    Simple Impurity Embedded in a Spherical Jellium: Approximations of Density Functional Theory compared to Quantum Monte Carlo Benchmarks

    We study the electronic structure of a spherical jellium in the presence of a central Gaussian impurity. We test how well the resulting inhomogeneity effects beyond spherical jellium are reproduced by several approximations of density functional theory (DFT). Four rungs of Perdew's ladder of DFT functionals, namely local density approximation (LDA), generalized gradient approximation (GGA), meta-GGA and orbital-dependent hybrid functionals are compared against our quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) benchmarks. We identify several distinct transitions in the ground state of the system as the electronic occupation changes between delocalized and localized states. We examine the parameter space of realistic densities (1≤rs≤51 \le r_s\le 5) and moderate depths of the Gaussian impurity (Z<7Z<7). The selected 18 electron system (with closed-shell ground state) presents 1d→2s1d \to 2s transitions while the 30 electron system (with open-shell ground state) exhibits 1f→2p1f \to 2p transitions. For the former system, the accuracy for the transitions is clearly improving with increasing sophistication of functionals with meta-GGA and hybrid functionals having only small deviations from QMC. However, for the latter system, we find much larger differences for the underlying transitions between our pool of DFT functionals and QMC. We attribute this failure to treatment of the exact exchange within these functionals.     Spectrum of Eleven-dimensional Supergravity on a PP-wave Background

    We calculate the spectrum of the linearized supergravity around the maximally supersymmetric pp-wave background in eleven dimensions. The resulting spectrum agrees with that of zero-mode Hamiltonian of a supermembrane theory on the pp-wave background.     Tactile Sensors Based on Conductive Polymers

    This paper presents results from a selection of tactile sensors that have been designed and fabricated. These sensors are based on a common approach that consists in placing a sheet of piezoresistive material on the top of a set of electrodes. We use a thin film of conductive polymer as the piezoresistive mate¬rial. Specifically, a conductive water-based ink of this polymer is deposited by spin coating on a flexible plastic sheet, giving it a smooth, homogeneous and conducting thin film. The main interest in this procedure is that it is cheap and it allows the fabrication of flexible and low cost tactile sensors. In this work we present results from sensors made using two technologies. Firstly, we have used a flexible Printed Circuit Board (PCB) technology to fabricate the set of electrodes and addressing tracks. The result is a simple, flexible tactile sensor. In addition to these sensors on PCB, we have proposed, designed and fabricated sensors with screen printing technology. In this case, the set of electrodes and addressing tracks are made by printing an ink based on silver nanoparticles. The intense characterization provides us insights into the design of these tactile sensors.This work has been partially funded by the spanish government under contract TEC2006-12376-C02

    Compressed-domain shot boundary detection for H.264/AVC using intra partitioning maps

    In this paper, a novel technique for shot boundary detection operating on H.264/AVC-compressed sequences is presented. Due to new and improved coding tools in H.264/AVC, the characteristics of the obtained sequences differ from former video coding standards. Although several algorithms working on this new standard are already proposed, the presence of IDR frames can still lead to a low accuracy for abrupt transitions. To solve this issue, we present the motion-compensated intra partitioning map which relies on the intra partitioning modes and the motion vectors present in the compressed video stream. Experimental results show that this motion-compensated map achieves a high accuracy and exceeds related work

    Direct Minimization Generating Electronic States with Proper Occupation Numbers

    We carry out the direct minimization of the energy functional proposed by Mauri, Galli and Car to derive the correct self-consistent ground state with fractional occupation numbers for a system degenerating at the Fermi level. As a consequence, this approach enables us to determine the electronic structure of metallic systems to a high degree of accuracy without the aid of level broadening of the Fermi-distribution function. The efficiency of the method is illustrated by calculating the ground-state energy of C2_2 and Si2_2 molecules and the W(110) surface to which a tungsten adatom is adsorbed.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Confusing the extragalactic neutrino flux limit with a neutrino propagation limit

    We study the possible suppression of the extragalactic neutrino flux due to a nonstandard interaction during its propagation. In particular, we study neutrino interaction with an ultra-light scalar field dark matter. It is shown that the extragalactic neutrino flux may be suppressed by such an interaction, leading to a new mechanism to reduce the ultra-high energy neutrino flux. We study both the cases of non-self-conjugate as well as self-conjugate dark matter. In the first case, the suppression is independent of the neutrino and dark matter masses. We conclude that care must be taken when explaining limits on the neutrino flux through source acceleration mechanisms only, since there could be other mechanisms for the reduction of the neutrino flux.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures.
