    Human perception towards the association between the domestic rock pigeon and the insect vector of Chagas disease in an urban area of Argentina

    This article focuses on identifying risk factors through the knowledge, perceptions, and prevention practices of the population regarding the rock pigeon and the vector of Chagas disease (vinchucas) in an urban area of Argentina. The study used interviews of focal groups, family nuclei with nearby nesting sites and without nearby nesting sites. Among the results, presence of risk factors that contribute to the infestation of vinchucas in houses were identified, such as presence nesting sites of the rock pigeon, and frequency of cleaning the nests and of fumigation. We show that people that kept their houses clean of nests and routinely disinfected their homes had considerably lower probability of finding vinchucas within their houses. We also identify a general lack of knowledge about risk factors of Chagas disease related to the presence of nesting sites in houses, the form of dispersion of the vector and how to act upon encountering a vinchucas. However, respondents who presented nests in their houses associated the encounter of vinchuca with the presence of nesting sites. The respondents showed high levels of support for programs to control the population of the rock pigeon. It is important that the population at risk of contracting Chagas disease can combat this disease through their daily actions. Promoting better knowledge of risk factors would be an important advancement for community compliance and participation in the fight against Chagas disease.Fil: Fernandez Maldonado, Viviana Noemi.     Características del paisaje que influyen en la selección de sitios de nidificación de Columba livia y Patagioenas maculosa en una ciudad de desierto en América del Sur

    Urban centers are dominated by species adapted to human presence. The intensityof human activity has a strong influence on habitat selection by animal populations across land-scapes. The objectives of this study were to assess the abundance and the spatial distribution ofthe nests of two species of pigeons (Columba livia and Patagioenas maculosa), and evaluate theeffects of human factors on the probability of nesting-site selection in different urban zones withina desert city. Nest abundance increased for Columba livia in city centers and for Patagioenas maculosain zones away from them, in green areas. The most important variables influencing the probabilityof nesting-site selection by Columba livia were distance to the main square, distance to food sourcesand the interaction between distance to food sources and distance to water, along with type andheight of buildings. For Patagioenas maculosa, the variables influencing the probability of nesting-site selection were distance to water, human population density, distance to food sources and theinteraction between human population density and distance to food sources, along with treeheight and diameter of tree canopy. This species selected Platanus× hispanica and Morus spp. asnesting sites. Nesting sites could be a limiting factor for these species, and our results haveimportant implications for choosing appropriate control strategies for the management of urbanpigeons in desert environments.Los centros urbanos están dominados por especies adaptadas a la presencia humana. La intensidad de la actividad humana tiene una fuerte influencia sobre la selección del hábitat en poblaciones animales. Los objetivos de este estudio fueron estimar la abundancia y la distribución espacial de los nidos de dos especies de palomas (Columba livia and Patagioenas maculosa) y evaluar los efectos de factores humanos sobre la probabilidad de selección de sitios de nidificación en diferentes zonas en una ciudad de desierto. La abundancia de nidos de Columba livia aumentó en el centro de la ciudad y para Patagioenas maculosa en zonas alejadas del centro, en áreas verdes. Las variables más influyentes en la probabilidad de selección de sitios de nidificación para Columba livia fueron distancia a la plaza principal, distancia a las fuentes de alimento y la interacción entre la distancia a las fuentes de alimento y la distancia al agua, además del tipo y la altura de los edificios. Para Patagioenas maculosa las variables más influyentes en la probabilidad de selección de sitios de nidificación fueron la distancia al agua, la densidad poblacional humana, la distancia a las fuentes de alimento y la interacción entre la densidad poblacional humana y la distancia a las fuentes de alimento, además de la altura del árbol y el diámetro de la copa. Además, esta especie seleccionó Platanus×hispanica y Morus spp. como sitio de nidificación. Los sitios de reproducción podrían ser un factor limitante para estas especies; los resultados de este estudio tienen importantes implicancias para la elección de estrategias apropiadas de control en el manejo de palomas de ambientes urbanos en zonas desérticas.Fil: Fernandez Maldonado, Viviana Noemi.     The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of healthcare workers:study protocol for the COVID-19 HEalth caRe wOrkErS (HEROES) study

    BACKGROUND: Preliminary country-specific reports suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic has a negative impact on the mental health of the healthcare workforce. In this paper, we summarize the protocol of the COVID-19 HEalth caRe wOrkErS (HEROES) study, an ongoing, global initiative, aimed to describe and track longitudinal trajectories of mental health symptoms and disorders among health care workers at different phases of the pandemic across a wide range of countries in Latin America, Europe, Africa, Middle-East, and Asia. METHODS: Participants from various settings, including primary care clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, and mental health facilities, are being enrolled. In 26 countries, we are using a similar study design with harmonized measures to capture data on COVID-19 related exposures and variables of interest during two years of follow-up. Exposures include potential stressors related to working in healthcare during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as sociodemographic and clinical factors. Primary outcomes of interest include mental health variables such as psychological distress, depressive symptoms, and posttraumatic stress disorders. Other domains of interest include potentially mediating or moderating influences such as workplace conditions, trust in the government, and the country’s income level. RESULTS: As of August 2021, ~ 34,000 health workers have been recruited. A general characterization of the recruited samples by sociodemographic and workplace variables is presented. Most participating countries have identified several health facilities where they can identify denominators and attain acceptable response rates. Of the 26 countries, 22 are collecting data and 2 plan to start shortly. CONCLUSIONS: This is one of the most extensive global studies on the mental health of healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, including a variety of countries with diverse economic realities and different levels of severity of pandemic and management. Moreover, unlike most previous studies, we included workers (clinical and non-clinical staff) in a wide range of settings.     Efficacy and Safety of Ixekizumab in the Treatment of Radiographic Axial Spondyloarthritis:Sixteen-Week Results From a Phase III Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial in Patients With Prior Inadequate Response to or Intolerance of Tumor Necrosis Factor Inhibitors

    Objective: To investigate the efficacy and safety of ixekizumab in patients with active radiographic axial spondyloarthritis (SpA) and prior inadequate response to or intolerance of 1 or 2 tumor necrosis factor inhibitors (TNFi). Methods: In this phase III randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, adult patients with an inadequate response to or intolerance of 1 or 2 TNFi and an established diagnosis of axial SpA (according to the Assessment of SpondyloArthritis international Society [ASAS] criteria for radiographic axial SpA, with radiographic sacroiliitis defined according to the modified New York criteria and ≥1 feature of SpA) were recruited and randomized 1:1:1 to receive placebo or 80-mg subcutaneous ixekizumab every 2 weeks (IXEQ2W) or 4 weeks (IXEQ4W), with an 80-mg or 160-mg starting dose. The primary end point was 40% improvement in disease activity according to the ASAS criteria (ASAS40) at week 16. Secondary outcomes and safety were also assessed. Results: A total of 316 patients were randomized to receive placebo (n = 104), IXEQ2W (n = 98), or IXEQ4W (n = 114). At week 16, significantly higher proportions of IXEQ2W patients (n = 30 [30.6%]; P = 0.003) or IXEQ4W patients (n = 29 [25.4%]; P = 0.017) had achieved an ASAS40 response versus the placebo group (n = 13 [12.5%]), with statistically significant differences reported as early as week 1 with ixekizumab treatment. Statistically significant improvements in disease activity, function, quality of life, and spinal magnetic resonance imaging–evident inflammation were observed after 16 weeks of ixekizumab treatment versus placebo. Treatment-emergent adverse events (AEs) with ixekizumab treatment were more frequent than with placebo. Serious AEs were similar across treatment arms. One death was reported (IXEQ2W group). Conclusion: Ixekizumab treatment for 16 weeks in patients with active radiographic axial SpA and previous inadequate response to or intolerance of 1 or 2 TNFi yields rapid and significant improvements in the signs and symptoms of radiographic axial SpA versus placebo

    Mortality from gastrointestinal congenital anomalies at 264 hospitals in 74 low-income, middle-income, and high-income countries: a multicentre, international, prospective cohort study

    Summary Background Congenital anomalies are the fifth leading cause of mortality in children younger than 5 years globally. Many gastrointestinal congenital anomalies are fatal without timely access to neonatal surgical care, but few studies have been done on these conditions in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). We compared outcomes of the seven most common gastrointestinal congenital anomalies in low-income, middle-income, and high-income countries globally, and identified factors associated with mortality. Methods We did a multicentre, international prospective cohort study of patients younger than 16 years, presenting to hospital for the first time with oesophageal atresia, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, intestinal atresia, gastroschisis, exomphalos, anorectal malformation, and Hirschsprung’s disease. Recruitment was of consecutive patients for a minimum of 1 month between October, 2018, and April, 2019. We collected data on patient demographics, clinical status, interventions, and outcomes using the REDCap platform. Patients were followed up for 30 days after primary intervention, or 30 days after admission if they did not receive an intervention. The primary outcome was all-cause, in-hospital mortality for all conditions combined and each condition individually, stratified by country income status. We did a complete case analysis. Findings We included 3849 patients with 3975 study conditions (560 with oesophageal atresia, 448 with congenital diaphragmatic hernia, 681 with intestinal atresia, 453 with gastroschisis, 325 with exomphalos, 991 with anorectal malformation, and 517 with Hirschsprung’s disease) from 264 hospitals (89 in high-income countries, 166 in middleincome countries, and nine in low-income countries) in 74 countries. Of the 3849 patients, 2231 (58·0%) were male. Median gestational age at birth was 38 weeks (IQR 36–39) and median bodyweight at presentation was 2·8 kg (2·3–3·3). Mortality among all patients was 37 (39·8%) of 93 in low-income countries, 583 (20·4%) of 2860 in middle-income countries, and 50 (5·6%) of 896 in high-income countries (p<0·0001 between all country income groups). Gastroschisis had the greatest difference in mortality between country income strata (nine [90·0%] of ten in lowincome countries, 97 [31·9%] of 304 in middle-income countries, and two [1·4%] of 139 in high-income countries; p≤0·0001 between all country income groups). Factors significantly associated with higher mortality for all patients combined included country income status (low-income vs high-income countries, risk ratio 2·78 [95% CI 1·88–4·11], p<0·0001; middle-income vs high-income countries, 2·11 [1·59–2·79], p<0·0001), sepsis at presentation (1·20 [1·04–1·40], p=0·016), higher American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score at primary intervention (ASA 4–5 vs ASA 1–2, 1·82 [1·40–2·35], p<0·0001; ASA 3 vs ASA 1–2, 1·58, [1·30–1·92], p<0·0001]), surgical safety checklist not used (1·39 [1·02–1·90], p=0·035), and ventilation or parenteral nutrition unavailable when needed (ventilation 1·96, [1·41–2·71], p=0·0001; parenteral nutrition 1·35, [1·05–1·74], p=0·018). Administration of parenteral nutrition (0·61, [0·47–0·79], p=0·0002) and use of a peripherally inserted central catheter (0·65 [0·50–0·86], p=0·0024) or percutaneous central line (0·69 [0·48–1·00], p=0·049) were associated with lower mortality. Interpretation Unacceptable differences in mortality exist for gastrointestinal congenital anomalies between lowincome, middle-income, and high-income countries. Improving access to quality neonatal surgical care in LMICs will be vital to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3.2 of ending preventable deaths in neonates and children younger than 5 years by 2030

    Diseño del plan de emergencia contra incendios y contingencia para el fenómeno del niño 2016 para la facultad de ingeniería en ciencias de la tierra (fict).

    El proyecto fue realizado en la Facultad de Ingeniería en Ciencias de la Tierra (FICT); parte de la necesidad del cumplimiento con la Normativa Legal vigente del país; Reglamento de Seguridad y Salud de los trabajadores-Decreto ejecutivo 2393, Resolución No. C.D 333, Reglamento de Prevención de Incendios. Para ello, se realizó el análisis general cualitativo de las vulnerabilidades de la FICT con la matriz de amenazas, se midió y se concluyó que las amenazas de mayor nivel de riesgo son la amenaza de incendio y Fenómeno del Niño. Se analizó de manera cuantitativa y cualitativa las amenazas de riesgo alto, utilizando el método simplificado de evaluación de riesgo de incendio que valora de forma global las instalaciones, equipos contra incendio y los procesos que se realizan. Como resultado, se obtuvo una calificación de riesgo malo. Para la evaluación de los efectos adversos generados por el paso del Fenómeno del Niño, se utilizó la matriz de amenaza, vulnerabilidad y riesgo.GuayaquilIngeniero Industria

    Using remote seminars to teach animal behavior

    International audienceIn response to the COVID-19 crisis, numerous academic conferences and seminars were moved online. Some remote (online) seminars have the aim to be maintained permanently after the pandemic, offering weekly opportunities for scientists, postdocs, and students to learn about research and to improve global networking. Remote seminars are a good option to promote inclusion and diversity, allowing students worldwide to participate and to interact with researchers from a broad cultural and ethnic background. Capitalizing on our experience with the ongoing International Remote Seminar on Frontiers in Social Evolution (FINE), we propose four teaching tools that can be integrated into undergraduate and graduate courses and that can be adapted for use with most remote seminar series. We make recommendations for the use of: (i) Certified remote seminar attendance. (ii) Relevant articles from the primary literature. (iii) Teaching slides, and (iv) Recorded seminars. Our aims are to promote and facilitate the use of the proposed teaching tools in Animal Behavior and related courses, and to encourage other remote seminar organizers to make teaching tools available
