Változó nemzeti diskurzusok: az azonosság és a különbség konstrukciói magyar állampolgárok és kisebbségben élő magyarok viszonyáról = Discourses of the nation and its alien in the relation of Hungarian citizens and ethnic Hungarians abroad

Kutatásunk a nemzet diszkurzív és kulturális megteremtésének és elsajátításának módjaival foglalkozott. Azt vizsgáltuk, hogy a magyar nacionalizmus miként jön létre, termelődik újjá és épül be a tágabb társadalmi viszonyokba, a magyarságról – mint azonosságról – szóló mindennapi beszéd, és vele szoros összefüggésben az alteritások – elsősorban a cigányság és a határontúli magyarság – diszkurzív megteremtése által. Másfelől a nemzet performatív megvalósulásait vizsgáltuk, azt, ahogyan bizonyos intézmények a legkülönbözőbb területeken – zenében, irodalomban, öltözködésben, turizmusiparban, médiában – előállítják „a nemzetit” , az utóbbiak fogyasztása, kisajátítása pedig a nemzeti mivolt megtapasztalásának és kinyilvánításának módjává válik. A kutatásban kvalitatív módszerekkel dolgoztunk, fókuszcsoportos interjúk és etnográfiai megfigyelések alapján rekonstruáltuk a nemzetről szóló társadalmi beszédet, míg a nemzet performatív megvalósulását a nacionalizmus új formáit megteremtő intézményekre, azok tevékenységére, termékeire és hatásaira fókuszálva vizsgáltuk. Az utóbbiak sikerét azzal magyaráztuk, hogy a korábban tabunak számító kérdéseket – elsősorban szomszéd nemzetekkel és hazai kisebbségeinkkel, elsősorban a romákkal kapcsolatos mai és történeti sérelmeket – szimbolikus erőforrásként tudták újra használatba venni, és általa mind lokális mind regionális viszonylatban egy „a magyarságot” felértékelő hierarchikus beszédmódot teremtettek meg. | Following the young research paradigm on nationalism and everyday life (Brubaker 2004, Brubaker at al 2006), on everyday nationhood (Fox és Miller-Idriss 2008) or on popular resonance of nationalism (Edensor 2002, Billig 1995) this was a project on everyday nationalism in Hungary. We have considered the everyday and popular forms of nationalism from two perspectives: the discourse aspect, examining how Hungarian nationalism is reproduced and embedded in broader social context through the discursive acts engaging the “magyarság” and its alterns, first of all the “cigányság” (the Roma) and the “határontúli magyarság” (the co-ethnics abroad). We also applied the intuitionalist approach in order to explore how certain institutions running in different fields from music, through literature, clothing, tourism and media produce the nationally marked or noticeable nationalistic commodities, shaping increasingly ordinary people’s experience of nationhood. We used qualitative methods, applying ethnography and focus group interview to reconstruct the ‘talk on the nation’ from a micro-perspective, while semi-structured individual interviews and ethnographic observations in order to understand the performative aspects of the nation (‘doing the nation’), activities and motivations related to the production and consumption of national or nationalistic commodities (festival of national rock bands, tourism and pilgrimage to places of authentic nationhood etc.

Mainstreaming the Extreme: Intersecting Challenges from the Far Right in Europe

This is the first issue of the new journal Intersections. East European Journal of Society and Politics (EEJSP). As our point of departure, we take a timely subject for European societies: the far-right phenomenon as related to mainstream politics and discourse. Instead of relying exclusively on views of radical developments prevalent in the field of politics, our aim was to bring together insights from sociology, social anthropology, political science and media studies, as well as from discourse and network analysis, and integrate them into a comparative and interdisciplinary study of the phenomenon. As far as the investigated topics are concerned, special attention has been paid to the interplay of media and politics, the discursive aspects of politics, and the role of cultural commodification beyond ideologies on the supply side as well as recent developments explaining increasing interest on the demand side

The Dilemmas of Solidarity of Civic Activists: Supporting Displaced Ukrainians in a Non‐Solidarian Regime

Civic actors working with marginalized and disadvantaged groups in society face various dilemmas associated with defining and, if needed, ranking human needs and vulnerabilities. Our article examines the reasonings for intervention in civic solidarity operations that emerged in response to the arrivals of displaced Ukrainians in Hungary in 2022-2023. Solidarians have strived to find spaces of action in an authoritarian regime that normalizes policy rationales of deservingness and social hierarchy in contrast to equality and inclusion‐based diversity. We engaged with those solidarity actors who showed some degree of reflexivity to the wider social, political, governance, and charity activism landscapes considering their position and operational ethos. The mixed research methods generated ethnographic and discursive data that allow us to offer a practice‐centered interpretation of civic actors' reasoning. This article explores the dilemmas that civic actors face when judging and prioritizing needs, responsibilities, and resources in comparing and contrasting the conditions of their own society and the situation of people with migratory trajectories. We identified three perspectives through which civic solidarity actors articulated their normative and strategic dilemmas: the origin and nature of the needs of the displaced people, the refugee assistance responsibilities thereby assigned, and the broader social care system in the host society. We offer insights into how solidarity actors discernibly departed from pure humanitarianism and deployed concepts of horizontal interdependence, anti‐discrimination, and layered human rights, applying their own vocabularies

Egy nemzetközi kutatás összehasonlító adataira és magyarországi tapasztalataira támaszkodva a kulturális különbségek és a társadalmi elkülönülés iskolai kezelésének módjait elemezzük.
