Hamiltonian four fold 1:1 resonance with two rotational symmetries

In this communication we deal with the analysis of Hamiltonian Hopf bifurcations in 4-DOF systems defined by perturbed isotropic oscillators (1-1-1-1 resonance), in the presence of two quadratic symmetries I 1 and I 2. As a perturbation we consider a polynomial function with a parameter. After normalization, the truncated normal form gives rise to an integrable system which is analyzed using reduction to a one degree of freedom system. The Hamiltonian Hopf bifurcations are found using the ‘geometric method’ set up by one of the authors

Bifurcations of the Hamiltonian fourfold 1:1 resonance with toroidal symmetry

This paper deals with the analysis of Hamiltonian Hopf as well as saddle-centre bifurcations in 4-DOF systems defined by perturbed isotropic oscillators (1:1:1:1 resonance), in the presence of two quadratic symmetries ¿ and L1. When we nor- malize the system with respect to the quadratic part of the energy and carry out a reduction with respect to a 3-torus group we end up with a 1-DOF system with several parameters on the thrice reduced phase space. Then, we focus our analysis on the evolution of relative equilibria around singular points of this reduced phase space. In particular, dealing with the Hamiltonian Hopf bifurcation the `geometric approach' is used, following the steps set up by one of the authors in the context of 3-DOF systems. In order to see the interplay between integrals and physical param- eters in the analysis of bifurcations, we consider as perturbation a one-parameter family, which in particular includes one of the classical Stark-Zeeman models (par- allel case) in 3 dimension

Sparse N-way Partial Least Squares by L1-penalization

[EN] N-PLS, as the natural extension of PLS to N-way structures, tries to maximize the covariance between an X and a Y N-way data arrays. It provides a useful framework for fitting prediction models to N-way data. However, N-PLS by itself does not perform variable selection, which indeed can facilitate interpretation in different situations (e.g. the so-called ¿¿omics¿ data). In this work, we propose a method for variable selection within N-PLS by introducing sparsity in the weights matrices WJ and WK by means of L1-penalization. The sparse version of N-PLS is able to provide lower prediction errors by filtering all the noise variables and to further improve interpretability and usability of the N-PLS results. To test Sparse N-PLS performance two different simulated data sets were used, whereas to show its utility in a biological context a real time course metabolomics data set was used.Hervás-Marín, D.; Prats-Montalbán, JM.; Garcia-Cañaveras, J.; Lahoz Rodríguez, AG.; Ferrer, A. Magnetism in Dense Quark Matter

We review the mechanisms via which an external magnetic field can affect the ground state of cold and dense quark matter. In the absence of a magnetic field, at asymptotically high densities, cold quark matter is in the Color-Flavor-Locked (CFL) phase of color superconductivity characterized by three scales: the superconducting gap, the gluon Meissner mass, and the baryonic chemical potential. When an applied magnetic field becomes comparable with each of these scales, new phases and/or condensates may emerge. They include the magnetic CFL (MCFL) phase that becomes relevant for fields of the order of the gap scale; the paramagnetic CFL, important when the field is of the order of the Meissner mass, and a spin-one condensate associated to the magnetic moment of the Cooper pairs, significant at fields of the order of the chemical potential. We discuss the equation of state (EoS) of MCFL matter for a large range of field values and consider possible applications of the magnetic effects on dense quark matter to the astrophysics of compact stars.Comment: To appear in Lect. Sub-millimeter Tests of the Gravitational Inverse-square Law

Motivated by a variety of theories that predict new effects, we tested the gravitational 1/r^2 law at separations between 10.77 mm and 137 microns using two different 10-fold azimuthally symmetric torsion pendulums and rotating 10-fold symmetric attractors. Our work improves upon other experiments by up to a factor of about 100. We found no deviation from Newtonian physics at the 95% confidence level and interpret these results as constraints on extensions of the Standard Model that predict Yukawa or power-law forces. We set a constraint on the largest single extra dimension (assuming toroidal compactification and that one extra dimension is significantly larger than all the others) of R <= 160 microns, and on two equal-sized large extra dimensions of R <= 130 microns. Yukawa interactions with |alpha| >= 1 are ruled out at 95% confidence for lambda >= 197 microns. Extra-dimensions scenarios stabilized by radions are restricted to unification masses M >= 3.0 TeV/c^2, regardless of the number of large extra dimensions. We also provide new constraints on power-law potentials V(r)\propto r^{-k} with k between 2 and 5 and on the gamma_5 couplings of pseudoscalars with m <= 10 meV/c^2.Comment: 34 pages, 38 figure
