In this study, I examine the agon scene in Euripides' Alcestis. The agon is placed in the 4th episode, when Alcestis' corpse has recieved all preparations for the funeral, and Admeto has already accomodated Heracles in the palace, without telling him, however, about the last occurrences. This episode is the biggest of the play with 360 verses, what could cause the prolongation of the action and consequently the decline of the emotional tonus. Nevertheless, Euripides has composed this episode with very diversified elements, that it could be divided in scenes, what confers certain agitily to the events succession that accelerates the end of the play. I took as basis the commentaries by A. M. Dale and by L P. E. Parker, and whenever necessary, I have also recurred to the James Diggle?s and D. J Conacher?s editions. Another important text for the present discussion of the agon in Alcestis is the book by Michael Lloyd, The Agon in EuripidesNo presente estudo examina-se a cena de agón na Alceste de Eurípides.

The Concept of Revolution: An Emergency

Revolution is not a finished concept It has a specific history and has mobilized great discussions over the centuries classical antiquity there has been debate about the best Constitution and the form of citizens However the term is potentially away from its original political conceptions that relates the word to its social ties so crucial in the theoretical structuring in the field of human sciences in addition to the mobilizations and experiences of individuals and societies Linked more to technological innovations or advertising campaigns revolution is increasingly distant from the meanings that monopolized investigations into the term in modernity After 18th century interpretations have been divided into two main branches one related to the liberal revolutions American 1776 and French 1789 the other attached to the Marxist tradition and the Russian process 1917 1 Perhaps as Trist n and Barros said Castro s death in 2016 it was a biological end of events and ideologies that marked the History of the last great political and social revolutions of recent centuries without which no other could be thought and articulated

Time Between Spaces: The Black Atlantic and the Recent Historiography of Slavery in Brazil

    Get PDF
This dissertation advances the sketch of a metaphorical model of long-term Historical time based on the idea of fractal spatiality as outlined by Paul Gilroy in his Black Atlantic – Modernity and Double Consciousness (1993). This task is carried out by combining aesthetics and analytical philosophy of History with post-colonial theory so as to perform a semantic exploration of the disciplinary vocabulary of History understood as social science. An exploration that, stemming from a reflection upon colonial slavery unfolded in the form of a review of the recent Brazilian historiographical production about the issue, deploys discursive strategies and analytical tools—such as diasporic time, Synchronisierung, rethoricity, etc.—that express a distinctive concern with an interpellation of the (excesses) of Eurocentrism, which is here depicted with an accent in its phallogocentric and racist axis. What results from this analysis is presented in the conclusion (Time Between Spaces: fractal spatiality and long-term Historical time), a theoretical effort that, by assuming the semblance of a mirrored dialogue with Fernand Braudel’s longue durée, spells out its own political-epistemological consequences and faces thus its limits
