A multi-layered Bayesian network model for structured document retrieval
New standards in document representation, like for example SGML, XML, and MPEG-7, compel Information Retrieval to design and implement models and tools to index, retrieve and present documents according to the given document structure. The paper presents the design of an Information Retrieval system for multimedia structured documents, like for example journal articles, e-books, and MPEG-7 videos. The system is based on Bayesian Networks, since this class of mathematical models enable to represent and quantify the relations between the structural components of the document. Some preliminary results on the system implementation are also presented

More cat than cute? Interpretable Prediction of Adjective-Noun Pairs
The increasing availability of affect-rich multimedia resources has bolstered
interest in understanding sentiment and emotions in and from visual content.
Adjective-noun pairs (ANP) are a popular mid-level semantic construct for
capturing affect via visually detectable concepts such as "cute dog" or
"beautiful landscape". Current state-of-the-art methods approach ANP prediction
by considering each of these compound concepts as individual tokens, ignoring
the underlying relationships in ANPs. This work aims at disentangling the
contributions of the `adjectives' and `nouns' in the visual prediction of ANPs.
Two specialised classifiers, one trained for detecting adjectives and another
for nouns, are fused to predict 553 different ANPs. The resulting ANP
prediction model is more interpretable as it allows us to study contributions
of the adjective and noun components. Source code and models are available at

On the SU(2)-Higgs Phase Transition
The properties of the Confinement-Higgs phase transition in the SU(2)-Higgs
model with fixed modulus are investigated. We show that the system exhibits a
transient behavior up to L=24 along which the order of the phase transition
cannot be discerned. To get stronger conclusions about this point, without
going to prohibitive large lattice sizes, we have introduced a second
(next-to-nearest neighbors) gauge-Higgs coupling, k2. On this extended
parameter space we find a line of phase transitions which become increasely
weaker as k2 tends to 0. The results point to a first order character for the
transition with the standard action (k2 = 0).Comment: Replaced with revised version, some minor changes added. Accepted for
publication in Nuc. Phys.

American Trypanosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi. Benznidazole and nifurtimox are drugs that have been used for its therapy; nevertheless, they have collateral effects in long-term treatments. NADHfumarate reductase is a potential pharmacological target since it is essential for the survival of parasites and is not found in humans. Therefore, the aim of this work was to design through computational methods a family of new molecules derived from imidazole, to characterize their electronic structure, physicochemical properties, and intermolecular interactions with the enzyme NADH-fumarate reductase of Trypanosoma cruzi, with the purpose of selecting the molecule with lower toxicity and potential therapeutic effect as an enzymatic inhibitor. The quantum-chemical descriptors allowed us to select the molecules with the best physicochemical properties and lowest toxicity. A high-quality three-dimensional structure of NADH-fumarate reductase was obtained by homology modeling studies. Water molecules do not have an influence in the interaction between fumarate and NADH-fumarate reductase. The main hydrogen bonding interactions for fumarate were identified in NADH, Lys172 and Arg89; while hydrophobic interactions in Phe479, Thr174, Met63. Finally, it was found that the molecules S3-8, S2-8 and S1-8 could be potential inhibitors of NADH-fumarate reductase.
