomaly changes to the characteristic sharp
-shape expected for a continuous transition with the application of
either a magnetic field or an electric field. In crystals whose surfaces were
short-circuited with gold, the characteristic -shape appeared in the
absence of an external field. This effect enabled a determination of the
critical exponents above and below , and may be understood on the basis
that the surface charge originating from the pyroelectric coefficient, ,

Efficacy of insecticides against tuber flea beetles, wireworms and aphids in potatoes
Soil-incorporated and foliar-applied insecticides, alone and in combination, were tested in silt loam to control tuber flea beetle, Epitrix tuberis Gent., the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulz.) and the wireworm Agriotes obscurus (L.) Most soil-incorporated band treatments did not give adequate protection from tuber flea beetles. However, supplemental foliar applications, July 15 and 30 and August 15, reduced the percentage unmarketable tubers to 13% under a heavy infestation in 1977 and to 0% in a lighter infestation in 1978. Fonofos, broadcast and soil-incorporated, gave the best control of wireworms and of a light infestation of tuber flea beetles. Methamidophos was the best aphicid
Self-recovery from disasters: an interdisciplinary perspective
This working paper presents the findings from a pilot research project that investigated how disaster-affected households in low- and middle-income countries rebuild their homes in situations where little or no support is available from humanitarian agencies. The project was an interdisciplinary collaboration involving social scientists, geoscientists, structural engineers and humanitarian practitioners.
The work was broad in scope. It investigated households’ self-recovery trajectories and the wide range of technical, environmental, institutional and socioeconomic factors influencing them over time. It also considered how safer construction practices can be more effectively integrated into humanitarian shelter responses

"Engaging with birth stories in pregnancy: a hermeneutic phenomenological study of women's experiences across two generations"
BACKGROUND: The birth story has been widely understood as a crucial source of knowledge about childbirth. What has not been reported is the effect that birth stories may have on primigravid women's understandings of birth. Findings are presented from a qualitative study exploring how two generations of women came to understand birth in the milieu of other's stories. The prior assumption was that birth stories must surely have a positive or negative influence on listeners, steering them towards either medical or midwifery-led models of care.
METHODS: A Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenological approach was used. Twenty UK participants were purposively selected and interviewed. Findings from the initial sample of 10 women who were pregnant in 2012 indicated that virtual media was a primary source of birth stories. This led to recruitment of a second sample of 10 women who gave birth in the 1970s-1980s, to determine whether they were more able to translate information into knowledge via stories told through personal contact and not through virtual technologies
RESULTS: Findings revealed the experience of 'being-in-the-world' of birth and of stories in that world. From a Heideggerian perspective, the birth story was constructed through 'idle talk' (the taken for granted assumptions of things, which come into being through language). Both oral stories and those told through technology were described as the 'modern birth story'. The first theme 'Stories are difficult like that', examines the birth story as problematic and considers how stories shape meaning. The second 'It's a generational thing', considers how women from two generations came to understand what their experience might be. The third 'Birth in the twilight of certainty,' examines women's experience of Being in a system of birth as constructed, portrayed and sustained in the stories being shared.
CONCLUSIONS: The women pregnant in 2012 framed their expectations in the language of choice, whilst the women who birthed in the 1970s-1980s framed their experience in the language of safety. For both, however, the world of birth was the same; saturated with, and only legitimised by the birth of a healthy baby. Rather than creating meaningful understanding, the 'idle talk' of birth made both cohorts fearful of leaving the relative comfort of the 'system', and of claiming an alternative birth
Dopant-induced crossover from 1D to 3D charge transport in conjugated polymers
The interplay between inter- and intra-chain charge transport in bulk
polythiophene in the hopping regime has been clarified by studying the
conductivity as a function of frequency (up to 3 THz), temperature and doping
level. We present a model which quantitatively explains the observed crossover
from quasi-one-dimensional transport to three-dimensional hopping conduction
with increasing doping level. At high frequencies the conductivity is dominated
