Time-Aware Datasets are Adaptive Knowledgebases for the New Normal

Recent advances in text classification and knowledge capture in language models have relied on availability of large-scale text datasets. However, language models are trained on static snapshots of knowledge and are limited when that knowledge evolves. This is especially critical for misinformation detection, where new types of misinformation continuously appear, replacing old campaigns. We propose time-aware misinformation datasets to capture time-critical phenomena. In this paper, we first present evidence of evolving misinformation and show that incorporating even simple time-awareness significantly improves classifier accuracy. Second, we present COVID-TAD, a large-scale COVID-19 misinformation da-taset spanning 25 months. It is the first large-scale misinformation dataset that contains multiple snapshots of a datastream and is orders of magnitude bigger than related misinformation datasets. We describe the collection and labeling pro-cess, as well as preliminary experiments

Forestry industry macroeconomic assessments typically concentrate on the production, harvesting, and earliest processing of wood products, underestimating the full range of forests impacts in regional economies. This work proposes a broader concept – “forestry products value chain”– that ponders the contribution of the downstream activities relying (directly and indirectly) on Silviculture and Forestry products. The paper adopts a methodology based on a Multi-Regional Input-Output framework. We apply this approach to the Portuguese economy. Results clarify the role of eucalyptus in “Pulp”, “Paper and Cardboard” and “Paper and Cardboard Articles”. Finally, the projected wider macroeconomic consequences from a reduction of these productions is evaluated

Breakdown of universality in three-dimensional Dirac semimetals with random impurities

Dirac-Weyl semimetals are unique three-dimensional (3D) phases of matter with gapless electrons and novel electrodynamic properties believed to be robust against weak perturbations. Here, we unveil the crucial influence of the disorder statistics and impurity diversity in the stability of incompressible electrons in 3D semimetals. Focusing on the critical role played by rare impurity configurations, we show that the abundance of low-energy resonances in the presence of diluted random potential wells endows rare localized zero-energy modes with statistical significance, thus lifting the nodal density of states. The strong nonperturbative effect here reported converts the 3D Dirac-Weyl semimetal into a compressible metal even at the lowest impurity densities. Our analytical results are validated by high-resolution real-space simulations in record-large 3D lattices with up to 536 000 000 orbitals

Investigation of Galactic open cluster remnants: The case of NGC 7193

Galactic open clusters (OCs) that survive the early gas-expulsion phase are gradually destroyed over time by the action of disruptive dynamical processes. Their final evolutionary stages are characterized by a poorly populated concentration of stars called an open cluster remnant (OCR). This study is devoted to assessing the real physical nature of the OCR candidate NGC 7193. GMOS/Gemini spectroscopy of 53 stars in the inner target region were obtained to derive radial velocities and atmospheric parameters. We also employed photometric and proper motion data. The analysis method consists of the following steps: (i) analysis of the statistical resemblance between the cluster and a set of field samples with respect to the sequences defined in color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs); (ii) a 5-dimensional iterative exclusion routine was employed to identify outliers from kinematical and positional data; (iii) isochrone fitting to the Ks × (J-Ks) CMD of the remaining stars and the dispersion of spectral types along empirical sequences in the (J-H) × (H-Ks)diagram were checked. A group of stars was identified for which the mean heliocentric distance is compatible with that obtained via isochrone fitting and whose metallicities are compatible with each other. Fifteen of the member stars observed spectroscopically were identified together with another 19 probable members. Our results indicate that NGC 7193 is a genuine OCR, of a once very populous OC, for which the following parameters were derived: d = 501±46 pc, t = 2.5±1.2Gyr, 〈[Fe/H]〉 = -0.17±0.23 and E(B-V) = 0.05±0.05. Its luminosity and mass functions show depletion of low mass stars, confirming the OCR is in a dynamically evolved state.Fil: de Souza Angelo, Mateus.
