Abstractive Summarization as Augmentation for Document-Level Event Detection

Transformer-based models have consistently produced substantial performance gains across a variety of NLP tasks, compared to shallow models. However, deep models are orders of magnitude more computationally expensive than shallow models, especially on tasks with large sequence lengths, such as document-level event detection. In this work, we attempt to bridge the performance gap between shallow and deep models on document-level event detection by using abstractive text summarization as an augmentation method. We augment the DocEE dataset by generating abstractive summaries of examples from low-resource classes. For classification, we use linear SVM with TF-IDF representations and RoBERTa-base. We use BART for zero-shot abstractive summarization, making our augmentation setup less resource-intensive compared to supervised fine-tuning. We experiment with four decoding methods for text generation, namely beam search, top-k sampling, top-p sampling, and contrastive search. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of using document titles as additional input for classification. Our results show that using the document title offers 2.04% and 3.19% absolute improvement in macro F1-score for linear SVM and RoBERTa, respectively. Augmentation via summarization further improves the performance of linear SVM by about 0.5%, varying slightly across decoding methods. Overall, our augmentation setup yields insufficient improvements for linear SVM compared to RoBERTa

THE CHALLENGES AND POSSIBILITIES OF THE POPULARISATION OF LOCAL HISTORY - THE EXAMPLE OF EARLY-MODERN MILITARY FRONTIER AND HISTORY OF SENJ

U današnjem digitalnom svijetu, obilježenom globalizacijom i brzim prijenosom informacija na izvanredne udaljenosti, društveni i javni položaj historiografije – koja se našla u novim uvjetima bez presedana – dovedeni su u pitanje, posebno kada je riječ o izazovima popularizacije povijesti. Unutar niza pitanja koja popularizacija povijesti otvara, moguće je izdvojiti manju cjelinu koja nas ovdje zanima - lokalnu povijesti i njezinu prezentaciju. U ovom radu predstavit će se izazovi i mogućnosti popularizacije znanstveno utemeljenih spoznaja historiografije na primjeru senjske povijesti i projekta Bulwark of Europe.In today’s digital world, marked by globalisation and the rapid transfer of information over extraordinary distances, the social and public position of historiography - which has found itself in unprecedented new conditions - has been brought into question, particularly when it comes to the challenges of the popularisation of history. Within the series of questions that the popularisation of history raises, it is possible to separate a smaller part that interests us here – local history and its presentation. In this paper will be presented the challenges and possibilities of the popularisation of the scientifically-based knowledge of historiography using the example of Senj’s history and the Bulwark of Europe project

Urban dog spaces: the openness of dog-related government data in the city of Zagreb, Croatia *

Dogs and dog owners are increasingly present in modern urban spaces, and the construction and maintenance of urban infrastructure that includes places for them has become standard in most major cities. We wanted to investigate the extent to which the City of Zagreb is adhering to open data principles when it comes to dog-related data it makes available to citizens.The openness and quality of dog-related data was analysed in three steps. First, dog-related data was searched on various official websites and portals of the city and the data formats were ranked according to the five-star system for open data. In the second step, based on the available data, a field survey was conducted in 2020 to verify the found datasets and geocode them using a GPS device. In addition, the locations obtained from the local community of dog owners through social media were reviewed. Finally, data obtained from the survey was cross-checked with the government data to assess their quality. Government data on the locations of 300 dog waste bins and 72 green areas where dogs can be walked off-leash were available in Croatian from one or more government sources. All data sets found received the lowest score in terms of open data formats. Field survey revealed differences between the data and reality. The location of 40 dog waste bins could not be confirmed, and additional 53 bins were found that were not mentioned in the data. As for green areas, there were reportedly 10 dog parks in the city of Zagreb. The survey confirmed all locations and discovered 12 more, five of which were mentioned in the data but not designated as dog parks. The results suggest that the municipality needs to update the already open datasets more frequently. Improved implementation of these datasets into existing city data portals or the creation of a separate hub for dog owners would greatly improve the availability and reuse of this data by citizens

Slabljenje centralnih funkcija je proces koji karakterizira većinu ruralnih područja. U radu je razmatran razvoj središnjih funkcija Općine Sveti Križ Začretje i njihova gravitacijska snaga kroz prizmu promjene utjecaja reorganizacije teritorijalnog ustrojstva RH (obrazovna funkcija) i najrecentnijih procesa koji obuhvaćaju utjecaj okolnih gradova (funkcije rada i opskrbe) te prodor trgovačkih lanaca i racionalizaciju tržišne mreže. Ispitana je i uloga trgovačkog centra kao potencijalnog žarišta socijalne interakcije ruralnog stanovništva

The Influence of α-, β-, and γ-Melanocyte Stimulating Hormone on Acetaminophen Induced Liver Lesions in Male CBA Mice

Research over the past decade has indicated that melanocortin peptides are potent inhibitors of inflammation and a promising source of new anti-inflammatory andcytoprotective therapies. The purpose of the present paper is to compare protective effects of α-, β-, and γ-melanocyte stimulating hormone on acetaminophen induced liver lesions in male CBA mice. Acetaminophen was applied intragastrically in a dose of 150 mg/kg, and tested substances were applied intraperitoneally 1 hour before acetaminophen. Mice were sacrificed after 24 hours and intensity of liver injury was estimated by measurement of plasma transaminase activity (AST and ALT) and histopathological grading of lesions. It was found that α-, β-, and γ-MSH decrease intensity of lesions by both criteria in a dosedependent manner

Discutindo a educação ambiental no cotidiano escolar: desenvolvimento de projetos na escola formação inicial e continuada de professores

A presente pesquisa buscou discutir como a Educação Ambiental (EA) vem sendo trabalhada, no Ensino Fundamental e como os docentes desta escola compreendem e vem inserindo a EA no cotidiano escolar., em uma escola estadual do município de Tangará da Serra/MT, Brasil. Para tanto, realizou-se entrevistas com os professores que fazem parte de um projeto interdisciplinar de EA na escola pesquisada. Verificou-se que o projeto da escola não vem conseguindo alcançar os objetivos propostos por: desconhecimento do mesmo, pelos professores; formação deficiente dos professores, não entendimento da EA como processo de ensino-aprendizagem, falta de recursos didáticos, planejamento inadequado das atividades. A partir dessa constatação, procurou-se debater a impossibilidade de tratar do tema fora do trabalho interdisciplinar, bem como, e principalmente, a importância de um estudo mais aprofundado de EA, vinculando teoria e prática, tanto na formação docente, como em projetos escolares, a fim de fugir do tradicional vínculo “EA e ecologia, lixo e horta”.Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educació
