    Minimal AdS-Lorentz supergravity in three-dimensions

    The N=1\mathcal{N}=1 AdS-Lorentz superalgebra is studied and its relationship to semigroup expansion developed. Using this mathematical tool, the invariant tensors and Casimir operators are found. In terms of these invariants, a three-dimensionnal Chern--Simons supergravity action with AdS-Lorentz symmetry is constructed.     This study aims to identify the main differences and similarities of students’ subjectivity regarding the new skills’ assessment tools, developed by the Department of Educational Evaluation, Assessment and Registry at the University of Chile (DEMRE) for the new admissions system, in lieu of the current University Selection Test (PSU, for its acronym in Spanish). Drawing on semistructured interviews carried out with a sample of students, who participated in the first pilot study (2017) and were also registered in the latest PSU admission process (2018), the findings show that students recognize DEMRE’s proposal as positive on two counts; it is more relevant (regarding the assessed content) and fairer (equal opportunities). However, students from lower classes argue that these new assessment tools have the potential to produce new, less conspicuous forms of social segregation and, therefore, could possibly be less fair than the current test (PSU). Further research is needed to understand in greater depth the way in which the new assessment tools affect -performativity- students’ subjectivity in relation to social classes, particularly in the context of the implementation of these new assessment tools

    Stretched exponential relaxation for growing interfaces in quenched disordered media

    We study the relaxation for growing interfaces in quenched disordered media. We use a directed percolation depinning model introduced by Tang and Leschhorn for 1+1-dimensions. We define the two-time autocorrelation function of the interface height C(t',t) and its Fourier transform. These functions depend on the difference of times t-t' for long enough times, this is the steady-state regime. We find a two-step relaxation decay in this regime. The long time tail can be fitted by a stretched exponential relaxation function. The relaxation time is proportional to the characteristic distance of the clusters of pinning cells in the direction parallel to the interface and it diverges as a power law. The two-step relaxation is lost at a given wave length of the Fourier transform, which is proportional to the characteristic distance of the clusters of pinning cells in the direction perpendicular to the interface. The stretched exponential relaxation is caused by the existence of clusters of pinning cells and it is a direct consequence of the quenched noise.Comment: 4 pages and 5 figures.     Data sources for rescuing the rich heritage of Mediterranean historical surface climate data

    10.1002/gdj3.4Availability of long-term and high-quality instrumental climate records is still insufficient and the rich heritage of meteorological surface observations is largely underexploited in many parts of the world. This is particularly striking over the Greater Mediterranean region (GMR), where meteorological observations have been taken since the 18th century at some locations. The lack of high quality and long series here is despite this region being regarded as a climate change hot spot. This article mainly assesses relevant sources containing Mediterranean historical climate data and metadata either from online repositories worldwide or physical archives, with the emphasis here on the rich holdings kept at French archives. A particular case study is the data rescue (DARE) program undertaken by the Algerian National Meteorological Service, as well as some of the past and ongoing projects and initiatives aimed at enhancing climate data availability and accessibility over the GMR. Our findings point to the high potential for undertaking DARE activities over the GMR and the need for bringing longer and higher quality climate time series to support a diverse number of scientific and technical assessments and policies

    Complex viscosity behavior and cluster formation in attractive colloidal systems

    The increase of the viscosity, which is observed in attractive colloidal systems by varying the temperature or the volume fraction, can be related to the formation of structures due to particle aggregation. In particular we have studied the non trivial dependence of the viscosity from the temperature and the volume fraction in the copolymer-micellar system L64. The comparison of the experimental data with the results of numerical simulations in a simple model for gelation phenomena suggests that this intriguing behavior can be explained in terms of cluster formation and that this picture can be quite generally extended to other attractive colloidal systems.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Glass transition in granular media

    In the framework of schematic hard spheres lattice models for granular media we investigate the phenomenon of the ``jamming transition''. In particular, using Edwards' approach, by analytical calculations at a mean field level, we derive the system phase diagram and show that ``jamming'' corresponds to a phase transition from a ``fluid'' to a ``glassy'' phase, observed when crystallization is avoided. Interestingly, the nature of such a ``glassy'' phase turns out to be the same found in mean field models for glass formers.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

    A multilayer microperforated panel prototype for broadband sound absorption at low frequencies

    Microperforated panel (MPP) absorbers are one of the most promising alternatives to porous sound absorbing materials. However, these structures cannot achieve high and broadband absorption at low frequencies. To be effective, once defined the material properties the geometrical parameters of the absorber need to be optimized to match the prescribed absorption level. This paper presents a multiple layer MPP absorber with a high sound absorption coefficient and broadband absorption at low frequencies. An electro-acoustical equivalent circuit model was used for a parametric analysis to study the relationships between the absorption mechanism and the absorbers geometrical parameters in the proposed multilayer MPP. A prototype of this absorber was machined and tested in an impedance tube test ring and the experimental acoustical properties in terms of absorption coefficient were extracted using the transfer function method. It was demonstrated that the five-layer MPP absorber was capable of guaranteeing a high absorption (constantly over 90%) in a frequency range from 400 to 2000 Hz. The results indicate that the proposed multilayer MPP absorber provides a good alternative for sound absorption applications.</p
