Intellectual Freedom, Cultural Exchange, and Nazi Germany: The Relationship Between the Deutsch-Ausländischer Buchtausch, University of Denver, and Other Cultural Heritage Institutions

    Get PDF
Shortly after Hitler’s rise to power, the Prussian State Library was restructured, birthing a new entity – the Deutsch-Ausländischer Buchtausch (German Foreign Book Exchange, DAB). The DAB was responsible for exchanging books and serials with scholarly institutions worldwide. In 1936, the University of Denver (DU) received a gift of books from the DAB. Nearly fifty percent of the books would be categorized as Nazi propaganda or eugenics literature by current standards. Upon further research, it was discovered that the DAB’s relationships included Stanford, Yale, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Royal Historical Society, the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, the Institut d\u27Égypte, the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies, the University of Bombay, and the countries of Spain and Portugal. This paper provides a detailed review of the DAB-DU case, an examination of the DAB, and reviews of DAB exchanges

Convex Constraint Decomposition of Circular Dichroism Curves of Proteins

    Get PDF
A new algorithm, called convex analysis, has been developed to deduce the chiral contribution of the common secondary structures directly from experimental circular dichroism (CD) curves of a large number of proteins. The analysis is based on CD data reported by Yang et aU Test runs were performed on sets of artificial protein spectra created by the Monte Carlo technique using poly-u-Iysine based component spectra. Application of the decomposition algorithm for the created sets of spectra resulted in component spectra [B (2, i)] and weights [C (i, k)] with excellent Pearson correlation coefficients (r).2 The algori thm, independent of X-ray data, revealed that the CD spectrum of a given protein is composed of at least four independent sources of chirality. Three of the computed component curves show remarkable resemblance to the CD spectra of known protein secondary structures. This approach yields a significant improvement compared to the eigenvector analysis of Hennessey and Johnson." The new method is a useful tool not only in analyzing CD spectra but also in treating other decomposition problems where an additivity constraint is valid

Thesis (S.B.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Mechanical Engineering, 2013.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis. "June 2013."Includes bibliographical references (page 27).Using conventional underarm or forearm crutches is uncomfortable and awkward. Further, underarm crutches make climbing stairs difficult and unsafe. One may climb stairs with forearm crutches, which do not impede elbow movement, but doing so is fatiguing and requires upper body strength. In 2011, MIT Media Lab researcher Madalyn Berns demonstrated that incorporating into the crutch an elastic element that spans the elbow joint could reduce the metabolic cost of crutching up stairs. The elastic element stores energy when compressed by the biceps; the stored energy then aids the triceps in levering the user up the stairs. This thesis developed a safer, sleeker, and more comfortable spring-integrated crutch. The novel design uses a torsion spring to store energy during elbow flexion. The spring is compressed between a forearm cuff and an upper arm cuff. The design allows the patient to reduce metabolic cost by using upper arm muscles more effectively.by Jennifer B. Fasman.S.B

In an investigation of the factors operative in the urease-catalyzed hydrolysis of urea in aqueous solutions, buffered at pH 7.0 with sodium or potassium phosphate, it has been found that both of the buffer components participate in the hydrolytic reaction. The buffer anion apparently functions as an activator and the buffer cation as an inhibitor. Sodium phosphate buffer displays a greater inhibitory action in the urease-catalyzed hydrolysis of urea than does an equivalent concentration of potassium phosphate buffer. After dialysis of urease solutions the activity in the presence of organic-inorganic buffers, e.g., ethylenedianine phosphate, was found to be greater than that of the initial preparation. The order of activation of the enzyme for the investigated anions as their ehtylenedianine salts is citrate > phosphate > maleate > sulphate > chloride > acetate. The activity of the enzyme increases with increased concentrations of these buffers. Attempted purifications of three samples of adrenocorticotropic hormone, RN 145, RN 146 and RN 147, resulted in the following conclusions. Paper chromatography revealed three components in RN 145, two in RN 146 with a possible third; and three in RN 147 with a possible fourth. Further work on sample RN 147 indicated five moieties by electrophoresis on paper, five with a possible sixth by dinitrophenylation and chromatography and a separation into five components by dialysis and fractional ammonium sulphate precipitation. The machine built for Instrumental Adsorption Analysis at the California Institute of Technology was put into operation. Successful separations of fatty acid mixtures and an isomeric cis-trans mixture were achieved. Attempted resolution of the adrenocorticotropic hormone indicated non-homogeneity. The administration of diphenyl hydantoin (dilantin) in a dose of fifty milligrams per kilogram bodyweight was observed to potentiate the narcotic effect of ether. It caused a forty percent decrease in blood ether concentration necessary to suppress the knee jerk of the cat. This supports the thesis that the depolarizing effects of ether and diphenyl hydantoin are additive and that depolarization is an important factor in the narcotic effect of ether on central conduction.</p

Biomacromolecular stereostructure mediates mode hybridization in chiral plasmonic nanostructures

The refractive index sensitivity of plasmonic fields has been exploited for over 20 years in analytical technologies. While this sensitivity can be used to achieve attomole detection levels, they are in essence binary measurements that sense the presence/absence of a predetermined analyte. Using plasmonic fields, not to sense effective refractive indices but to provide more “granular” information about the structural characteristics of a medium, provides a more information rich output, which affords opportunities to create new powerful and flexible sensing technologies not limited by the need to synthesize chemical recognition elements. Here we report a new plasmonic phenomenon that is sensitive to the biomacromolecular structure without relying on measuring effective refractive indices. Chiral biomaterials mediate the hybridization of electric and magnetic modes of a chiral solid-inverse plasmonic structure, resulting in a measurable change in both reflectivity and chiroptical properties. The phenomenon originates from the electric-dipole–magnetic-dipole response of the biomaterial and is hence sensitive to biomacromolecular secondary structure providing unique fingerprints of α-helical, β-sheet, and disordered motifs. The phenomenon can be observed for subchiral plasmonic fields (i.e., fields with a lower chiral asymmetry than circularly polarized light) hence lifting constraints to engineer structures that produce fields with enhanced chirality, thus providing greater flexibility in nanostructure design. To demonstrate the efficacy of the phenomenon, we have detected and characterized picogram quantities of simple model helical biopolymers and more complex real proteins

The Genetic Code as a Periodic Table: Algebraic Aspects

    Get PDF
The systematics of indices of physico-chemical properties of codons and amino acids across the genetic code are examined. Using a simple numerical labelling scheme for nucleic acid bases, data can be fitted as low-order polynomials of the 6 coordinates in the 64-dimensional codon weight space. The work confirms and extends recent studies by Siemion of amino acid conformational parameters. The connections between the present work, and recent studies of the genetic code structure using dynamical symmetry algebras, are pointed out.Comment: 26 pages Latex, 10 figures (4 ps, 6 Tex).
