On soft/hard handoff for packet data services in cellular CDMA mobiles systems

Benefits of macrodiversity operation for packet data services in third generation mobile systems are not obvious. Retransmission procedures to enhance link performance and higher downlink bandwidth requirements could question macrodiversity usage. This paper describes a simple methodology to compare soft and hard handoff performance in terms of transmission delay for packet data services. Multiple slot allocation for voice/data transmission over PRMA++ applied to FRAMES multiple access mode 1

This paper presents some simulation results of PRMA++ for voice and data transmission over a physical air interface platform defined in the ACTS European project FRAMES. Variations on the statistics of speech sources (activity factor, petition rate) are studied and conclusions are obtained for optimal frame dimensioning. Flow: una perspectiva dicotómica

El ser humano constituye una especie animal maravillosa, y a la vez violenta y malvada. La dualidad de la mente humana como “bondadosa-perversa” es el punto de inicio del trabajo que a continuación se presenta. Para empezar, debe comentarse el motivo personal que me ha llevado a realizar el estudio entre destrucción y bienestar psicológico. El ser humano es fascinante y puede obtener satisfacción mediante la realización de conductas tan importantes como el altruismo, que otorga un sentimiento de comunidad y utilidad a quién lo practica, y que provoca un doble bienestar. En primer lugar, el bienestar provocado por la satisfacción de los miembros de la sociedad que reciben la ayuda; Y en segundo lugar, el propio bienestar hedonista del que realiza la acción de ayuda y que percibe como mediante su buen hacer, otras personas pueden sobrevivir de forma más digna. Sin embargo, ¿es posible que una persona obtenga satisfacción destruyendo a otra? Dicha cuestión es la principal motivación de este trabajo; Analizar las conexiones entre bienestar psicológico y destrucción me parece una oportunidad para penetrar en la parte más oscura y violenta de la mente con la que todos los seres humanos conviven. Resulta muy interesante observar cómo la destrucción de otros puede propinar sentimientos de satisfacción al perpetrador del acto violento, hasta el punto de alcanzar estados de bienestar psicológicos como es el caso del flow. Como se ha dicho al inicio: la condición humana es bondadosa y maquiavélica a la vez, y esa dualidad es precisamente lo que me motiva a estudiarla a través de la teoría del flow de Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi..

Permutation-invariant distance between atomic configurations

We present a permutation-invariant distance between atomic configurations, defined through a functional representation of atomic positions. This distance enables to directly compare different atomic environments with an arbitrary number of particles, without going through a space of reduced dimensionality (i.e. fingerprints) as an intermediate step. Moreover, this distance is naturally invariant through permutations of atoms, avoiding the time consuming associated minimization required by other common criteria (like the Root Mean Square Distance). Finally, the invariance through global rotations is accounted for by a minimization procedure in the space of rotations solved by Monte Carlo simulated annealing. A formal framework is also introduced, showing that the distance we propose verifies the property of a metric on the space of atomic configurations. Two examples of applications are proposed. The first one consists in evaluating faithfulness of some fingerprints (or descriptors), i.e. their capacity to represent the structural information of a configuration. The second application concerns structural analysis, where our distance proves to be efficient in discriminating different local structures and even classifying their degree of similarity

Magnetic properties and domain structure of (Ga,Mn)As films with perpendicular anisotropy

The ferromagnetism of a thin GaMnAs layer with a perpendicular easy anisotropy axis is investigated by means of several techniques, that yield a consistent set of data on the magnetic properties and the domain structure of this diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor. The magnetic layer was grown under tensile strain on a relaxed GaInAs buffer layer using a procedure that limits the density of threading dislocations. Magnetometry, magneto-transport and polar magneto-optical Kerr effect (PMOKE) measurements reveal the high quality of this layer, in particular through its high Curie temperature (130 K) and well-defined magnetic anisotropy. We show that magnetization reversal is initiated from a limited number of nucleation centers and develops by easy domain wall propagation. Furthermore, MOKE microscopy allowed us to characterize in detail the magnetic domain structure. In particular we show that domain shape and wall motion are very sensitive to some defects, which prevents a periodic arrangement of the domains. We ascribed these defects to threading dislocations emerging in the magnetic layer, inherent to the growth mode on a relaxed buffer

[Resumen] En esta comunicación se pone de manifiesto, a través del análisis de 16 perfiles de suelos, la regeneración edáfica que se ha producido en el Parque Natural de lo Montes de Málaga como consecuencia del abandono de las prácticas de cultivo y de la reforestación.
