This survey aims to describe the mathematical literacy of state junior high school students in Kupang city, East Nusa Tenggara province. It was done not only due to the low achievement of Indonesian 15-year-old students in PISA but also because there are no surveys which had been done before to map the mathematical literacy of students in Kupang city. A total of 377 respondents who were the ninth grade students representing six state junior high schools in Kupang were collected by two-stage cluster randomized sampling. The students were assessed using fifteen problems adopted from PISA 2012 and some development researches with a product of mathematical literacy problems so that those items were highly reliable to measure students mathematical literacy. The categorization of students mathematical literacy was carried out using Mamdani’s Fuzzy Inference method. The input of fuzzification was a score of three process domains assessed by those fifteen problems, specifically formulating, employing, and interpreting. The output of defuzzification was students mathematical literacy score used to determine the category of students mathematical literacy. The results showed that the mathematical literacy of state junior high school students in Kupang city was generally classified as a low category

The environment can become a source of learning in a process of mathematical learning related to the real world. One source learning in the environment is cultural. Mathematical lessons that studied educated participants at school are sometimes different to important transatic problems that encountered in everyday life, makes it more difficult learning participants linking the links of furatic concepts  that  are  formal  with  issues  of  culture.  Etnomathematics  connects cultures with mathematics learning. The purpose of this research is to obtain the description of the value of the impostor’s value and growing up to the cultural society of  Waibalun. This type of  research  is a  qualitative research  with  the Etnographic  design.  Data  collection  by  observation,  interviews  and documentation. The subject in this study is three person taken Purposive against public figures who learn and understand well about indigenous homes. The object of this  research is the Waibalun indigenous home. Involving underrepresented groups: How unpaid carers influenced our data analysis

Objectives The recent census found that five million people in England and Wales provide unpaid care. With social services struggling, unpaid carers face increasing pressure. The North West London Networked Data Lab aimed to understand unpaid carers’ needs, health issues, and care pathways through public involvement and analysis of linked datasets. Methods We used the Discover dataset containing primary, secondary, mental health, and social care data of 2.5 million North West Londoners to explore our aims. To ensure the questions asked of the data mattered locally, we interviewed five unpaid carers to understand the issues they faced. One carer worked more closely with the data analyst to define the questions. The interim results were presented to a diverse group of unpaid carers to see whether anything resonated with them, surprised them, or required further research. The group also helped develop an engaging and accessible infographic to communicate our findings. Results The unpaid carer cohort in our dataset were, on average, older females from deprived areas, highlighting gender and socioeconomic inequities in caring responsibilities. Unpaid carers had a higher prevalence of long-term conditions before they were identified as a carer (e.g. hypertension, depression, anxiety and diabetes) and were more likely to use healthcare services than non-carers. Through speaking to unpaid carers, we learned that many hadn’t identified as a carer or mentioned it to their GP for many years. In fact, they had only had their carer status recorded after visiting their GP for an issue linked to their caring responsibilities. Our public involvement helped to highlight a major limitation of the data, particularly as men are less likely to interact with their GPs. Conclusion Our analysis found unpaid carers were more likely to have certain conditions and more likely to have multiple long-term conditions. Public involvement was critical in making sense of these findings and identifying policy and practice recommendations. Giving people a meaningful voice in population data research can also build public trust

Tumour-draining axillary lymph nodes in patients with large and locally advanced breast cancers undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC): the crucial contribution of immune cells (effector, regulatory) and cytokines (TH1, TH2) to immune-mediated tumour cell death induced by NAC

    Get PDF
Background The tumour microenvironment consists of malignant cells, stroma and immune cells. In women with large and locally advanced breast cancers (LLABCs) undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC), tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), various subsets (effector, regulatory) and cytokines in the primary tumour play a key role in the induction of tumour cell death and a pathological complete response (pCR) with NAC. Their contribution to a pCR in nodal metastases, however, is poorly studied and was investigated. Methods Axillary lymph nodes (ALNs) (24 with and 9 without metastases) from women with LLABCs undergoing NAC were immunohistochemically assessed for TILs, T effector and regulatory cell subsets, NK cells and cytokine expression using labelled antibodies, employing established semi-quantitative methods. IBM SPSS statistical package (21v) was used. Non-parametric (paired and unpaired) statistical analyses were performed. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were carried out to establish the prediction of a pCR and Spearman’s Correlation Coefficient was used to determine the correlation of immune cell infiltrates in ALN metastatic and primary breast tumours. Results In ALN metastases high levels of TILs, CD4+ and CD8+ T and CD56+ NK cells were significantly associated with pCRs.. Significantly higher levels of Tregs (FOXP3+, CTLA-4+) and CD56+ NK cells were documented in ALN metastases than in the corresponding primary breast tumours. CD8+ T and CD56+ NK cells showed a positive correlation between metastatic and primary tumours. A high % CD8+ and low % FOXP3+ T cells and high CD8+: FOXP3+ ratio in metastatic ALNs (tumour-free para-cortex) were associated with pCRs. Metastatic ALNs expressed high IL-10, low IL-2 and IFN-ϒ. Conclusions Our study has provided new data characterising the possible contribution of T effector and regulatory cells and NK cells and T helper1 and 2 cytokines to tumour cell death associated with NAC in ALNs
