Multiparameter ergodic Cesàro-α averages
Let (X,F,ν) be a σ-finite measure space. Associated with k Lamperti operators on Lp(ν), T1,…,Tk, nˉ=(n1,…,nk)∈Nk and αˉ=(α1,…,αk) with 0<αj≤1, we define the ergodic Cesàro-αˉ averages
Rnˉ,αˉf=1∏kj=1Aαjnj∑ik=0nk⋯∑i1=0n1∏j=1kAαj−1nj−ijTikk⋯Ti11f.
For these averages we prove the almost everywhere convergence on X and the convergence in the Lp(ν) norm, when n1,…,nk→∞ independently, for all f∈Lp(dν) with p>1/α∗ where α∗=min1≤j≤kαj. In the limit case p=1/α∗, we prove that the averages Rnˉ,αˉf converge almost everywhere on X for all f in the Orlicz–Lorentz space Λ(1/α∗,φm−1) with φm(t)=t(1+log+t)m. To obtain the result in the limit case we need to study inequalities for the composition of operators Ti that are of restricted weak type (pi,pi). As another application of these inequalities we also study the strong Cesàro-αˉ continuity of functions.Fil: Bernardis, Ana Lucia.
Targeting pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) with monoclonal antibodies in migraine prevention: a brief review
Introduction
Interest is growing in the role of pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) and its specific PAC1 receptor in migraine and in their antagonism as a strategy for migraine prevention.
Areas covered
We discuss and critically evaluate (i) the evidence of the role of PACAP in migraine pathophysiology and (ii) the first clinical trials in migraine prophylaxis with monoclonal antibodies AMG 301 and ALD1910 which act against PAC1 and PACAP38 respectively. We examined PubMed, Scopus, and ClinicalTrials.gov electronic databases to examine the relevant material.
Expert opinion
There is much proof of the ability of PACAP to cause migraine, but there is limited evidence that blocking PACAP or PAC1 receptor can prevent migraine. However, the potential of anti-PACAP antibodies in migraine prophylaxis is high. Theoretically, if these antibodies block the activation of the trigeminovascular system, they will prevent the onset of migraine attacks. There are still knowledge gaps in the role of PACAP in migraine and the risk/benefit ratio of anti-PACAP antibodies must be carefully studied
Effect of extreme temperature on egg development, larval and adult survival of Chordodes nobilii Camerano, 1901 (Gordiida, Nematomorpha)
On the basis of experimental studies we analyzed the effect of extreme temperatures on the aquatic free-living phases of the life cycle of Chordodes nobilii (Gordiida, Nematomorpha). Bioassays were performed with eggs, larvae, and adults. Eggs and larvae were exposed to 3°C below zero and 40.5°C; adults were exposed to 3°C below zero and to 38.5°C and 40.5°C. The results showed that egg development was inhibited in both tests. Exposed larvae showed a decrease in their infective capacity, which resulted almost null at 40.5°C. Adults exposed to 38.5°C showed mortality ≤10%, at 40.5°C the mortality was 100% and the adult's mortality at 3°C below zero was 89%. Results indicate that free living stages of Chordodes nobilii are susceptible to extreme temperatures.
BI as a service: an attempt to understand the leading adoption factors
The research question of this study attempts to identify which are the leading factors for the adoption of a sourcing Software as a Service model for Business Intelligence applications. The objective is to build a model containing enabling factors for the adoption of BI solutions. We seek to expand on the Benlian et al. model which is based on a theoretical framework including axioms from Transaction Cost Theory, Resource Based View, Theory of Planned Behavior. In order to better understand the phenomenon under investigation, we will use also the Organizational Culture Theory. It is a theoretical research in progress
Angiogenesis in Head and Neck Cancer: A Review of the Literature
Angiogenesis is a necessary process for tumor growth, progression and diffusion. In the last years
many efforts have been made to understand the mechanisms necessary to the formation of new
vessels in tumor tissue and how to integrate these findings in the treatment of different type of
cancer. Thanks to these studies there are today many anti-angiogenic drugs with established
activity in cancer and approved in clinical practice.
Head and neck cancer is a common tumor worldwide that often has advanced stage at diagnosis and
poor prognosis. Angiogenesis has a well recognized role in head and neck cancer progression and
resistance to drugs and radiotherapy and many clinical trials has been conducted with antiangiogenic
agents in this disease, even if they often showed limited efficacy.
In this review we summarize the main trials published about angiogenesis in head and neck cancer
with particular attention to factors involved in this process and the available data on the efficacy of
treatment with anti-angiogenic agents in this disease
A staged screening of registered drugs highlights remyelinating drug candidates for clinical trials
There is no treatment for the myelin loss in multiple sclerosis, ultimately resulting in the axonal degeneration that leads to the progressive phase of the disease. We established a multi-tiered platform for the sequential screening of drugs that could be repurposed as remyelinating agents. We screened a library of 2,000 compounds (mainly Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved compounds and natural products) for cellular metabolic activity on mouse oligodendrocyte precursors (OPC), identifying 42 molecules with significant stimulating effects. We then characterized the effects of these compounds on OPC proliferation and differentiation in mouse glial cultures, and on myelination and remyelination in organotypic cultures. Three molecules, edaravone, 5-methyl-7-methoxyisoflavone and lovastatin, gave positive results in all screening tiers. We validated the results by retesting independent stocks of the compounds, analyzing their purity, and performing dose-response curves. To identify the chemical features that may be modified to enhance the compounds' activity, we tested chemical analogs and identified, for edaravone, the functional groups that may be essential for its activity. Among the selected remyelinating candidates, edaravone appears to be of strong interest, also considering that this drug has been approved as a neuroprotective agent for acute ischemic stroke and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in Japan
