Investigating the Potential of a Combined Air Quality-heat Index in Predicting Mortality

    Get PDF
Although the development of the Air Quality Index (AQI) has been significant in informing and protecting the public, it may not be entirely reflective of the health effects from exposure to air pollutants. Meteorological factors that are considered in the heat index (HI), temperature and relative humidity, are not considered when calculating the AQI. It may be important to consider certain meteorological factors when assessing the quality of the air because such factors affect the dynamics of air movement as well as the formation of certain pollutants.Through a series of Quasi-Poisson regression models, we investigated whether the relationship between the AQI and mortality could be strengthened by considering elements of the HI. We found that models that included some form of temperature and relative humidity as explanatory variables exhibited stronger associations to mortality than models that only considered the AQI. These results further support our hypothesis that including elements of the HI when assessing the quality of the air may improve the AQI’s skill in predicting mortality. Our analyses revealed that a combined air quality-heat index may have merit; by including the meteorological elements of the heat index in assessing air quality, the relationship between air quality and mortality was strengthened in some cases

According to What Nomos: Understanding Romans 2 in Conversation with Diaspora Jewish Conceptions of Nomos

The law (nomos) functions as a central piece of Paul\u27s argument in the second chapter of his letter to the community in Rome. Throughout his argument Paul\u27s references to nomos carry such complexity that there is significant disagreement about how to understand this nomos. On the one hand, scholars debate over the degree to which Greco-Roman conceptions of nomos shape the understanding of nomos present in Romans 2. On the other hand, Paul appears to have the Jewish law in mind, and there is no consensus about how Paul conceives of the Jewish law in his argument, given the similarities with Greco-Roman conceptions of nomos. In this dissertation, I attempt to explain the conception of nomos in Romans 2. I begin in chapter one by isolating three central components of Paul\u27s conception of nomos: (1) it is universal, (2) its instruction applies to Gentiles--they are capable of doing the things of the law, (3) it is somehow particularly Jewish. To explain this complex conception of nomos I propose to focus on explanations of the Jewish law found in Second Temple Diaspora Jewish literature which participates in a common political-ethical discourse within the Greco-Roman world. Chapter two outlines a grammar of nomos among Greek and Roman writers, and it focuses on how expressions of universal and transcendent nomos grew out of problems with particular nomos. Chapter three discusses the relation between particular and transcendent nomos and the ethical claims that Greek and Roman writers made on the basis of the common nomos discourse in order to elevate Greek or Roman ways of life as most virtuous. Chapter four investigates important Diaspora Jewish writers who participate in this common web of discourse in their attempts to explain and interpret the Jewish law and elevate it as the most virtuous. In chapter five I interpret Romans 2, arguing that Paul makes use of elements common to the Diaspora Jewish explanations of the law to argue that both Jews and Gentiles are indeed equal in that neither group lives up to God\u27s one universal nomos

For this document, solutions are given to two previously proposed scenarios, in which the solution of two cases is sought using Cisco devices and all the basic configurations necessary for the application of the scenarios to be 100% functional. For this, we will be configuring Router and Switch devices and we will use the Packet Tracer simulator. We will understand, we will handle basic concepts such as Routing, Subnetting, VLAN, Port Security and finally we will verify connectivity with the IPv4 and IPv6 protocols through Ping commands, verifying that the solution was given and that the network is 100% functional

An Examination of the Practicability of COBIT Framework and the Proposal of a COBIT-BSC Model

Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology (COBIT) becomes very popular in recent years and is regarded as the most comprehensive IT governance framework. However, its actual utilization and effectiveness are not clear due to the lack of academic studies. Also, the proliferation of other IT standards and best practices, such as ISO27000 series and ITIL, creates great challenges for organizations to understand their relations and to take advantage of them. The main objective of this research is to explore the practicability of COBIT framework and its actual usage. A pilot COBIT program within an IT department was carried out to collect primary data. The actual usage of COBIT tools is analyzed and compared to their theoretical design. Practical problems of COBIT framework are identified. A COBIT-BSC model is proposed to illustrate a simple way of structuring COBIT control objectives. This study will contribute some practical insights to COBIT framework and help organizations take advantage of COBIT as well as other IT control frameworks.Algorithms and the Foundations of Software technolog

Mapping and conceptualizing the measurement of organizational social value using systems thinking

Studies about social value have been devoted to issues or phenomena, projects, or activities of organizations but none have evaluated the organizational social value as oppose to economic value. Our question is: in the field of business and economics, how has organizational social value been scholarly or academically analyzed? By performing a systematic literature review of articles, and using scientometric analysis of 45 articles. 34 out of the 45 articles were mapped into the extended systems thinking: input, process, output and environment (IPOE) framework. Our results indicate that: a) input and environment dimensions have been most researched while process and output have been least researched; b) applicability of the IPOE framework as a mapping tool for organizational social value but requires further confirmation; and c) social value creation nonprofit, hybrid and for-profit organizations may be linked together. Our research would be helpful for organizations interested in measuring their social value.Coherent privaatrech

Translation, Cross-Cultural Adaptation, and Preliminary Validation of the Transsexual Voice Questionnaire for Male-to-Female Transsexuals (I-TVQ MtF) Into Italian

Summary: Objective. To perform a cross-cultural adaptation into Italian and to analyse reliability and valid-ity of the Transsexual Voice Questionnaire for male-to-female transsexuals (I-TVQMtF).Study Design.Cross-sectional nonrandomized survey study.Methods.For item-generation, a cross-cultural adaptation and translation process was performed followingstandard guidelines. Transgender women were consecutively recruited and asked tofill out the I-TVQMtFand aform on social, demographic and transition-related variables. Firstly, data collected from participants were usedto perform confirmatory factor analysis, and to evaluate internal consistency and test-retest reliability Subse-quently, convergent validity was evaluated comparing I-TVQMtFtotal scores with the two extra items addressingself-perception (SPVF) and aspiration (AVF) of voice femininity. To evaluate convergent validity, scores of theItalian version of the Voice Handicap Index were considered for comparisons. A correlation analysis was per-formed to verify potential association between I-TVQMtFscores and social, demographic and transition-relatedvariables.Results.Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated that a two-factor modelfits data better than the unidimen-sional one. Both internal consistency and test retest reliability of the I-TVQMtFwere satisfactory. Negative corre-lations were highlighted between I-TVQMtFscores on one side and self-perception vocal functioning andaspiration vocal functioning on the other. Positive correlations between I-TVQMtFand Italian version of theVoice Handicap Index scores were also found. Finally, negative correlations were demonstrated between I-TVQMtFscores and time spent living in the female role.Conclusion.The I-TVQMtFappears to be a reliable and valid instrument for the assessment of voice-relatedquality of life in transgender women
