When adoption does occur, the most important aspect is that it should be in the best interests of the child. Since 1994 the Department of Welfare has gradually moved away from the notion of social welfare to that of social development. The state department has redefined its role in social policy from caregiver to enabler, and its aim to the empowerment of individuals, families and communities. This means that the existing models of assistance, which often place a client in a dependent role, have to be revised. The strengths perspective, along with a solution-focused model, may provide an answer in this regard. This approach moves away from a focus on problems to a context in which solutions based on the strengths of the client receive attention. Instead of an analyst trying to determine and explain the causes of a problem, the therapist becomes a facilitator of the client’s own achievement of the desired empowerment

TEACHING SOCIAL WORK VALUES BY MEANS OF SOCRATIC QUESTIONING

This article provides an outline of the challenging process of teaching, acquiring and internalising social work values, which form an important aspect on which ultimate ethical decision making with clients rests. The supposition is that treating clients impartially, reasonably and justly is dependent on students’ understanding and awareness of their thinking about their thinking. Becoming a strong-sense thinker implies a cultivated disposition of mind without privileging one’s own views and being skilled in the ability to formulate a disciplined line of questioning. The use of Socratic Questioning (SQ) as a form of professional socialisation to teaching professional values may enable students to eventually develop into reflective practitioners.

Emotional activation in human beings: procedures for experimental stress induction

The study about the effects of stress on cognition and behavior is an area of special interest and research development for psychology and neurosciences. Stress induction is an essential element for these studies, because it enables the manipulation of this kind of emotional activation as an independent variable to prove its effect over behavior. Nevertheless, this induction must be enough to produce a significant increase in cortisol levels and, at the same time, to achieve the stablished ethical standards for experiments with human beings. This article aims to provide a general review about emotional activation in order to deepen the procedures used in the experimental induce stress in human beings. The conclusion is that the elaboration of more efficient protocols is required, and the use of simulation and other technologic tools could be very useful.O estudo dos efeitos do estresse sobre a cognição e o comportamento é uma área de especial interesse e desenvolvimento investigativo tanto para a psicologia como para as neurociências. A introdução de estresse constitui um elemento fundamental nestes estudos, pois permite a manipulação desta forma de ativação emocional como variável independente, para observar o seu efeito sobre o comportamento; porém, esta indução deve ser suficiente para gerar incrementos significativos nos níveis de cortisol e ao mesmo tempo cumprir os padrões éticos estabelecidos para a experimentação com humanos. O presente artigo tem como propósito aportar uma revisão geral sobre a ativação emocional, para afundar nos procedimentos utilizados na indução experimental de estresse em sujeitos humanos. Conclui-se que é requerido a elaboração de protocolos mais eficientes, e para tal, o uso de simulações e outras ferramentas tecnológicas pode ser de grande utilidade.L’étude des effets du stress sur la cognition et le comportement est un domaine d’intérêt particulier et de développement de la recherche tant pour la psychologie que pour les neurosciences. L’induction du stress constitue un élément fondamental de ces études, car elle permet la manipulation de ce mode d’activation émotionnelle en tant que variable indépendante, afin d’observer son effet sur le comportement; cependant, cette induction devrait être suffisante pour provoquer des augmentations significatives des taux de cortisol tout en respectant les normes éthiques établies pour l’expérimentation humaine. Le but de cet article est d’effectuer une revue générale de l’activation émotionnelle afin d’approfondir les procédures utilisées dans l’induction expérimentale du stress chez l’homme. Cet article conclut que la conception de protocoles plus efficaces est nécessaire; à cette fin, l’utilisation de simulations et d’autres outils technologiques peut être très utile.El estudio de los efectos del estrés sobre la cognición y el comportamiento es un área de especial interés y desarrollo científico, tanto para la Psicología como para las Neurociencias. Fostering awareness of self in the education of social work students by means of critical reflectivity

Fostering awareness of self in the education of social work students has focused primarily on a micro-conceptualisation of the self, which implies that the attention was, and still is, mainly on the intrapsychic processes brought about by theory and field practicum. The main argument is that the self should also encompass a macro-conceptualisation, where students have to ask themselves how they contribute to the maintenance of societal structures and how these structures influence them in the forming of their assumptions and belief systems about the self and the world. Three categories of critical-reflectivity questions asked about a parable on death and dying in a class discussion can sensitise students about the self as a product and a co-creator of society in the grieving process. These questions furthermore resonate an African-centred world view in the understanding of the self

Quebrando estereótipos: o papel do mediador na valorização do negro na literatura infantil

A presença de personagens negros na literatura infantil no Brasil esteve distante dos livros durante muito tempo, isso por conta de uma formação basicamente eurocêntrica. Somente na década de 1980, no Brasil, surgem os primeiros livros para o público infantil com protagonistas negros. De lá para cá, o mercado editorial alavancou com diversas obras com personagens negros representados. O objetivo dessas produções é desconstruir estereótipos negativos acerca dos mesmos na sociedade. Para que sejam desconstruídos tais estereótipos, é preciso não somente escolher uma boa história, mas também saber mediar às discussões/diálogos entre as crianças. A partir dessa perspectiva, esta comunicação tem como objetivo analisar o papel do mediador entre as crianças e os livros infantis com personagens femininas negras. AN ANALYSIS OF, AND DIFFERENT APPROACH TO, CHALLENGES IN FOSTER CARE PRACTICE IN SOUTH AFRICA

Foster care is perceived to be the best and most widely applied form of alternative care for children besides their maternal home, because it most often occurs within the family context and is supposed to offer safety and protection to children. Despite the various advantages that foster care offers, it is known that foster care practice worldwide – including in South Africa – is suffering from serious deficiencies. Therefore it is questionable whether it serves the best interests of the child at all times and whether the principle of social justice is adhered to. As Bass, Shields and Behrman (2004:5) state:“For too many of these children, foster care is no safe haven.
