Drilling predation traces on recent limpets from northern Patagonia, Argentina
In this study we analyze the predator-prey relationship between muricid gastropods (mainly Trophon geversianus) and the limpets Nacella magellanica, Fissurella radiosa, Diodora patagonica and Siphonaria lessoni from recent mollusk death assemblages at Puerto Lobos (41°59’54.2’’ S), on the Atlantic coast of northern Patagonia. The majority of the drill holes fit the ichnospecies Oichnus simplex Bromley, 1981. In five cases the holes resemble Oichnus ovalis Bromley (1983), attributable to octopuses. In analyses of O. simplex, the drilling frequency of the whole mollusk assemblage was 4.72%, which is higher than for N. magellanica (3.97%) and for all limpet specimens together (1.57%). Drillings were site-selective in the apical sector of the shell, with a notable and statistically significant preference for the U-shaped muscle scar. There is also some evidence of selective predation with respect to size, although the pattern is not strong. The low drilling frequencies on limpets compared to mussels coincide with the general idea that muricid gastropods have a strong preference for sessile prey, due to their inability to handle mobile items. The quantitative incidence of drilling predation on limpets varies considerably between published examples and within the different species of prey studied. The absence of records of drilling predation on fossil limpets remains partially unexplained, except for the fact that limpets are rarely preserved in the fossil record, thus reducing the probability of finding drilled specimens, plus the low frequency in which muricids choose limpet prey for drilling. This is the first study in South America centered on this biotic interaction.Fil: Archuby, Fernando. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Simulation of a solar assisted counterflow tunnel dehydrator
A widely used class of vegetable dehydration systems are the “tunnel-and-truck” dehydrators, where the prepared material lies over horizontal trays stored in trucks which move discontinuously in opposite direction of the air flow. This way the driest product is facing the inlet hot and dry air blowed to the system. When product of one truck is ready, is removed from the tunnel leaving space for advance the remaining truck one place forward. This way, a new truck full of wet product can be inserted at the end of the tunnel. The hermal energy required for the process can be supplied by several sources including gas, biomass, solar energy or a combination of them. Solar energy is for free but reaches the
Earth with quite a low flux and a strongly fluctuating rate. This imposes the need of special designs and control strategies. This paper presents a study based on simulation models of the dehydrator and the solar thermal system. The dehydrator simulation model is tuned to match experimental data from a particular prototype based on fossil fuel. A solar system simulation model is then applied to the analysis of different design options.
The specific heat at constant pressure (Cp) is a necessary thermal parameter in the description of the heat transport in a material, related to the adaptation to changes of temperature, which is very important in the valuation and inspection of inputs for the construction, adhesives, insulators thermal and electronic devices. In this work, a thermal relaxation system with infrared thermometry was used to determine the Cp of green coffee beans, measuring the temperature of the material placed inside a vacuum chamber that reaches a pressure of 10-2 Torr. The sample was heated by radiation with laser light and the data was obtained by means of an acquisition card. The calibration of the system was made comparing the values obtained of Cp of Zinc, Tungsten, Titanium and Steel sheets with those reported and similarity was found. This method was used to measure the Cp of samples of organic and conventional coffee; these values were subjected to an analysis of variance and significant differences were found with a confidence level of 95 %. This technique could be used for the discrimination of organic coffee in the certification process.
Preservice elementary teacher´s thinking about algebraic reasoning
ABSTARCT: His paper reports on the results of a research about the comprehension of elementary algebraic reasoning exhibited by preservice elementary teachers. Such comprehension is studied by means of the elementary algebraic tasks that preservice teachers propose to be worked out by primary pupils, as well as their conceptions about including elementary algebraic reasoning in primary school curriculum. Based on the analysis of the tasks it stands out the procedural and numerical conception exhibited by the preservice teachers. Additionally they conceded little importance to the relational aspect of the equal sign. Some implications for teacher education are discussed
Molluscs in Archaeological Contexts of Atlantic Coast of Tierra del Fuego: Prehistoric Consumption and Implications of Current Distribution
This paper analyzes archaeomalacological data from three archaeological sites –two shell middens and an open air site – located northern Río Grande city, in the Fuegian steppe and dated by the middle and late Holocene. This data is compared with the malacofauna coming from other archaeological sites of northern Tierra del Fuego and with the mollusks living in the region today. Six sampling were done nearby the best known archaeological sites with the aim of checking the present distribution of the species. Some interpretations on distribution and palaeoecology of several mollusk species as well as its potential as economic resource for hunter gatherers of Tierra del Fuego are offered.Fil: Santiago, Fernando Carlos. The antiderivative understanding by students in the first university courses
ABSTARCT: In this article, we present the results of a questionnaire designed to evaluate college students’ understanding of the antiderivative. Specifically, by civil engineering students when answering the questionnaire’ tasks, in order to identify and characterize the meanings on the antiderivative that are mobilized by them. In order to analyse the answers given, we used some theoretical and methodological notions provided by the theoretical model known as the Onto-Semiotic Approach (OSA) of mathematics cognition and instruction. The results show knowledge of antiderivative by the Civil Engineering students. Furthermore, the comparison between the mathematical activity of students provides information that allows concluding that the meanings that they mobilized might be shared among their communities
