Spending Millions to Save Billions: The Campaign of the Super Wealthy to Kill the Estate Tax
The multimillion-dollar lobbying effort to repeal the federal estate tax has been aggressively led by 18 super-wealthy families, according this report by Public Citizen and United for a Fair Economy. The report details for the first time the vast money, influence and deceptive marketing techniques behind the rhetoric in the campaign to repeal the tax.It reveals how 18 families worth a total of 71.6 billion.The report profiles the families and their businesses, which include the families behind Wal-Mart, Gallo wine, Campbell's soup, and Mars Inc., maker of M&Ms. Collectively, the list includes the first- and third-largest privately held companies in the United States, the richest family in Alabama and the world's largest retailer.These families have sought to keep their activities anonymous by using associations to represent them and by forming a massive coalition of business and trade associations dedicated to pushing for estate tax repeal. The report details the groups they have hidden behind -- the trade associations they have used, the lobbyists they have hired, and the anti-estate tax political action committees, 527s and organizations to which they have donated heavily.In a massive public relations campaign, the families have also misled the country by giving the mistaken impression that the estate tax affects most Americans. In particular, they have used small businesses and family farms as poster children for repeal, saying that the estate tax destroys both of these groups. But just more than one-fourth of one percent of all estates will owe any estate taxes in 2006. And the American Farm Bureau, a member of the anti-estate tax coalition, was unable when asked by The New York Times to cite a single example of a family being forced to sell its farm because of estate tax liability

Racial Microaggressions within the Field of Nursing
Racial microaggressions (RM) have transitioned into a subtle form of contemporary racism and are potentially involved within our communication as healthcare providers. Though cultural competency is addressed within nursing education, this RM phenomenon continues to happen in everyday discourse and can occur with little or no awareness on the part of Caucasians. The aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of how RMs against African Americans exist within the field of nursing and how their underlying discrimination increases the marginalization of this community. A detailed search was conducted using CINAHL, PsycInfo and ProQuest databases using the keywords: racial microaggressions, subtle racism, African Americans, nursing, health disparities, health outcomes, healthcare, cultural competency. Peer-reviewed studies written in English and published between 2008 to 2017 were considered. This review discusses the chronic presence of RMs against the African American population and identified the defining characteristics of RM within the nursing literature. Their effect on the marginalization of this community was organized into two major pathways of stress suffered by the individual: psychological stress and biological stress. RMs within an institutionalized healthcare system were associated with decreased level of care and ultimately contribute to the ongoing health disparities suffered on the part by the African American population

Superconductivity Solves the Monopole Problem for Alice Strings
Alice strings are cosmic strings that turn matter into antimatter. Although
they arise naturally in many GUT's, it has long been believed that because of
the monopole problem they can have no cosmological effects. We show this
conclusion to be false; by using the Langacker-Pi mechanism, monopoles can in
fact be annihilated while Alice strings are left intact. This opens up the
possibility that they can after all contribute to cosmology, and we mention

Consideration of the carrier-based tactical support center design
This joint thesis analyzes the carrier-based Tactical
Support Center (CV-TSC) design from a human factors engineering
viewpoint. Beginning with the ASW threat to the carrier
force under the CV concept, a definition of the mission of
the CV/TSC is presented. System functions are identified
and developed into man-machine relationships of the CV/TSC.
A comprehensive, albeit general, description of TSC
components is included as part of the system analysis.
Man's role, functions and tasks in the CV/TSC are identified
and form the basis for alternatives to the current TSC

A Modular Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) System for Gait Assistance in Pediatric Cerebral Palsy
Foot drop, the inability to lift the forefoot during gait, is a common symptom of disorders such as diabetes, stroke, spina bifida, and cerebral palsy. This condition makes walking difficult and unsafe, often resulting in stumbles and falls due to lack of ground clearance. The current standard of care is orthotic bracing, which presents donning and doffing challenges, restricts ankle motion, and contributes to social stigma in many parts of the world. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is an alternative approach which uses small amounts of electrical current delivered through skin-surface electrodes to stimulate peripheral nerves, thus generating muscle contraction and ultimately functional movement of a human limb. When packaged in a wearable device with onboard sensors capable of detecting gait phase, stimulation current can be applied to the lower leg to cause the foot to lift during the swing phase of gait. While several FES foot-drop systems are commercially available, they cost upward of $13,000 and provide a level of adjustability and complexity not needed for many conditions. The Messiah FES team is working to develop a low-cost, portable, easy-to-use, and durable electrical stimulation device to restore legged ambulation to children with mobility impairments resulting from cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and other conditions with similar effects. Superdeformation in Po
The Yb(Si,5n) reaction at 148 MeV with thin targets was used
to populate high-angular momentum states in Po. Resulting rays
were observed with Gammasphere. A weakly-populated superdeformed band of 10
-ray transitions was found and has been assigned to Po. This is
the first observation of a SD band in the region in a nucleus
with . The of the new band is very similar to those of
the yrast SD bands in Hg and Pb. The intensity profile suggests
that this band is populated through states close to where the SD band crosses

Automated simultaneous analysis phylogenetics (ASAP) : an enabling tool for phlyogenomics

The definitive version was published in BMC Bioinformatics 9 (2008): 103, doi:10.1186/1471-2105-9-103.The availability of sequences from whole genomes to reconstruct the tree of life has the potential to enable the development of phylogenomic hypotheses in ways that have not been before possible. A significant bottleneck in the analysis of genomic-scale views of the tree of life is the time required for manual curation of genomic data into multi-gene phylogenetic matrices.
To keep pace with the exponentially growing volume of molecular data in the genomic era, we have developed an automated technique, ASAP (Automated Simultaneous Analysis Phylogenetics), to assemble these multigene/multi species matrices and to evaluate the significance of individual genes within the context of a given phylogenetic hypothesis.
