Identification of Caribbean basin hurricanes from Spanish documentary sources
This paper analyses five hurricanes that occurred in the period 1600 to 1800. These examples were identified during a systematic search in the General Archive of the Indies (AGI) in Seville. The research combined the expertise of climatologists and historians in order to optimise the search and analysis strategies. Results demonstrate the potential of this archive for the assessment of hurricanes in this period and show some of the difficulties involved in the collection of evidence of hurricane activity. The documents provide detailed descriptions of a hurricane's impacts and allow us to identify previously unreported hurricanes, obtain more precise dates for hurricanes previously identified, better define the area affected by a given hurricane and, finally, better assess a hurricane's intensity
The figure of risk capital has turned into a current issue in economic life and literature, mostly when we analyse the financial sources of small and médium innovative compahies.

Ludwig's angina and ketoacidosis as a first manifestation of diabetes mellitus
Ludwig?s angina is a serious and rapidly progressive infectious process that spreads through the floor of the mouth and neck. In this paper we present an infrequent case of a patient who suffered an odontogenic infection with poor response to the previous treatment, which evolved towards a Ludwig?s angina combined with ketoacidosis in the context of a diabetes mellitus not known before. According to the literature reviewed, this case report represents the first contribution of a Ludwig?s angina and ketoacidosis as an initial manifestation of a diabetes mellitus. The airway management, the antibiotic prescription and the surgical drainage allowed the healing of the patient without medical complications. Factors of co-morbidity like the diabetes mellitus together with focus tooth of infection may eventually turn into serious medical complications as the diabetic ketoacidosis and develop potentially lethal cervical infections
Finding an objective cost for sliceable flexgrid transponders
We analyze the objective cost of SBVTs as a function of the traffic conveyed by IP/MPLS-over-flexgrid networks. Optimal results show that cost increment with respect to BVTs is related to the aggregation level.Postprint (published version
ABSTRACT: This paper analyses the technical efficiency of European road freight transport companies over the period 2004-2012. The results show that road freight companies that use logistic platforms appropriately are more efficient. Other interesting results were also obtained showing that the liberalisation of transport sectors, inventory management and the use of Information and Communications Technology all lead to improvements in companies' technical efficiency.
Interplay between genetics and lifestyle on pain susceptibility in women with fibromyalgia: the al-Ándalus project

It is widely acknowledged that the experience of pain is promoted by both genetic susceptibility
and environmental factors such as engaging in physical activity (PA), and that pain-related cognitions are also
important. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to test the association of 64 polymorphisms (34 candidate
genes) and the gene–gene, gene–PA and gene–sedentary behaviour interactions with pain and pain-related
cognitions in women with FM.
Methods. Saliva samples from 274 women with FM [mean (S.D.) age 51.7 (7.7) years] were collected for extracting
DNA. We measured PA and sedentary behaviour by accelerometers for a week, pain with algometry and questionnaires,
and pain-related cognitions with questionnaires. To assess the robustness of the results, a meta-analysis
was also performed.
Results. The rs6311 and rs6313 polymorphisms (5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 2A, HTR2A) were individually
related to algometer scores. The interaction of rs4818 (catechol-O-methyltransferase, COMT) and rs1799971 (opioid
receptor l gene, OPRM1) was related to pain catastrophizing. Five gene–behaviour interactions were significant:
the interactions of sedentary behaviour with rs1383914 (adrenoceptor alpha 1A, ADRA1A), rs6860 (charged multivesicular
body protein 1A, CHMP1A), rs4680 (COMT), rs165599 (COMT) and rs12994338 (SCN9A) on bodily pain subscale
of the Short Form 36. Furthermore, the meta-analysis showed an association between rs4680 (COMT) and
severity of FM symptoms (codominant model, P-value 0.032).
Conclusion. The HTR2A gene (individually), COMT and OPRM1 gene–gene interaction, and the interactions
of sedentary behaviour with ADRA1A, CHMP1A, COMT and SCN9A genes were associated with pain-related
outcomes. Collectively, findings from the present study indicate a modest contribution of genetics and gene–
sedentary behaviour interaction to pain and pain catastrophizing in women with FM. Future research should
examine whether reducing sedentary behaviour is particularly beneficial for reducing pain in women with genetic
susceptibility to pain.Spanish Government I + D+i DEP2010-15639
