    Optimising Networks For Ultra-High Definition Video

    The increase in real-time ultra-high definition video services is a challenging issue for current network infrastructures. The high bitrate traffic generated by ultra-high definition content reduces the effectiveness of current live video distribution systems. Transcoders and application layer multicasting (ALM) can reduce traffic in a video delivery system, but they are limited due to the static nature of their implementations. To overcome the restrictions of current static video delivery systems, an OpenFlow based migration system is proposed. This system enables an almost seamless migration of a transcoder or ALM node, while delivering real-time ultra-high definition content. Further to this, a novel heuristic algorithm is presented to optimise control of the migration events and destination. The combination of the migration system and heuristic algorithm provides an improved video delivery system, capable of migrating resources during operation with minimal disruption to clients. With the rise in popularity of consumer based live streaming, it is necessary to develop and improve architectures that can support these new types of applications. Current architectures introduce a large delay to video streams, which presents issues for certain applications. In order to overcome this, an improved infrastructure for delivering real-time streams is also presented. The proposed system uses OpenFlow within a content delivery network (CDN) architecture, in order to improve several aspects of current CDNs. Aside from the reduction in stream delay, other improvements include switch level multicasting to reduce duplicate traffic and smart load balancing for server resources. Furthermore, a novel max-flow algorithm is also presented. This algorithm aims to optimise traffic within a system such as the proposed OpenFlow CDN, with the focus on distributing traffic across the network, in order to reduce the probability of blocking

    Breakfast skipping is associated with cyberbullying and school bullying victimization:a school-based cross-sectional study

    Breakfast skipping is a health concern that has well-known negative consequences physically and psychologically. It is therefore important to understand why children skip breakfast. The purpose of this study was to establish whether the experience of bullying and cyberbullying impacts upon breakfast skipping and to further evaluate whether the inability for youths to cope with bullying victimization affects their mental health (depression), and in turn predicts breakfast skipping. Data were obtained from the Eastern Ontario 2011 Youth Risk Behaviour Survey, a cross-sectional regional school-based survey of middle and high school students (11-20 years old) across the five counties of Eastern Ontario, Canada (N = 3035). Self-reported data about children's experiences of bullying victimization, breakfast eating habits, socio-economical status, depression, and other risk behaviours were analysed. Approximately half of the participants (50.4%) reported not eating breakfast on a regular basis: 26.3% and 24.1% reported often (usually eat breakfast three times or more per week) and frequent (usually eat breakfast twice a week or less) breakfast skipping behaviour, respectively. Victims of both cyberbullying and school bullying presented greater likelihood of often (adjusted relative risk ratio (RR) = 1.55; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.17-2.06) and frequent (RR = 1.97; 95% CI = 1.28-3.03) breakfast skipping. Mediation analysis further showed that depression fully mediated the relationship between school bullying victimization and frequent breakfast skipping. Moreover, depression partially mediated the associations between both cyberbullying and school bullying with frequent breakfast skipping. These findings highlight the potential interrelationships between cyberbullying, school bullying and depression in predicting unhealthy breakfast skipping behaviour in children. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd

    The neural correlates of regulating another person's emotions: an exploratory fMRI study

    Studies investigating the neurophysiological basis of intrapersonal emotion regulation (control of one's own emotional experience) report that the frontal cortex exerts a modulatory effect on limbic structures such as the amygdala and insula. However, no imaging study to date has examined the neurophysiological processes involved in interpersonal emotion regulation, where the goal is explicitly to regulate another person's emotion. Twenty healthy participants (10 males) underwent fMRI while regulating their own or another person's emotions. Intrapersonal and interpersonal emotion regulation tasks recruited an overlapping network of brain regions including bilateral lateral frontal cortex, pre-supplementary motor area, and left temporo-parietal junction. Activations unique to the interpersonal condition suggest that both affective (emotional simulation) and cognitive (mentalizing) aspects of empathy may be involved in the process of interpersonal emotion regulation. These findings provide an initial insight into the neural correlates of regulating another person's emotions and may be relevant to understanding mental health issues that involve problems with social interaction

    Embedded-Cluster Calculations in a Numeric Atomic Orbital Density-Functional Theory Framework

    We integrate the all-electron electronic structure code FHI-aims into the general ChemShell package for solid-state embedding (QM/MM) calculations. A major undertaking in this integration is the implementation of pseudopotential functionality into FHI-aims to describe cations at the QM/MM boundary through effective core potentials and therewith prevent spurious overpolarization of the electronic density. Based on numeric atomic orbital basis sets, FHI-aims offers particularly efficient access to exact exchange and second order perturbation theory, rendering the established QM/MM setup an ideal tool for hybrid and double-hybrid level DFT calculations of solid systems. We illustrate this capability by calculating the reduction potential of Fe in the Fe-substituted ZSM-5 zeolitic framework and the reaction energy profile for (photo-)catalytic water oxidation at TiO2(110).Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure

    Testing annual asthma reviews for those who fail to attend: proof-of-concept study

    Introduction: Suboptimal asthma care is related to increased morbidity and mortality. As a result, GP surgeries provide annual reviews for people with asthma. A high proportion of asthma patients do not attend their review but still collect asthma treatment from their community pharmacy. The aim of this proof-of-concept study was to evaluate the provision of patient non-attendance lists to community pharmacies who subsequently offered the review Method: Five GP surgeries and ten community pharmacies were recruited in the east of England. Non-attender details were provided to community pharmacies from GP surgeries directly over a six-month period. Asthma reviews, funded by the medicines use review scheme, were delivered using standardised methodological approaches and electronic recording systems. Relevant routinely collected data were obtained before and after service provision. Stakeholder meetings were held to obtain feedback after service completion. Results: A total of 27 patients received the service, with data collected on 26 patients. High levels of satisfaction with the service were identified. Pharmacist training, pharmacy accessibility and pharmacist competence were seen as service enablers. The pharmacy consultation room, GP surgery organisation and different IT systems were seen as barriers. A high level of satisfaction was identified, with the recommendation that the service should be offered to all patients with asthma irrespective of attendance. Discussion and conclusion: This service model, which involved integrated working between GPs and community pharmacies and enabled asthma review non-attenders to be targeted, is in line with the recommendations of the Murray Review. Stakeholders recommended that community pharmacists should provide yearly asthma reviews and that these should be performed in close collaboration with GP surgeries

    Supervoid Origin of the Cold Spot in the Cosmic Microwave Background

    We use a WISE-2MASS-Pan-STARRS1 galaxy catalog to search for a supervoid in the direction of the Cosmic Microwave Background Cold Spot. We obtain photometric redshifts using our multicolor data set to create a tomographic map of the galaxy distribution. The radial density profile centred on the Cold Spot shows a large low density region, extending over 10's of degrees. Motivated by previous Cosmic Microwave Background results, we test for underdensities within two angular radii, 55^\circ, and 1515^\circ. Our data, combined with an earlier measurement by Granett et al 2010, are consistent with a large Rvoid=(192±15)h1MpcR_{\rm void}=(192 \pm 15)h^{-1} Mpc (2σ)(2\sigma) supervoid with δ0.13±0.03\delta \simeq -0.13 \pm 0.03 centered at z=0.22±0.01z=0.22\pm0.01. Such a supervoid, constituting a 3.5σ\sim3.5 \sigma fluctuation in the ΛCDM\Lambda CDM model, is a plausible cause for the Cold Spot.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, Proceedings of IAU 306 Symposium: Statistical Challenges in 21st Century Cosmolog
