Faced with a rapidly ageing society and in constant technological progression, studies focused on fostering communicative action and reducing social isolation, associated to seniorsʼ biopsychosocial losses, have become relevant. This thesis has four objectives: i) it intends to study the impact of the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) on a group of seniors' self-concept, mood and quality of life; ii) understand whether there is and what is the influence of the independent variables gender, age, marital status, education, professional occupation, frequency scheme, time in IPSS, guidance to the institution, and family and friendsʼ visit and the dependent variables self-concept, mood, quality of life, and its inherent factors and domains, in pre and post-test; iii) understand if older adults participation on the conceptualization of an asynchronous communication service, email, influences its usability concerning the components effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction; and iv) create the online community policy that comes under the project SEDUCE. For this doctoral work, four partnerships were established with four day-care centres from Aveiro, in the context of the research project SEDUCE. The instruments used in the evaluation of seniors' self-concept, mood, and quality of life were the Clinical Inventory of Self-concept, the Philadelphia geriatric center morale scale, and the WHOQOL-Bref Quality of Life Scale, respectively. In the process of email and policy component conceptualization we used the participative observation and contextual design methods. The study involved the participation of 42 older adults, distributed in two conditions – 22 older adults in the experimental group used ICT, twice a week (each session of 90 minutes), and 19 older adults in the passive control group had no intervention. Two evaluation moments were held, before and after 11 months of intervention, from August 2011 to July 2012. During the sessions of involvement with ICT it was observed that the seniors have continuous difficulties: manipulating the mouse and perceiving their action on the monitor; making the distinction between keys (spacebar and delete key; caps lock key); use double keys to place punctuation and accentuation; initiating activities in Microsoft Office Word; selecting the search information in search engines; perceiving the clickable areas; lacking confidence in effect actions; fear to start new activities, fear of making mistakes memorizing email addresses and passwords; and giving continuity to tasks. When using email services, seniors consider important to obtain a response to the messages sent, and to respond to all received messages, expressing great satisfaction when receiving messages from relatives and/or friends. The difficulty identified when using the email, was that seniors rarely write the subject of the messages. The active participation of seniors in the development of services revealed to be possible but also necessary to adapt the methods used: the process should be iterative; need to avoid formal language; need to clarify the goal of the activity, let seniors think aloud and give them time to perform the activity; keep them focused and do not drive them in the tasks. Results suggest that in the experimental group the physical domain of quality of life had a significant increase. The participants who expressed greater satisfaction when using ICT present a more positive perspective on the psychological maturity and less loneliness and dissatisfaction. In experimental group and passive control group there are relationships between the independent and the dependent variables, either at pre-test and post-test. We conclude that the seniors' participation in the development of the asynchronous communication service fostered the effectiveness component of its usability, but not the satisfaction in its context of use. The results regarding efficiency are inconclusive. Concerning the political component seniors validate the existence of terms of use that guide the behavior of all users, as well as a privacy policy that ensures confidentiality and security. The registration area proposed is appropriate for the senior user

Dental caries is a major global public health problem. It is this study’s goal to gather epidemiological data on the oral health status of children from an inner city school and a periphery/suburban school in Luanda. Objectives: To investigate oral health behaviors, dental caries prevalence and gravity in the studied population as well as to search for differences between the two schools. Subjects and Methods: Observational and transversal study, data collection via questionnaire and intra-oral observations, performed by a previously calibrated observer. WHO`s 1997 dental caries diagnosis criteria were used. Descriptive statistical analysis was done and the Mann-Whitney and Qui-square tests were used, with a 5% significance level. Results: The 107 children sample showed an average age of 8,66±0,494 years. The majority of children (96,2%) ate sweets between meals; 56,1% brushed their teeth once a day; 68% do not brush before bedtime, and only 32,7% had been to a dentist. The dental caries prevalence was 81% for the deciduous dentition, and 37, 4% for the permanent dentition. The dmft 3,18±2,657 score was 18±2,657 and the DMFT score was 0,60±0,889. The inner city children showed less caries gravity for the deciduous dentition in comparison to the periphery/suburban children. The sugar intake frequency, the brushing of teeth, the brushing of teeth before bedtime and the dental appointments were also statistically different between both schools. Conclusions: The results show that dental caries should be acknowledged as a major public health problem in Luanda, with high prevalence and gravity in the deciduous dentition, indicating an urging need for intervention especially among the less favored communities

Narrative art is as old as human kind and assumes itself as a fundamental element of everyday life. In this sense, since a narrative is a story that presents a diegetic universe composed of real or imaginary events, lived by fictional or true beings in a given time and space, this paper’s objective is to establish and present some thought about the video competition held by the School of Education from Viseu as a laboratory for narrative creativity. This initiative, which has already held twelve editions, integrates itself within the sphere of the institution's cultural activities and it is an encouragement space for short cinematographic creations. In parallel, it aims to stimulate the talent, the creativity and the quality of the work submitted. In this contest, the students are invited, individually or in small groups, to create a short film with a maximum duration of 10 minutes, in Portuguese or in English and authors are free to propose the theme. The genres accepted in the competition are fiction, documentary and animation. The analysis of this experience allows us to list several positive aspects, such as the added value of the academic competition of short films as a mean to motivate and encourage Portuguese cinematographic production within an academic context, as well as to allow the development of skills in filming, editing and post-production by students from different study cycles.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The COVID-19 pandemic has imposed unprecedented changes and challenges to the ways of learning, teaching, and communicating within educational institutions. Prophylactic isolation measures, adopted globally, have discontinued face-to-face teaching and precipitated distance learning. This reality highlighted the importance of online courses as creative initiatives to overcome space and time constraints in a limited pedagogical context. It was in this scope that the Project "Exploration of online methodologies in the development of competencies in the audiovisual area" emerged, proposing the creation of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in the audiovisual area (from the idea to the final product) and the development of the online platform LOOP for the implementation and availability of this and other courses held afterward. The project involves three Portuguese higher education institutions and one Spanish one, motivated to develop innovative proposals, both in research and education. Moreover, this network presents a diversity of training in degree courses, master's, and technological specialization programs, which allows us a privileged contact with the students and helps us establish priorities and needs. This paper focuses on the survey and analysis, at the national and international level, of MOOCs dedicated to the themes of audiovisual production to expose parameters of both organizational and content scope. The methodological approach will be divided into two phases: a) identification of the criteria for analyzing courses through the literature review; b) and selection of the courses to be analyzed. This selection will be conducted through a database search, identifying the keywords in Portuguese, English, and Spanish: audiovisual online course; audiovisual free course; filmmaking course; scriptwriting course; video editing course; and other derivations. It is hoped to present a set of guidelines for developing the course related to the organization and the content.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

This article presents a literature review about media consumption and content sharing on the Internet and is part of a research project that aims to outline and understand practices shared among students of a specific Portuguese higher education institution. Much of the studies found allow us to conclude that students that currently attend higher education are used to multitasking and are active users of online devices, platforms and services in both personal and learning contexts. Research shows that the presence of technology and social media in the daily life of young people is no longer just a growing trend but rather a current fact, which produces intensive and participatory communication dynamics.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
