    The Electronic Medical Record (EMR) integrates heterogeneous information within a Healthcare Institution stressing the need for security and access control. The Biostatistics and Medical Informatics Department from Porto Faculty of Medicine has recently implemented a Virtual EMR (VEMR) in order to integrate patient information and clinical reports within a university hospital. With more than 500 medical doctors using the system on a daily basis, an access control policy and model were implemented. However, the healthcare environment has unanticipated situations (i.e. emergency situations) where access to information is essential. Most traditional policies do not allow for overriding. A policy that allows for Break-The-Glass (BTG) was implemented in order to override access control whilst providing for non-repudiation mechanisms for its usage. The policy was easily integrated within the model confirming its modularity and the fact that user intervention in defining security procedures is crucial to its successful implementation and use

    TOFtracker: combination of time-of-flight and high-accuracy bidimensional tracking in a single gaseous detector

    A 5-gap timing RPC equipped with patterned electrodes coupled to both charge-sensitive and timing circuits yields a time accuracy of 77 ps along with a position accuracy of 38 ÎŒm. These results were obtained by calculating the straight-line fit residuals to the positions provided by a 3-layer telescope made out of identical detectors, detecting almost perpendicular cosmic-ray muons. The device may be useful for particle identification by time-of-flight, where simultaneous measurements of trajectory and time are necessary

    Refining the domain architecture model of the replication origin firing factor Treslin/TICRR

    Faithful genome duplication requires appropriately controlled replication origin firing. The metazoan origin firing regulation hub Treslin/TICRR and its yeast orthologue Sld3 share the Sld3-Treslin domain and the adjacent TopBP1/Dpb11 interaction domain. We report a revised domain architecture model of Treslin/TICRR. Protein sequence analyses uncovered a conserved Ku70-homologous ÎČ-barrel fold in the Treslin/TICRR middle domain (M domain) and in Sld3. Thus, the Sld3-homologous Treslin/TICRR core comprises its three central domains, M domain, Sld3-Treslin domain, and TopBP1/Dpb11 interaction domain, flanked by non-conserved terminal domains, the CIT (conserved in Treslins) and the C terminus. The CIT includes a von Willebrand factor type A domain. Unexpectedly, MTBP, Treslin/TICRR, and Ku70/80 share the same N-terminal domain architecture, von Willebrand factor type A and Ku70-like ÎČ-barrels, suggesting a common ancestry. Binding experiments using mutants and the Sld3–Sld7 dimer structure suggest that the Treslin/Sld3 and MTBP/Sld7 ÎČ-barrels engage in homotypic interactions, reminiscent of Ku70-Ku80 dimerization. Cells expressing Treslin/TICRR domain mutants indicate that all Sld3-core domains and the non-conserved terminal domains fulfil important functions during origin firing in human cells.     Crescimento e qualidade da carcaça de suinos Landrace X Large White submetidos a acabamento intensivo até elevado peso de abate

    Ao longo dos Ășltimos anos, em muitos paĂ­ses, e como jĂĄ Ă© habitual em ItĂĄlia, o peso vivo de abate de suĂ­nos tem registado um progressivo aumento, o que tem sido possĂ­vel devido ao melhoramento genĂ©tico de raças industriais, com potencial para produzir mais carne magra. Utilizaram-se 30 suĂ­nos, F1 cruzados de Landrace x Large White, castrados, submetidos a acabamento intensivo com alimento composto (Energia Bruta 3833 kcal / kg MS), distribuĂ­do ad libitum, atĂ© um peso elevado ao abate (90-160 kg de PV). Avaliou-se o desempenho produtivo dos animais, espessura da gordura e profundidade do Longissimus dorsi, in vivo, e peso de carcaça. Os animais foram pesados semanalmente e a ingestĂŁo de alimento controlada, individual e diariamente, permitindo calcular os GMD e IC. Efetuaram-se diversas mediçÔes, in vivo, da espessura da gordura (P1 - linha mĂ©dia da Ășltima vertebra torĂĄcica, P2 - a 6 cm da linha mĂ©dia ao nĂ­vel da Ășltima vertebra torĂĄcica e P3 - linha mĂ©dia da Ășltima vertebra lombar) e da profundidade do Longissimus dorsi, por ultra-sonografia, aos 90, 120 e 160 kg PV. Os animais foram abatidos em matadouro experimental, registando-se o peso de carcaça, a quente e a frio (24 h post mortem), bem como o total das gorduras rejeitadas e miudezas. Os GMD dos animais foram de 828,3 ± 110,3 g e de 673,1 ± 112,2 g, nos perĂ­odos 90-120 kg e 120- 160 kg, respetivamente, o que representa um decrĂ©scimo de 19% do GMD, entre os perĂ­odos considerados. Nos mesmos perĂ­odos, os IC foram de 4,27 ± 0,32 e de 4,99 ± 0,49, representando um incremento de 17%. O consumo mĂ©dio de alimento foi de 3,34 kg / dia. Para as trĂȘs mediçÔes de espessura da gordura efetuadas e da profundidade do Longissimus dorsi, registou-se um crescimento constante ao longo do ensaio, no total de 1,1 cm, e de 1,2 cm, respetivamente. Observou-se apenas uma diferenciação do crescimento do P2, menos acentuado entre os 90 e os 120 kg, mas recuperando, no perĂ­odo 120-160 Kg. Os pesos mĂ©dios da carcaça, a quente e a frio, foram respectivamente 132,1 Kg e 130 kg, representando 82,4% e 81% do peso vivo ao abate. Obteve-se um peso mĂ©dio da perna (com chispe) de 19 kg.     Effects of different slipping methods on the mortality of sardine, Sardina pilchardus, after purse-seine capture off the Portuguese Southern coast (Algarve)

    The effects of two different slipping methods on the survival, physical and physiological response of sardines, Sardina pilchardus, captured in a purse-seine fishery were investigated in southern Portugal. Sardines were collected and transferred into holding tanks onboard a commercial fishing vessel after being captured, crowded and deliberately released using two slipping procedures: standard and modified. The standard slipping procedure aggregated fish at high densities and made them "roll over" the floatline, while the modified procedure aggregated the fish at moderate densities and enabled them to escape through an opening created by adding weights to the floatline. Both slipping methods were compared with minimally harmed non-slipped sardines (sardines collected from the loose pocket of the purse seine). Survival rates were monitored in captivity over 28 days using three replicates for each treatment. The estimated survival of sardines was 43.6% for the non-slipped fish, 44.7% for the modified slipping and 11.7% for the standard slipping treatments. Scale loss indicated the level of physical impact experienced, with dead fish from the non-slipped and modified slipping technique showing significantly lower scale loss than those fish from the standard slipping treatment within the same period. Of the physiological indicators of stress measured, cortisol, glucose, lactate and osmolality attained peak values during slipping and up to the first hours after introduction to captivity. This work indicates that although delayed mortality after release may be substantial, appropriately modified slipping techniques significantly enhance survival of slipped sardines.FCT [SFRH/BPD/116307/2016]; European Commission's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme [634495

    Developing situation-aware applications for disaster management with a distributed rule-based platform

    In order to enhance interoperability and productivity in the develop-ment of situation-aware applications for disaster management, proper mecha-nisms and guidelines are required. They must address the lack of semantics in modelling emergency situations. In addition, the ever changing and unpredicta-ble nature of disaster scenarios present challenges for information processing and collaboration. This paper proposes a framework that combines the follow-ing elements: (i) a foundational ontology for temporal conceptualization; (ii) well-founded specifications of structural and behavioral models; (iii) a CEP en-gine based on a distributed rule-based platform for situation management; (iv) a model-driven approach. We illustrate the operation of the framework with a scenario for monitoring tuberculosis epidemy

    Study on the technological and economic viability of introducing energy storage systems with solar photovoltaic panels

    Solar photovoltaic represent one of the most promising technologies for generating electrical energy from renewable sources. In fact, as a result of the technological advances in the field of microelectronics and power electronics, photovoltaic systems have reached historic lows in terms of costs, surpassing the other types of renewable energy sources. The potential of the solar photovoltaic systems is enormous, being capable of meeting the energy needs of today, without compromising future needs, and allowing a sustainable development. With this in mind, several incentives and, consequently, legislations have been implemented around the world. In the Portuguese case, depending on the type of contract, for photovoltaic solar installations with value of power up to 1500 Wp the production surplus is injected into the power grid without any financial compensation. Considering the high investment, particularly regarding the photovoltaic panels, the support structure and the power electronics converters, it could be interesting to implement a system capable of storing the surplus energy for later use by the owner of the photovoltaic installation. This paper presents a study on the viability of energy storage systems in photovoltaic installations up to 1500 Wp.     A new cosmological tracker solution for Quintessence

    In this paper we propose a quintessence model with the potential V(Ί)=Vo[sinh⁥(αÎșoΔΩ)]ÎČV(\Phi )=V_{o}[ \sinh {(\alpha \sqrt{\kappa_{o}}\Delta \Phi})] ^{\beta}, which asymptotic behavior corresponds to an inverse power-law potential at early times and to an exponential one at late times. We demonstrate that this is a tracker solution and that it could have driven the Universe into its current inflationary stage. The exact solutions and the description for a complete evolution of the Universe are also given.
