    El Mes de la Entomología: acercando el laboratorio de investigación científica a las escuelas de nivel inicial de la Patagonia

    Como investigadores en ciencias, entendemos que enseñar las ciencias naturales en la escuela primaria es un desafío para los docentes y una excelente oportunidad para sentar las bases del pensamiento científico. “El Mes de la Entomología” fue un proyecto llevado a cabo por investigadores y becarios del CONICET y del INTA Bariloche, cuyo objetivo principal fue mejorar el conocimiento existente sobre la biología de los insectos, de docentes y estudiantes de nivel primario de escuelas de Bariloche y escuelas rurales del NO de la Patagonia. Se resaltaron los aspectos positivos de los insectos, destacando tanto su importancia biológica y aplicada así como su diversidad y abundancia. Participaron un total de 12 escuelas de las 55 invitadas (entre privadas y públicas) y 600 estudiantes. “El Mes de la Entomología” fue una actividad que además sirvió tanto para explorar problemáticas científicas locales, como para acercar la figura del científico a los docentes y estudiantes.As science researchers we believe that teaching Natural Sciences at elementary school level is both a challenge for teachers and an excellent opportunity to establish the foundations of scientific thinking. “The Entomology Month” was a project, carried out by researchers and scholars from CONICET and INTA Bariloche, whose main objective was to improve the existing knowledge about insect biology. Activities were addressed to teachers and elementary school students from Bariloche and rural areas in NW Patagonia. The positive aspects of insects were especially highlighted, by enhancing their biological and applied importance, as well as their diversity and abundance. Twelve out of the 55 invited schools (both private and public) and 600 students were counted among the participants.     Do measures of physical function enhance the prediction of persistent pain and disability following a whiplash injury?:Protocol for a prospective observational study in Spain

    INTRODUCTION: Not all factors that predict persistent pain and disability following whiplash injury are known. In particular, few physical factors, such as changes in movement and muscle behaviour, have been investigated. The aim of this study is to identify predictive factors that are associated with the development of persistent pain and disability following a whiplash injury by combining contemporary measures of physical function together with established psychological and pain-related predictive factors.METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A prospective observational study will recruit 150 consecutive eligible patients experiencing whiplash-related symptoms, admitted to a private physiotherapy clinic in Spain within 15 days of their whiplash injury. Poor outcome will be measured using the Neck Disability Index (NDI), defined as an NDI score of 30% or greater at 6 months post injury. Candidate predictors, including demographic characteristics, injury characteristics, pain characteristics, self-reported psychosocial factors and physical factors, will be collected at baseline (within 15 days of inception). Regression analyses will be performed to identify factors that are associated with persistent neck pain and disability over the study period.ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The project has been approved by the Ethics Committee of the province of Malaga, Spain (#30052019). The results of this study will be published in peer-reviewed journals.</p

    Prevalence of Depression and its Associated Factors Among Adults during Third Wave of COVID-19 Pandemic in Malaysia, 2021

    Malaysia recently entered third-wave of COVID-19 pandemic starting from October 2020 to end of January 2021. Therefore, objective of our study was to identify the prevalence of depression and its associated factors among adults during third wave of COVID-19 pandemic in Malaysia. A total of 1468 Malaysian adults participated in this cross-sectional web-based survey. A standardized questionnaire was generated using the Google Form, and the link was shared through social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and WhatsApp. Patient Health Questionnaires (PHQ-9) was used to assess the levels of depression. Among 1468 participants, 320 (22 %) and 358 (24.6 %) indicated to have moderate to severe depression during third-wave of COVID-19 in Malaysia. Multiple predictors were identified that contributed to depression. These included female gender, family’s source income affected by the pandemic, do not perform exercise, victim of abuse and those with family and/or friends infected with COVID-19 virus. COVID-19 pandemic had caused the implementation of lockdown and physical distancing in Malaysia and nations across the globe. The pandemic had brought serious negative impacts on mental health of the adults especially depression especially during third wave of pandemic. The findings of our study suggested that new interventions or strategies are needed to be developed to address the severity of depression among Malaysian adults

    Spectral Divergence for Cultural Heritage applications

    Using reflectance spectra allows to compare the pigment mixtures in paintings. In order to improve the actual subjective spectral comparison, we propose to use spectral similarity measures. The Kullback-Leibler spectral Pseudo-Divergence (KLPD) is selected due to his expected metrological properties. The comparison between a subjective assessment and the objective assessment is developed for mixture of pigments coming from a cultural heritage painting. The obtained results show the good quality of the relationship between the subjective results and the objective ones using the KLPD

    How Does Facilitation in Healthcare Work? Using Mechanism Mapping to Illuminate the Black Box of a Meta-Implementation Strategy

    BACKGROUND: Healthcare facilitation, an implementation strategy designed to improve the uptake of effective clinical innovations in routine practice, has produced promising yet mixed results in randomized implementation trials and has not been fully researched across different contexts. OBJECTIVE: Using mechanism mapping, which applies directed acyclic graphs that decompose an effect of interest into hypothesized causal steps and mechanisms, we propose a more concrete description of how healthcare facilitation works to inform its further study as a meta-implementation strategy. METHODS: Using a modified Delphi consensus process, co-authors developed the mechanistic map based on a three-step process. First, they developed an initial logic model by collectively reviewing the literature and identifying the most relevant studies of healthcare facilitation components and mechanisms to date. Second, they applied the logic model to write vignettes describing how facilitation worked (or did not) based on recent empirical trials that were selected via consensus for inclusion and diversity in contextual settings (US, international sites). Finally, the mechanistic map was created based on the collective findings from the vignettes. FINDINGS: Theory-based healthcare facilitation components informing the mechanistic map included staff engagement, role clarification, coalition-building through peer experiences and identifying champions, capacity-building through problem solving barriers, and organizational ownership of the implementation process. Across the vignettes, engagement of leaders and practitioners led to increased socialization of the facilitator\u27s role in the organization. This in turn led to clarifying of roles and responsibilities among practitioners and identifying peer experiences led to increased coherence and sense-making of the value of adopting effective innovations. Increased trust develops across leadership and practitioners through expanded capacity in adoption of the effective innovation by identifying opportunities that mitigated barriers to practice change. Finally, these mechanisms led to eventual normalization and ownership of the effective innovation and healthcare facilitation process. IMPACT: Mapping methodology provides a novel perspective of mechanisms of healthcare facilitation, notably how sensemaking, trust, and normalization contribute to quality improvement. This method may also enable more efficient and impactful hypothesis-testing and application of complex implementation strategies, with high relevance for lower-resourced settings, to inform effective innovation uptake

    We present a case of Candida dubliniensis meningitis that developed 2 months after apparently successful treatment of an episode of C. dubliniensis candidemia in a heart-lung transplant recipient in Australia. This case highlights the importance of follow-up in patients with candidemia or disseminated infection, especially in immunosuppressed patients

    Determinación del impacto de chinches sobre la calidad química del grano de soja.

    La productividad del sistema agroalimentario debe protegerse de plagas insectiles. Las chinches Piezodorus guildinii y Nezara viridula afectan la proteína de los granos, especialmente en los estratos medio e inferior del cultivo. A mayor nivel de chinches (0-3 chinches/m lineal) desde el llenado de granos, el porcentaje de proteína en grano se reduce significativamente, encontrando los valores más bajos en el estrato inferior. Esto afecta la calidad industrial del grano de soja, por lo cual se recomienda no postergar el monitoreo y realizar el adecuado control de chinches en los estadios reproductivos del cultivo.Fil: Fernandez, Cristian.
