    Succession Planning Effectiveness: A Case Study of UKM

    This quantitative research aimed to determine the effectiveness of succession planning based on the perception of administrative officers (N Scheme) in UKM. Further, the survey research using systematic sampling aimed to examine the relationship and influence of career development, knowledge management practices, and leadership styles (autocratic and democratic) on the effectiveness of the succession planning. The finding shows the majority of the respondents perceived that the succession planning, which has been implemented by UKM, is highly effective. In addition, the respondents also strongly agreed with the activities of knowledge acquisition, knowledge creation and knowledge transfer which have been practicing in UKM, whereas knowledge storage, knowledge sharing, and career developement were perceived moderately by the respondents. The finding also reveals that there is no significant difference between male and female in their perception towards succession planning effectiveness. Besides, there is also no significant difference among the officers Grade N41 to N54 on their perception on the effectiveness of career development and knowledge management practices. Essentially, all predictors of the in this study have no significant correlation with the effectiveness of succession planning. This indicated that there was no significant relationship between the predictors and succession planning effectiveness. In other words, there are other additional predictors that are important in explaining the effectiveness of succession planning h have not been considered in this study. Implications of the findings, suggestions for future studies and recommendations for proactive actions to be taken by Human Resources Division of UKM were also presented

    The current study explored factors affecting behavioral of knowledge transfer and the antecedents predicting this within the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) framework. This study made an attempt to incorporate knowledge transfer-related variables (articulability of knowledge, credibility of knowledge source, gap of theory-practice, embedded knowledge and environmental uncertainty) into the framework. The premise of the model is to provide guideline of necessary conditions that are influential to knowledge transfer behavior in the clinical placement. It is hoped that by holistically understanding and paying closer attention to these predictors, a more comprehensive strategy can be devise beforehand to alleviate any problems that might negatively hinder activities of acquiring and applying new knowledge at the point of clinical placement, which subsequently maximize required clinical experience and in turn increase the levels of clinical competence. The posited model was validated quantitatively using field surveys to one of key stakeholders of clinical placement; the nursing students. An efficient optimization method using PSO for synchronizing torque coefficients Ks and damping torque coefficients Kd to solve angle stability problems was developed and used to identify the angle stability condition on single and multi machine system. In order to accelerate the determination of angle stability, particle swarm optimization (PSO) is proposed to be implemented in this study. The application of the proposed algorithm has been justified as the most accurate with lower computation time as compared to other optimization techniques such as evolutionary programming (EP) and artificial immune system (AIS). Subsequently, a newly control technique named as proportional-integral-derivative (PID) incorporated with flexible AC transmission (FACTS) device is proposed in this study to improve the damping capability of the system. The minimum damping ratio ξmin was applied as an indicator to precisely determine the angle stability condition based on PSO technique.     Halal management system in restaurant operation : Identifying the motivational factors / Nor Ellyna Razali...[et al.]

    Malaysia is known as one of the top Islamic tourism destinations especially among Muslim Middle East tourists. Various services and halal food offered serve as the main attractions. Although foodservice companies today are growing abundantly, the number of Halal certified restaurants is still limited. Hence, the factors that motivates restaurant in obtaining halal certification and implementing halal management system in the foodservice industries need to be explored. Using a qualitative approach, 15 semi-structured interviews were carried out with halal executives, managers or supervisors from halal certified restaurants. The recorded interviews were transcribed, translated and coded for analysis using Atlas.ti version 7 to identify themes and patterns in the data. The finding of this research shows the customer demand, marketing benefits, external support and pressure, top management commitment and product safety and quality are the motivation factors in implementing halal certificate. This study provides a recent view and knowledge on motivation for implementing halal management system in restaurant industries

    Vertical distribution of zooplankton and copepod community structure in the Straits of Malacca.

    Vertical distribution of zooplankton biomass and abundance, copepod taxonomic composition and species diversity were analyzed at eight stations during an oceanographic expedition along the Straits of Malacca. Samples were collected in vertical hauls (140 μm mesh using 45 cm diameter NORPAC net) from four depth strata. Zooplankton biomass was higher at 10-20 m depth in the central and southern parts of the Straits compared to the other depth layers, but the differences were significant (p<0.05) only in the southern part. A total of 96 species of planktonic copepods belonging to 35 genera were identified in the surveyed area. Except for the 10-20 m depth layer in the northern part of the Straits, copepods were the major fraction of the total zooplankton at all depths. In the northern and central parts of the Straits, the deeper layers had higher species diversity indices than in the surface waters, mainly due to higher evenness in the deeper layers. The lower species diversity in the deeper layers of the southern region was attributed to the dominance of a few species

    In this research, a new multiple selection algorithm, which is known as "static range statistical multiple selection algorithm" is proposed. This algorithm is developed based on the statistical knowledge about the uniform distribution nature of the data which has been arranged according to certain order in the file. A global file with n keys is distributed evenly among n peers in the peer-to-peer network. The selection algorithm can performs multiple selections concurrently to find multiple target keys with different predefined target ranks. The algorithm uses a fixed filter approach in which the algorithm is able to make sure that the target key is within certain filter range in each local file. The range is made smaller and smaller as the selection process iterates until all target keys are found. The algorithm is able to reduce the number of messages needed and increases the success rate of all multiple selections in the selection process compared to the previous multiple selection algorithms proposed by Loo in 2005

    Modelling Employers’ Adoption of Assistive Technology in Advancing Employment for Persons with Disabilities

    Employers nowadays should stop worrying about accommodating disabled employees as appropriate assistive technologies (AT) could be adopted that fit with their employees’ limitations and help them work independently. Yet, little consideration is given to examining the adoption of AT by employers for employees with disabilities. As a result, the purpose of this study is to determine how an employer decides to adopt technology for their disabled employees and to look for any significant differences between gender and willingness to hire a disabled worker.This study's survey was conducted among 33 Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Klang Valley, Malaysia. The judgement sampling technique is utilizsed for this study, where the selection of samples will be among the managers, officers or executives in charge of managing the disabled workers. This study has specifically examined the office assistant apps as the particular AT for disabled people that the government supplied to disabled communities (hearing aids, artificial legs, etc.). The result showed a positive and significant relationship between AT Perceived Usefulness and Intention to Adopt AT. In conclusion, this study provides comprehension of the extent of employers' readiness and interest in providing AT for their disabled employees to improve their capabilities

    Internal and external employability of employees: a study among employees in Klang Valley, Malaysia

    The paper aimed at examining factors that influence employees’ employability. Factors that were examined are training supports, interpersonal relationship, amount of training given, the level of job experiences, education level and tenure with current job. Employability is measured using two dimensions; internal and external employability. Pearson correlation tests indicated that training support was positively related to external employability (r = 0.193, p = .001) and internal employability (r = 0.182, p = .002). Interpersonal relationship was found only significantly related to external employability (r = 0.125, p = .022).The relationship with internal employability was insignificant (r = 0.100, p = .054). Amount of training received by employees were both related to internal (r = .251, p= .000) and external employability (r = .167, p = .003). On the other hand, job experiences was only significantly related to internal employability (r =.219, p = .000). Education level and tenure were found only giving significant influence to external employability

    Winter melon (Benincasa hispida), locally known as Kundur, is a vegetable crop, popular, especially among Asian communities both for nutritional and medicinal attributes. In the present work, physicochemical properties of seeds and the extracted seed oils were examined and compared among three cultivars namely round, oval and hybrid of winter melon. The seeds from round, oval and hybrid fruits, exhibited protein, fiber and ash contents 28.18-42.03, 19.36-26.21 and 5.02- 11.81%, respectively. The oils were extracted based on Soxhlet method by petroleum ether, whilst yields ranged from 17.78- 32.53% (wt/wt). The extracted oils were analyzed for physicochemical parameters, and fatty acids, tocopherols and sterols profiles. The results for specific gravity (25°C), refractive index (nD 25°C), iodine value (IV), saponification value (SV), peroxide value (PV), and free fatty acid (% as oleic acid) were 0.89-0.91 g/mL, 1.4627-1.4646, 119.9-125.1 g I/100 g oil, 182.3-194.1 mg KOH/ g oil, 1.13-1.33 mequiv.O2 /kg, 1.57-2.10%, respectively. The oil color intensity in terms of yellow and red units was 6.9Y + 1.0 R to 8.9Y + 1.9R. The amounts of oil tocopherols as analyzed by HPLC varied widely among the cultivars tested showing &#945;-tocopherol 31.1-207.6 mg/kg and &#948;-tocopherol 60.4-146.0 mg/kg. According to the GLC analysis linoleic acid (C18:2) was established to be the principal fatty acid (63.10-70.64%) followed by C16:0 (12.45-17.59), C18:1 (8.46-12.87%) and C18:0 (5.13-7.48%). Analysis of oil sterol fractions, using GC and GC-MS, revealed the presence of &#946;-sitosterol (54.62–60.50%), campesterol (15.10–18.50%), stigmasterol (11.00–14.30% and &#916; 5 -avenasterol (6.40–8.14 %) as the four main components. Most of the properties of the seed oils analyzed varied significantly among fruit cultivars tested. Overall, we concluded that the seeds, which are under-utilized and often discarded as an agrowate, from winter melon should be explored for extraction of high-linoleic oil with additional tocopherols and phytosterol benefits
