    Presencia y abundancia de aves acuáticas en la Meseta Strobel, Patagonia, Argentina

    La meseta Strobel, ubicada en la estepa patagónica, alberga más de 1500 lagunas que son utilizadas regularmente por aves acuáticas, incluyendo una de las principales poblaciones reproductivas del Macá Tobiano (Podiceps gallardoi), una especie endémica de la Patagonia austral. Se registró la presencia y abundancia de aves acuáticas en 41 lagunas, cubriendo el amplio espectro de la variabilidad ambiental de la región. Se llevaron a cabo seis campañas de campo desde fines de primavera a principios de otoño en el período 2004–2006. Se registraron un total de 18 especies de aves acuáticas correspondientes a cinco familias. La familia Anatidae fue la más representada con 12 especies, constituyendo el 85% de las aves acuáticas observadas. La distribución de las aves entre las lagunas fue variable, desde un 2.4% de lagunas ocupadas por el Falaropo Común (Steganopus tricolor) y el Pato Zambullidor Grande (Oxyura jamaicensis) hasta un 80% ocupadas por el Cisne Cuello Negro (Cygnus melanocorypha), y la abundancia varió mucho entre especies y estaciones. El Macá Tobiano, en particular, fue observado en 14 lagunas (1–81 individuos). Seis especies fueron detectadas reproduciéndose en la meseta: el Macá Tobiano, el Macá Plateado (Podiceps occipitalis), el Quetro Volador (Tachyeres patachonicus), el Pato Crestón (Anas specularioides), el Cauquén Común (Chloephaga picta) y la Gallareta Chica (Fulica leucoptera). El Macá Tobiano nidificó en cuatro lagunas, tres de las cuales no habían sido reportadas previamente como sitio de reproducción. Los resultados evidencian la necesidad de generar estudios futuros basados en la dinámica de uso de las lagunas para determinar adecuadamente la importancia de la meseta Strobel como hábitat para la avifauna acuática.The Strobel Plateau is a conspicuous and representative basaltic plateau (“meseta”) in the Patagonian steppe, Argentina. This plateau is dotted with more than 1500 shallow lakes, which are regularly used by waterbirds and support one of the main breeding populations of the near threatened Hooded Grebe (Podiceps gallardoi). We collected data on bird presence and abundance in 41 shallow lakes, covering a wide spectrum of the wetland environmental variability found in the area. We conducted six surveys from spring to fall between 2004 and 2006. We recorded a total of 18 waterbird species, which represent 5 different families. Anatidae was the family most represented with 12 species, accounting for 85% of the observed waterbirds. Waterbird distribution among lakes was variable, from 2.4% occupied lakes for Wilson’s Phalarope (Steganopus tricolor) and Andean Ruddy-Duck (Oxyura jamaicensis) to 80% for Black-necked Swan (Cygnus melanocorypha), and abundance varied greatly both between species and seasons. The Hooded Grebe, in particular, was recorded in 14 lakes (1–81 individuals). Six species were detected breeding in the area: Hooded Grebe, Silvery Grebe (Podiceps occipitalis), Flying Steamer-Duck (Tachyeres patachonicus), Crested Duck (Anas specularioides), Upland Goose (Chloephaga picta), and White-winged Coot (Fulica leucoptera). The Hooded Grebe nested at four lakes, three of them not previously known to hold breeding birds. Results point to the need of further studies on the dynamic nature of waterbird lake use to adequately assess the importance of the Strobel Plateau as waterbird habitat.Fil: Lancelotti, Julio Lucio.     The MIG Framework: Enabling Transparent Process Migration in Open MPI

    This paper introduces the mig framework: an Open MPI extension to transparently support the migration of application processes, over different nodes of a distributed High-Performance Computing (HPC) system. The framework provides mechanism on top of which suitable resource managers can implement policies to react to hardware faults, address performance variability, improve resource utilization, perform a fine-grained load balancing and power thermal management. Compared to other state-of-the-art approaches, the mig framework does not require changes in the application code. Moreover, it is highly maintainable, since it is mainly a self-contained solution that has required a very few changes in other already existing Open MPI frameworks. Experimental results have shown that the proposed extension does not introduce significant overhead in the application execution, while the penalty due to performing a migration can be properly taken into account by a resource manager

    Electromyography Activation of Shoulder and Trunk Muscles is Greater During Closed Chain Compared to Open Chain Exercises

    Background To compare the activation of shoulder and trunk muscles between six pairs of closed (CC) and open chain (OC) exercises for the upper extremity, matched for performance characteristics. The secondary aims were to compare shoulder and trunk muscle activation and shoulder activation ratios during each pair of CC and OC exercise. Methods Twenty-two healthy young adults were recruited. During visit 1, the 5-repetition maximum resistance was established for each CC and OC exercise. During visit 2, electromyography activation from the infraspinatus (INF), deltoid (DEL), serratus anterior (SA), upper, middle and lower trapezius (UT, MT, LT), erector spinae (ES) and external oblique (EO) muscles was collected during 5-repetition max of each exercise. Average activation was calculated during the concentric and eccentric phases of each exercises. Activation ratios (DEL/INF, UT/LT, UT/MT, UT/SA) were also calculated. Linear mixed models compared the activation by muscle collapsed across CC and OC exercises. A paired t-test compared the activation of each muscle and the activation ratios (DEL/INF, UT/LT, UT/MT, UT/SA) between each pair of CC and OC exercises. Results The INF, LT, ES, and EO had greater activation during both concentric (p = 0.03) and eccentric (p \u3c 0.01) phases of CC versus OC exercises. Activation ratios were lower in CC exercises compared to OC exercises (DEL/INF, 3 pairs; UT/LT, 2 pairs; UT/MT, 1 pair; UT/SA, 3 pairs). Conclusion Upper extremity CC exercises generated greater activation of shoulder and trunk muscles compared to OC exercises. Some of the CC exercises produced lower activation ratios compared to OC exercises

    A review of minimally invasive fracture stabilization in dogs and cats

    Objective: To summarize and discuss peer-reviewed studies on minimally invasive osteosynthesis (MIO) of long bone, physeal, and articular fractures in dogs and cats. Study design: Invited review. Methods: A critique of literature was performed to assess MIO feasibility, outcomes, and complications through PubMed, Scopus, and CAB abstracts research databases (2000-2020). Results: More than 40 MIO articles have been published in the last 15 years, but most studies had small numbers, lacked control groups, and used limited outcome measures. Studies generally showed that MIO was feasible in dogs and cats with low complication rates. The current evidence does not demonstrate superior bone healing or functional outcomes with MIO when compared to standard methods. Although treatment principles, case selection, and techniques varied depending on the anatomical location, there were no salient differences in complication rates among long bones, physeal, and articular fractures treated by MIO. Conclusion: The current available evidence and the personal experience of the authors support MIO as a promising fracture management modality. MIO can yield excellent outcomes when applied in carefully selected cases, performed by surgeons experienced in the technique. We cannot, however, conclude that MIO is superior to open fracture stabilization based on the available evidence in veterinary literature. Randomized controlled studies are warranted to prospectively compare MIO with other osteosynthesis techniques and thereby validate its role in fracture management for dogs and cats

    Fusarium solani infection after antimicrobial treatment of a severe bacterial peritonitis: a case report and review of the literature

    Fungal peritonitis is a rare but serious complication of peritoneal dialysis. This infection has been reported to be mostly caused by Candida species, and less frequently by a variety of other yeasts and moulds, such as Aspergillus, Penicillium, and  Fusarium spp. are commonly isolated from soil, plants and environmental surfaces, and rarely from non-immunosuppressed subjects. In this report, author describe a case of infection caused by Fusarium solani in a 59-year-old man undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. The fungus was recovered from cultures of peritoneal dialysate and the pathogen identification was carried out by mass spectrometry. The patient's outcome was favorable without complications after liposomal amphotericin B treatment along with peritoneal dialysis catheter removal

    Supraspinatus tendon micromorphology in individuals with subacromial pain syndrome

    Study Design: Cross-sectional cohort. Introduction: Tendon collagen organization can be estimated by peak spatial frequency radius (PSFR) on ultrasound images. Characterizing PSFR can define the contribution of collagen disruption to shoulder symptoms. Purpose of the Study: The purpose of this was to characterize the (1) supraspinatus tendon PSFR in participants with sub acromial pain syndrome (SPS) and healthy controls; (2) PSFR between participants grouped on a tendon visual quality score; and (3) relationship between PSFR with patient-reported pain, function, and shoulder strength. Methods: Participants with SPS (n ÂĽ 20) and age, sex, and arm-dominance matched healthy controls (n ÂĽ 20) completed strength testing in scaption and external rotation, and patient-reported pain, and functional outcomes. Supraspinatus tendon ultrasound images were acquired, and PSFR was calculated for a region of interest 15 mm medial to the supraspinatus footprint. PSFR was compared between groups using an independent t-test and an analysis of variance to compare between 3 groups for visually qualitatively rated tendon abnormalities. Relationships between PSFR with pain, function, and strength were assessed using Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: Supraspinatus tendon PSFR was not different between groups (P ÂĽ .190) or tendon qualitative ratings (P ÂĽ .556). No relationship was found between PSFR and pain, functional loss, and strength (P \u3e .05). Conclusions: Collagen disruption (PSFR) measured via ultrasound images of the supraspinatus tendon was not different between participants with SPS or in those with visually rated tendon defects. PSFR is not related to shoulder pain, function, and strength, suggesting that supraspinatus tendon collagen disorganization may not be a contributing factor to shoulder SPS. However, collagen disruption may not be isolated to a single region of interest. Level of Evidence: 3b: case-control study

    Gain-of-function p53 mutants have widespread genomic locations partially overlapping with p63

    p53 and p63 are transcription factors -TFs- playing master roles in the DNA-damage response and in the development and maintenance of pluristratified epithelia, respectively. p53 mutations are common in epithelial tumors and HaCaT keratinocytes harbor two p53 alleles -H179Y and R282Q- with gain-of-function (GOF) activity. Indeed, functional inactivation of mutp53 affects the growth rate of HaCaT. We investigated the strategy of mutp53, by performing ChIP-Seq experiments of mutp53 and p63 and analyzed the transcriptome after mutp53 inactivation. Mutp53 bind to 7135 locations in vivo, with a robust overlap with p63. De novo motifs discovery recovered a p53/p63RE with high information content in sites bound by p63 and mutp53/p63, but not by mutp53 alone: these sites are rather enriched in elements of other TFs. The HaCaT p63 locations are only partially overlapping with those of normal keratinocytes; importantly, and enriched in mutp53 sites which delineate a functionally different group of target genes. Our data favour a model whereby mutp53 GOF mutants act both by tethering growth-controlling TFs and highjacking p63 to new locations

    Transcriptional Network of p63 in Human Keratinocytes

    p63 is a transcription factor required for the development and maintenance of ectodermal tissues in general, and skin keratinocytes in particular. The identification of its target genes is fundamental for understanding the complex network of gene regulation governing the development of epithelia. We report a list of almost 1000 targets derived from ChIP on chip analysis on two platforms; all genes analyzed changed in expression during differentiation of human keratinocytes. Functional annotation highlighted unexpected GO terms enrichments and confirmed that genes involved in transcriptional regulation are the most significant. A detailed analysis of these transcriptional regulators in condition of perturbed p63 levels confirmed the role of p63 in the regulatory network. Rather than a rigid master-slave hierarchical model, our data indicate that p63 connects different hubs involved in the multiple specific functions of the skin

    Risk of second primary malignancy in breast cancer survivors: A nested population-based case-control study

    Purpose: Evolving therapies have improved the prognoses of patients with breast cancer; and currently, the number of long-term survivors is continuously increasing. However, these patients are at increased risk of developing a second cancer. Thus, late side effects are becoming an important issue. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether patient and tumor characteristics, and treatment type correlate with secondary tumor risk. Methods: This case-control study included 305 patients with a diagnosed second malignancy after almost 6 months after the diagnosis of primary breast cancer and 1,525 controls (ratio 1:5 of cases to controls) from a population-based cohort of 6,325 women. The control patients were randomly selected from the cohort and matched to the cases according to age at diagnosis, calendar period of diagnosis, disease stage, and time of follow-up. Results: BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)+ status, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy were related to increased risk of developing a second cancer, whereas hormonotherapy showed a protective effect. Chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and estrogenic receptor level <10% increased the risk of controlateral breast cancer. HER2+ status increased the risk of digestive system and thyroid tumors, while BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation increased the risk of cancer in the genital system. Conclusion: Breast cancer survivors are exposed to an excess of risk of developing a second primary cancer. The development of excess of malignancies may be related either to patient and tumor characteristics, such as BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation and HER2+ status, or to treatments factors
