Distance teaching and teaching 'as' distance. A critical reading of online teaching instruments during and after the pandemic
This paper intends to read through a critical lens the digitalization of schooling caused by the COVID-19 epidemic. The emergency has forced European governments to close the schools and consequently, all the schooling activities have been transferred online. Referring to some works of Giorgio Agamben, Paul Virilio and Walter Benjamin the authors propose some critical remarks on the transformation of schooling space and schooling time that characterizes the practice of distance learning. This transformation pertains not only to accidental aspects of schooling but affects the very identity of the schooling experience. In a completely digitalized school, time is characterized by instantaneousness: time as duration is replaced by the "time of exposure", as stated by Paul Virilio. In addition, the school completely dematerialized, is reduced to the two-dimensional space of the screen. The article aims to show that instantaneous time and dematerialized space make the experience of "crossing" difficult. Therefore, following some remarks by Jan Masschelein and Gert Biesta, it is maintained that the experience of "crossing" endangered by the digitalization of schooling is essential to an authentic experience of schooling. It is not intended to refuse the digital innovations as such but to "put them on the table", in order to suspend their immediate use and analyze them critically.

How reliable are Hanle measurements in metals in a three-terminal geometry?
We test the validity of Hanle measurements in three-terminal devices by using
aluminum (Al) and gold (Au). The obtained Hanle and inverted Hanle-like curves
show an anomalous behavior. First, we measure Hanle signals 8 orders of
magnitude larger than those predicted by standard theory. Second, the
temperature and voltage dependences of the signal do not match with the
tunneling spin polarization of the ferromagnetic contact. Finally, the spin
relaxation times obtained with this method are independent of the choice of the
metallic channel. These results are not compatible with spin accumulation in
the metal. Furthermore, a scaling of the Hanle signal with the interface
resistance of the devices suggests that the measured signal is originated in
the tunnel junction.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
Diagnosis of Malaria Infection with or without Disease
The revised W.H.O. guidelines for malaria management in endemic countries recommend that treatment should be reserved to laboratory confirmed cases, both for adults and children. Currently the most widely used tools are rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), that are accurate and reliable in diagnosing malaria infection. However, an infection is not necessarily a clinical malaria, and RDTs may give positive results in febrile patients who have another cause of fever. Excessive reliance on RDTs may cause overlooking potentially severe non malarial febrile illnesses (NMFI) in these cases. In countries or areas where transmission intensity remains very high, fever management in children (especially in the rainy season) should probably remain presumptive, as a test-based management may not be safe, nor cost effective. In contrast, in countries with low transmission, including those targeted for malaria elimination, RDTs are a key resource to limit unnecessary antimalarial prescription and to identify pockets of infected individuals. Research should focus on very sensitive tools for infection on one side, and on improved tools for clinical management on the other, including biomarkers of clinical malaria and/or of alternative causes of fever
Room-temperature air-stable spin transport in bathocuproine-based spin valves
Organic semiconductors, characterized by weak spin-scattering mechanisms, are attractive materials for those spintronic applications in which the spin information needs to be retained for long times. Prototypical spin-valve devices employing organic interlayers sandwiched between ferromagnetic materials possess a figure of merit (magnetoresistance (MR)) comparable to their fully inorganic counterparts. However, these results are a matter of debate as the conductivity of the devices does not show the expected temperature dependence. Here we show spin valves with an interlayer of bathocuproine in which the transport takes place unambiguously through the organic layer and where the electron spin coherence is maintained over large distances (>60 nm) at room temperature. Additionally, the devices show excellent air stability, with MR values almost unaltered after 70 days of storage under ambient conditions, making bathocuproine an interesting material for future spintronic applications.Fil: Sun, Xiangnan. Room-Temperature Spin Transport in C60-Based Spin Valves
Carbon-based spin valves, composed of a C60 layer sandwiched between two magnetic materials show room temperature spin transport for a fullerene thickness up to 30 nm. This result, interpreted by a multistep tunnelling transport model, represents an advance in the field of carbon spintronics.Fil: Gobbi, Marco. CIC nanoGUNE Consolider; EspañaFil: Golmar, Federico. C60-based hot-electron magnetic tunnel transistor
A C 60-based magnetic tunnel transistor is presented. The device is based on the collection of spin-filtered hot-electrons at a metal/C 60 interface, and it allows an accurate measurement of the energy level alignment at such interface. A 89% change in the collected current under the application of a magnetic field demonstrates that these devices can be used as sensitive magnetic field sensors compatible with soft electronics.Fil: Gobbi, M.. Ultrasound and intestinal lesions in Schistosoma mansoni infection: A case-control pilot study outside endemic areas
Infection with Schistosoma mansoni is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in endemic areas, and is increasingly diagnosed in migrants and travellers outside transmission areas. Markers for the assessment of morbidity and impact of control programs in endemic areas and for the clinical management of patients in the clinical setting are scant, especially for intestinal involvement. Ultrasonography is well established to evaluate hepatosplenic pathology; on the contrary, ultrasound evaluation of intestinal schistosomiasis is virtually unexplored. In this pilot study, we aimed to describe and evaluate the accuracy of unenhanced intestinal ultrasound for morbidity due to intestinal S. mansoni infection
