    Waste and Recycled Textiles as Reinforcements of Building Materials

    Currently, the use of composite materials in the construction areas has had a great impact on the society; mainly, those related with sustainability and environment aspects. Daily proposals aimed at overcoming the properties of traditional materials that arise, which include emergent materials either from waste or recycled products. One of them is related to the textile materials, which include fibers such as wool, hemp, linen, and cotton. In the past decade, special attention has been focused on the used clothes, which represent a source of raw materials environmentally responsible and economically profitable. Textile materials are discarded daily around the world, representing approximately 1.5% of the generated waste. Blue jeans are the most used clothing in the world, and they are elaborated by one of the most commonly used natural textile fibers—cotton. Textile materials have been reused in different applications, for example, in the production of poor-quality wires, crushed to manufacture noise and temperature insulation materials, and as fillers or reinforcements of concrete. In this chapter, different topics are described that include: (a) environmental impact of textile waste—a result of massive consumption of clothing, (b) recycling and reuse of textile waste, and (c) waste and recycled textile materials used as building materials

    Recovery of cotton fibers from waste Blue-Jeans and its use in polyester concrete

    Se estudia el efecto de agregar fibras de algodón, provenientes de pantalones de mezclilla de desecho, en concreto polimérico elaborado con resina poliéster.Currently, the consumer tendency causes that the garments are dismissed more quickly, which generate increment of textile waste, such as Blue-Jeans. In this work, polyester concrete with waste cotton fibers was elaborated, and a novel treatment by gamma irradiation was carried out. The results show up to 40% improvement on the compressive strength, as well as 7% on the flexural strength. Additional improvements for irradiated concrete were obtained, when 300 kGy of irradiation dose was applied. Modifications on the surface, chemical structural and crystallinity of irradiated waste cotton fibers, were related with improvements on the mechanical properties of concrete

    Multifunctional T cell response to DosR and Rpf antigens is associated with protection in long-Term mycobacterium tuberculosis-infected individuals in Colombia

    ABSTARCT: Multifunctional T cells have been shown to be protective in chronic viral infections. In mycobacterial infections, however, evidence for a protective role of multifunctional T cells remains inconclusive. Short-term cultures of peripheral blood mononuclear cells stimulated with the Mycobacterium tuberculosis RD1 antigens 6-kDa early secretory antigenic target (ESAT6) and 10-kDa culture filtrate antigen (CFP10), which are induced in the early infection phase, have been mainly used to assess T cell multifunctionality, although long-term culture assays have been proposed to be more sensitive than short-term assays for assessment of memory T cells, which are essential for long-term immunity. Here we used a long-term culture assay system to study the T cell immune responses to the M. tuberculosis latency-associated DosR antigens and reactivation-associated Rpf antigens, compared to ESAT6 and CFP10, in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and household contacts of PTB patients with long-term latent tuberculosis infection (ltLTBI), in a community in which M. tuberculosis is endemic. Our results showed that the DosR antigens Rv1737c (narK2) and Rv2029c (pfkB) and the Rv2389c (rpfD) antigen of M. tuberculosis induced higher frequencies of CD4+ or CD8+ mono- or bifunctional (but not multifunctional) T cells producing interferon gamma (IFN-γ) and/or tumor necrosis alpha (TNF-α) in ltLTBI, compared to PTB. Moreover, the frequencies of CD4+ and/or CD8+ T cells with a CD45RO+ CD27+ phenotype were higher in ltLTBI than in PTB. Thus, the immune responses to selected DosR and Rpf antigens may be associated with long-term latency, correlating with protection from M. tuberculosis reactivation in ltLTBI. Further study of the functional and memory phenotypes may contribute to further discrimination between the different states of M. tuberculosis infections

    Desarrollo de tres fórmulas de embutido escaldado a base de carne de conejo y su efecto en su composición nutricional y características organolépticas

    Con el objetivo de evaluar tres fórmulas de embutido escaldado mediante variaciones de 55, 50 y 45% de carne de conejo para la elaboración de una salchicha y su efecto en la percepción sensorial, se llevó a cabo una investigación en la Estación Experimental y de Prácticas, de la Facultad de Ciencias Agronómicas, Universidad de El Salvador, Cantón Tecualuya, Municipio de San Luis Talpa, Departamento de La Paz, con un período de 52 semanas el cual inició en el mes de octubre de 2018 y finalizó en el mes de octubre de 2019, donde se evaluaron tres fórmulas de embutido escaldado a base de carne de conejo y un testigo a base de carne de pollo, donde se determinó su efecto en las características organolépticas. Para determinar el grado de aceptación se realizó una prueba de evaluación sensorial, utilizando una prueba de satisfacción en cada uno de los tratamientos; la evaluación sensorial se llevó a cabo en el Centro Histórico de San Salvador (enfocada directamente al consumidor final) se desarrolló con 80 personas de entre 15 – 60 años de edad como panel de jueces, para la toma de datos se utilizó una escala hedónica de nueve puntos, el análisis de datos se realizó mediante el software Infostat, programa de análisis estadístico. Se realizó la prueba de Kruskal Wallis, que es una prueba no paramétrica que analiza medianas, determinando así diferencias significativas con la variable sabor, no así para las variables color, olor y textura las cuales no mostraron diferencias significativas de acuerdo al análisis estadístico. La investigación tuvo una base económica que determino la relación del beneficio/costo donde se analizó la factibilidad del estudio en términos económicos, para ello se realizó una estimación de los costos de producción de una libra de carne de conejo, mediante la valorización del precio de la canal de conejo en el mercado y su comparación con la de pollo. Además, cada tratamiento se analizó utilizando percentiles, para determinar cual tuvo mayor grado de aceptación según las variables. Se desarrolló un análisis bromatológico para identificar el aporte nutricional de cada uno de los tratamientos, donde se tomó una muestra significativa para determinar proteína bajo el método de Kjeldahl, determinación de grasa cruda y determinación de carbohidratos totales. Al final se compararon los resultados determinando que el tratamiento 2 presento mejores características nutricionales, de igual forma se determinó que el tratamiento 1 presenta los costos de elaboración más bajos, aunque comparándolo con los demás tratamientos esta diferencia no es significativa lo cual muestra la conclusión que el tratamiento que presenta más aceptabilidad y costos de elaboración bajos es el tratamiento 2. Nutricionalmente se concluye que la carne de conejo es la que aporta mejores beneficios a la salud del consumidor, siendo el tratamiento 2 (50% de carne de conejo) el que expresa mejores aportes nutricionales en su fórmula; por otro lado, el que presenta menor aporte nutricional es el tratamiento testigo (tratamiento 0 con 55% de carne de pollo).De acuerdo con los resultados obtenidos al analizar la variable sabor para los tratamientos, se pudo concluir que los tratamientos que contenían más carne son los que presentaron puntajes más altos (55% carne de pollo y 55% carne de conejo

    Economic Consequences of The COVID 19 Pandemic on Agronomy Engineering Students at Tecnm-Roque, Cycle 2022

    La pandemia que sacudió al mundo, tuvo muchas consecuencias, y el ámbito académico no quedó exento, esta situación además de afectar el núcleo familiar, se manifestó de manera directa en el sistema educativo, incluyendo a todos los actores de este sector que van desde: el alumno, maestro, unidad directiva e incluso instalaciones. El Tecnológico Nacional de México en Roque (TECNM de Roque), cuenta con diferentes carreras de nivel superior. La Ingeniería en Agronomía es la carrera con mayor demanda, reflejando así, un ingreso ininterrumpido semestralmente, participando con una matrícula de 550 estudiantes repartidos en 9 semestres. Este estudio consideró a 136 encuestados, repartidos entre alumnos del tercer y quinto semestre, representando un 24.70% del total de la matricula. Los alumnos inscritos en la carrera de agronomía en su mayoría son alumnos de clase media, media baja y baja, donde el recurso económico regularmente representa el factor detonante en el indicador de deserción escolar. Así mismo, este estudio considera 13 ítems, los cuales se les aplicó a alumnos de semestres intermedios, considerados como “estudiantes adaptados al sistema profesional”. Estos alumnos en promedio cursan de 6 a 7 materias por semestre, en turno matutino o vespertino, la mayoría de los alumnos toman en promedio dos vehículos de transporte público para llegar a las instalaciones del TecNM en Roque. Así mismo, el estudio también busca tener elementos para entender los gastos que realizan comúnmente los estudiantes, su afectación que causan, con la finalidad de buscar apoyos en cuestiones académicas que pudieran estar al alcance del docente, atención psicológica y de la unidad directiva de la institución. Las afectaciones con mayor repercusión en el proceso enseñanza- aprendizaje son: el aprendizaje, la salud y la economía, por tal motivo, la relevancia de este estudio, es tratar de obtener elementos para la toma de decisiones. El SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) cambió las estructuras de vida, estas condiciones se vieron afectadas en el aspecto económico, desde despidos del principal proveedor del recurso económico, llámese el padre o tutor, además, han orillado a que el estudiante tenga la necesidad imperante de incluirse en el ámbito laboral para poder cubrir los gastos que demandan sus estudios.The pandemic that shook the world had many consequences, and the academic field was not exempt. This situation, in addition to affecting the family unit, manifested itself directly in the educational system, including all the actors in this sector ranging from: the student, teacher, management unit and even facilities. The National Technology of Mexico in Roque (TECNM de Roque), has different higher level careers. Agronomy Engineering is the career with the highest demand, thus reflecting an uninterrupted semester of admission, participating with an enrollment of 550 students spread over 9 semesters. This study considered 136 respondents, distributed among students from the third and fifth semester, representing 24.70% of the total enrollment. The students enrolled in the agronomy degree are mostly middle, lower middle and lower class students, where economic resources regularly represent the triggering factor in the school dropout indicator. Likewise, this study considers 13 items, which were applied to students in intermediate semesters, considered as “students adapted to the professional system.” These students, on average, take 6 to 7 subjects per semester, in the morning or afternoon shift. Most students take an average of two public transportation vehicles to get to the TecNM facilities in Roque. Likewise, the study also seeks to have elements to understand the expenses commonly incurred by students, the impact they cause, in order to seek support on academic issues that could be within the reach of the teacher, psychological care and the management unit of the school. institution. The effects with the greatest impact on the teaching-learning process are: learning, health and the economy, for this reason, the relevance of this study is to try to obtain elements for decision making. Do these approaches and data sources deliver complementary land-cover/vegetation maps? Objective: The present article documents a joint phytosociological and geographical approach to improve vegetation cartography in temperate-tropical transitional ecosystems. Location: The research was conducted at national (Mexico) and state (Michoacán) scales. Mexico and Michoacán have been recognized as regions of high ecogeographical complexity, where temperate-tropical conditions intermingle, creating large eco-socio-cultural mosaics. Conclusions: We discuss the scientific challenge of transitioning from land cover into vegetation maps and (dis)similarities of approaches reviewing concepts and analytical (quanti)qualitative instruments. The paper contrasts the present output with the experiences of other countries such as Canada, the United States, Bolivia, and Colombia. Finally, the results are discussed in light of their relevance for constructing public environmental policies, such as land use planning, establishment of protected areas, allocation of incentives for sustainable environmental services, and long-term conservation practices

    Pathogenicity island cag, vacA and IS605 genotypes in Mexican strains of Helicobacter pylori associated with peptic ulcers

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Helicobacter pylori </it>is associated with chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, and gastric cancer. Two major virulence factors of <it>H. pylori </it>have been described: the pathogenicity island <it>cag </it>(<it>cag </it>PAI) and the vacuolating cytotoxin gene (<it>vacA</it>). Virtually all strains have a copy of <it>vacA</it>, but its genotype varies. The <it>cag </it>PAI is a region of 32 genes in which the insertion of IS<it>605 </it>elements in its middle region has been associated with partial or total deletions of it that have generated strains with varying virulence. Accordingly, the aim of this work was to determine the <it>cag </it>PAI integrity<it>, vacA </it>genotype and IS<it>605 </it>status in groups of isolates from Mexican patients with non-peptic ulcers (NPU), non-bleeding peptic ulcers (NBPU), and bleeding peptic ulcers (BPU).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The <it>cag </it>PAI integrity was performed by detection of eleven targeted genes along this locus using dot blot hybridization and PCR assays. The <it>vacA </it>allelic, <it>cag </it>PAI genotype 1 and IS<it>605 </it>status were determined by PCR analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Groups of 16-17 isolates (n = 50) from two patients with NPU, NBPU, and BPU, respectively, were studied. 90% (45/50) of the isolates harbored a complete <it>cag </it>PAI. Three BPU isolates lacked the <it>cag </it>PAI, and two of the NBPU had an incomplete <it>cag </it>PAI: the first isolate was negative for three of its genes, including deletion of the <it>cagA </it>gene, whereas the second did not have the <it>cagM </it>gene. Most of the strains (76%) had the <it>vacA </it>s1b/m1 genotype; meanwhile the IS<it>605 </it>was not present within the <it>cag </it>PAI of any strain but was detected elsewhere in the genome of 8% (4/50).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The patients had highly virulent strains since the most of them possessed a complete <it>cag </it>PAI and had a <it>vacA </it>s1b/m1 genotype. All the isolates presented the <it>cag </it>PAI without any IS<it>605 </it>insertion (genotype 1). Combined <it>vacA </it>genotypes showed that 1 NPU, 2 NBPU, and 1 BPU patients (66.6%) had a mixed infection; coexistence of <it>H. pylori </it>strains with different <it>cag </it>PAI status was observed in 1 NBPU and 2 BPU (50%) of the patients, but only two of these patients (NBPU and BPU) had different <it>vacA </it>genotypes.</p

    Treatment of maxillary transverse deficiency with rapid expansion of the palate with mini-implant: a review

    One of the most prevalent malocclusions is maxillary constriction, which is a narrowing of the upper arch; its etiology is multifactorial, including mainly genetic factors and parafunctional habits. It is characterized by a posterior crossbite that can be unilateral or bilateral, total or partial, and may even not occur in cases with simultaneous constriction of the mandibular arch. Transverse deficiency or maxillary hypoplasia affects facial growth and the integrity of the dentoalveolar structures. Therefore, it must be corrected as soon as it is diagnosed. As the maxilla widens, the midpalatal suture and the intermaxillary suture expand. When they are not fused, it is connective tissue and behaves viscoelastically in response to externally applied forces.
