Application of computer-aided dispatch in law enforcement: An introductory planning guide
A set of planning guidelines for the application of computer-aided dispatching (CAD) to law enforcement is presented. Some essential characteristics and applications of CAD are outlined; the results of a survey of systems in the operational or planning phases are summarized. Requirements analysis, system concept design, implementation planning, and performance and cost modeling are described and demonstrated with numerous examples. Detailed descriptions of typical law enforcement CAD systems, and a list of vendor sources, are given in appendixes
Agricultural Change and Farmland Rental in an Urbanising Environment : Waterloo Region, Southern Ontario
In geographic research into urbanisation-agriculture interactions, a strong emphasis has been given to the negative effects of urbanisation on agriculture. Here, it is argued that the urbanisation-agriculture interaction process may provide certain opportunities for agricultural progress and development, depending upon the specific regional circumstances; the phenomenon of farmland renting from nonfarm landowners is thus studied as an example of such a potentially beneficial interaction. Statistical associations between agricultural and population variables for an area in southern Ontario provide the context for a detailed farmer survey. The results show farmland rental from nonfarm owners to be a significant factor in agricultural development in the urban fringe environment of the medium-sized, yet fast-growing cities in the study area, and add to recent literature which has stressed the complexities of urban fringe agriculture

Bringing Salary Transparency to the World: Computing Robust Compensation Insights via LinkedIn Salary
The recently launched LinkedIn Salary product has been designed with the goal
of providing compensation insights to the world's professionals and thereby
helping them optimize their earning potential. We describe the overall design
and architecture of the statistical modeling system underlying this product. We
focus on the unique data mining challenges while designing and implementing the
system, and describe the modeling components such as Bayesian hierarchical
smoothing that help to compute and present robust compensation insights to
users. We report on extensive evaluation with nearly one year of de-identified
compensation data collected from over one million LinkedIn users, thereby
demonstrating the efficacy of the statistical models. We also highlight the
lessons learned through the deployment of our system at LinkedIn.Comment: Conference information: ACM International Conference on Information

Diploma in Education? Rethinking the Curriculum.
For well over half a century the traditional end-on diploma year has been under fire from university departments, students, and the teaching profession. How is it possible in one year for students to reach adequate levels of knowledge and understanding in a large number of subjects, epistemologicalIy diverse and frequently outside their undergraduate experience? The answer of course, is that it is not possible to believe otherwise is to labour under gross delusion. A university department of education, acting with the best of intentions, cannot give more than cursory attention to even the most essential elements of a preservice programme within an abbreviated academic year
Longitudinal Assessment of Antisaccades in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis
We have previously demonstrated that assessment of antisaccades (AS) provides not only measures of motor function in multiple sclerosis (MS), but measures of cognitive control processes in particular, attention and working memory. This study sought to demonstrate the potential for AS measures to sensitively reflect change in functional status in MS. Twenty-four patients with relapsing-remitting MS and 12 age-matched controls were evaluated longitudinally using an AS saccade task. Compared to control subjects, a number of saccade parameters changed significantly over a two year period for MS patients. These included saccade error rates, latencies, and accuracy measures. Further, for MS patients, correlations were retained between OM measures and scores on the PASAT, which is considered the reference task for the cognitive evaluation of MS patients. Notably, EDSS scores for these patients did not change significantly over this period. These results demonstrate that OM measures may reflect disease evolution in MS, in the absence of clinically evident changes as measured using conventional techniques. With replication, these markers could ultimately be developed into a cost-effective, non-invasive, and well tolerated assessment tool to assist in confirming progression early in the disease process, and in measuring and predicting response to therapy
A cohort study of influences, health outcomes and costs of patients' health-seeking behaviour for minor ailments from primary and emergency care settings
To compare health-related and cost-related outcomes of consultations for symptoms suggestive of minor ailments in emergency departments (EDs), general practices and community pharmacies
Investigating the missing data mechanism in quality of life outcomes: a comparison of approaches
Background: Missing data is classified as missing completely at random (MCAR), missing at
random (MAR) or missing not at random (MNAR). Knowing the mechanism is useful in identifying
the most appropriate analysis. The first aim was to compare different methods for identifying this
missing data mechanism to determine if they gave consistent conclusions. Secondly, to investigate
whether the reminder-response data can be utilised to help identify the missing data mechanism.
Methods: Five clinical trial datasets that employed a reminder system at follow-up were used.
Some quality of life questionnaires were initially missing, but later recovered through reminders.
Four methods of determining the missing data mechanism were applied. Two response data
scenarios were considered. Firstly, immediate data only; secondly, all observed responses
(including reminder-response).
Results: In three of five trials the hypothesis tests found evidence against the MCAR assumption.
Logistic regression suggested MAR, but was able to use the reminder-collected data to highlight
potential MNAR data in two trials.
Conclusion: The four methods were consistent in determining the missingness mechanism. One
hypothesis test was preferred as it is applicable with intermittent missingness. Some inconsistencies between the two data scenarios were found. Ignoring the reminder data could potentially give a distorted view of the missingness mechanism. Utilising reminder data allowed the possibility of MNAR to be considered. The Chief Scientist Office of the Scottish Government Health Directorate.

PLM in design and engineering education: International perspectives
Technological advances in the last decade have influenced changes in the design and engineering industries on a global scale. Lean and collaborative product development are approaches increasingly adopted by the industry and seen as the core of product lifecycle management. These trends have created the need for new skilled professionals, and universities should adapt their curricula in response. There is an increased need for academia to work with industry in order to meet these challenges. This article reports on the Parametric Technology Corporation Academic Research Symposium held in April 2011. The topics were centred around understanding the essence of product lifecycle management and its impact on design and engineering education. Furthermore, examples of implementing product lifecycle management and collaborative practices in higher education were presented from the United States and France. This article concludes with a discussion of the recommendations made at the symposium for the future development and support of key skills across university curricula
