Protective factors against alcohol abuse in college students: spirituality, wisdom, and self-transcendence
2011 Fall.Includes bibliographical references.Past research consistently suggests that spirituality is a protective factor against substance abuse in adolescents and adults. Many other personality and environmental factors have been shown to predict alcohol abuse and alcohol-related problems, yet much of the variance in alcohol abuse remains unexplained. Alcohol misuse continues to plague college campuses in the United States and recent attempts to reduce problematic drinking have fallen short. In an effort to further understand the factors contributing to students' alcohol abuse, this study examines how spirituality, wisdom, and self-transcendence impact the drinking behaviors of college students. Two groups of students were studied: 1. students who were mandated for psychoeducational and clinical intervention as a result of violating the university alcohol policy; 2. a comparison group of students from the general undergraduate population who had never been sanctioned for alcohol misuse on campus. Alcohol use behaviors were assessed through calculating students' reported typical blood alcohol level and alcohol-related problems. Results showed that wisdom is significantly and negatively related to blood alcohol level and alcohol-related problems for the mandated group but not the comparison group. Self-transcendence was inversely related to blood alcohol level for the control group only and spirituality was not related to alcohol use measures for either group. Participant group membership, gender, and wisdom accounted for a significant amount of variance in blood alcohol level, but only group membership explained variance in alcohol-related problems. Gender analyses were conducted by group, revealing significant differences in how spirituality, wisdom, and self-transcendence relate to alcohol use for men and women. Implications of the findings and suggestions for future research are offered
Incest: The Need to Develop a Response to Intrafamily Sexual Abuse
Incest is a complex phenomenon. The author briefly acquaints the reader with research regarding the incestuous family by attempting to describe the dynamics of the relationship and by indentifying some common characteristics of the participants. The author notes the difficulties inherent in this task and encourages further research in this sensitive area. The author then overviews and summarizes the variety of statutes in the United States which are utilized when responding to the incestuous family, as well as noting current reforms in this legislation. The author concluded with a report of innovations in the response to incestuous families and suggests additional reforms
Reduction of tilt rotor download using circulation control
The effect of boundary layer control blowing on the download of a wing in the wake of a hovering rotor was measured in a small scale experiment. The objective was to evaluate the potential of boundary layer control blowing for reducing tilt rotor download. Variations were made in rotor thrust coefficient, blowing pressure ratio, and blowing slot height. The effect of these parameter variations on the wing download and wing surface pressures is presented. The boundary layer control blowing caused reductions in the wing download of 25 to 55 percent
Laser phase modulation approaches towards ensemble quantum computing
Selective control of decoherence is demonstrated for a multilevel system by
generalizing the instantaneous phase of any chirped pulse as individual terms
of a Taylor series expansion. In the case of a simple two-level system, all odd
terms in the series lead to population inversion while the even terms lead to
self-induced transparency. These results also hold for multiphoton transitions
that do not have any lower-order photon resonance or any intermediate virtual
state dynamics within the laser pulse-width. Such results form the basis of a

Evaluating dictation task measures for the study of speech perception
This paper shows that the dictation task, a well- known testing instrument in language education, has untapped potential as a research tool for studying speech perception. We describe how transcriptions can be scored on measures of lexical, orthographic, phonological, and semantic similarity to target phrases to provide comprehensive information about accuracy at different processing levels. The former three measures are automatically extractable, increasing objectivity, and the middle two are gradient, providing finer-grained information than traditionally used. We evaluate the measures in an English dictation task featuring phonetically reduced continuous speech. Whereas the lexical and orthographic measures emphasize listeners’ word identification difficulties, the phonological measure demonstrates that listeners can often still recover phonological features, and the semantic measure captures their ability to get the gist of the utterances. Correlational analyses and a discussion of practical and theoretical considerations show that combining multiple measures improves the dictation task’s utility as a research tool
High-Precision Entropy Values for Spanning Trees in Lattices
Shrock and Wu have given numerical values for the exponential growth rate of
the number of spanning trees in Euclidean lattices. We give a new technique for
numerical evaluation that gives much more precise values, together with
rigorous bounds on the accuracy. In particular, the new values resolve one of

Heterogeneous perturbations in the Doppler-free S1 ← S0 two-photon spectrum of benzene: Evidence for intrastate coupling
Rotational perturbations are identified in Doppler-free two-photon spectra of the 1410 and 1410110 vibronic bands in C6H6. Evidence is found that Coriolis coupling between some of the rotational levels of two distinct vibrational states within S1 is the mechanism responsible. This coupling mechanism is thought to be responsible for irreversible intramolecular relaxation at higher excess energies and higher vibrational state densities
Improved cache performance in Monte Carlo transport calculations using energy banding
We present an energy banding algorithm for Monte Carlo (MC) neutral particle transport simulations which depend on large cross section lookup tables. In MC codes, read-only cross section data tables are accessed frequently, exhibit poor locality, and are typically too much large to fit in fast memory. Thus, performance is often limited by long latencies to RAM, or by off-node communication latencies when the data footprint is very large and must be decomposed on a distributed memory machine. The proposed energy banding algorithm allows maximal temporal reuse of data in band sizes that can flexibly accommodate different architectural features. The energy banding algorithm is general and has a number of benefits compared to the traditional approach. In the present analysis we explore its potential to achieve improvements in time-to-solution on modern cache-based architectures.United States. Department of Energy.
