Anti-CTLA-4 (CD 152) monoclonal antibody-induced autoimmune interstitial nephritis
Targeted immune-modulating agents are entering clinical practice in many specialties, providing novel therapeutic possibilities but introducing new potential toxicities. We present the first reported case, to our knowledge, of immune-mediated nephritis following the administration of Tremelimumab (CP-675, 206), an anti-cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen 4 (CTLA-4) monoclonal antibody. High-dose steroid therapy led to a rapid improvement in renal function, avoiding the need for renal replacement therapy.Peer reviewe
Angular Diameters of the G Subdwarf Cassiopeiae A and the K Dwarfs Draconis and HR 511 from Interferometric Measurements with the CHARA Array
Using the longest baselines of the CHARA Array, we have measured the angular
diameter of the G5 V subdwarf Cas A, the first such determination for a
halo population star. We compare this result to new diameters for the higher
metallicity K0 V stars, Dra and HR 511, and find that the metal-poor
star, Cas A, has an effective temperature ( K),
radius (), and absolute luminosity
() comparable to the other two stars with later
spectral types. We show that stellar models show a discrepancy in the predicted
temperature and radius for Cas A, and we discuss these results and how
they provide a key to understanding the fundamental relationships for stars

Flexible modelling of vaccine effect in self-controlled case series models
The self-controlled case-series method (SCCS), commonly used to investigate the safety of vaccines, requires information on cases only and automatically controls all age-independent multiplicative confounders, while allowing for an age dependent baseline incidence.
Currently the SCCS method represents the time-varying exposures using step functions with pre-determined cut-points. A less prescriptive approach may be beneficial when the shape of the relative risk function associated with exposure is not known a priori, especially when exposure effects can be long-lasting. We therefore propose to model exposure effects using flexible smooth functions. Specifically, we used a linear combination of cubic M-splines which, in addition to giving plausible shapes, avoids the integral in the log-likelihood function of the SCCS model. The methods, though developed specifically for vaccines, are applicable more widely. Simulations showed that the new approach generally performs better than the step function method. A longitudinal analysis of the criminal careers of IPV offender subtypes : results from a prospective survey of males
Using data from the Cambridge Study in Delinquent Development, a prospective longitudinal survey of more than 400 males in the United Kingdom followed from age 8 years to age 48 years, we investigated the role of Cluster B personality traits and the association with violent offending groups based on a typology theory of male intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrators: those who committed family-only violence and the generally violent offender. We also considered whether offending/violent groups could be predicted using risk factors measured in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Our findings suggest that those men who are violent both within and outside the home (the generally violent men) are distinguished from those who are involved in IPV within the home only. The differences appear to be more in degree than in kind. We discuss these findings in relation to the idea of specific interventions and policy
Host Star Properties And Transit Exclusion For The HD 38529 Planetary System
The transit signature of exoplanets provides an avenue through which characterization of exoplanetary properties may be undertaken, such as studies of mean density, structure, and atmospheric composition. The Transit Ephemeris Refinement and Monitoring Survey is a program to expand the catalog of transiting planets around bright host stars by refining the orbits of known planets discovered with the radial velocity technique. Here we present results for the HD 38529 system. We determine fundamental properties of the host star through direct interferometric measurements of the radius and through spectroscopic analysis. We provide new radial velocity measurements that are used to improve the Keplerian solution for the two known planets, and we find no evidence for a previously postulated third planet. We also present 12 years of precision robotic photometry of HD 38529 that demonstrate the inner planet does not transit and the host star exhibits cyclic variations in seasonal mean brightness with a timescale of approximately six years
An interferometric study of the post-AGB binary 89 Herculis I Spatially resolving the continuum circumstellar environment at optical and near-IR wavelengths with the VLTI, NPOI, IOTA, PTI, and the CHARA Array
Binary post-AGB stars are interesting laboratories to study both the
evolution of binaries as well as the structure of circumstellar disks. A
multiwavelength high angular resolution study of the prototypical object 89
Herculis is performed with the aim of identifying and locating the different
emission components seen in the SED. A large interferometric data set,
collected over the past decade and covering optical and near-IR wavelengths, is
analyzed with simple geometric models. Combining the interferometric
constraints with the photometry and the optical spectra, we reassess the energy
budget of the post-AGB star and its circumstellar environment. We report the
first (direct) detection of a large (35-40%) optical circumstellar flux
contribution and spatially resolve its emission region. Given this large amount
of reprocessed and/or redistributed optical light, the fitted size of the
emission region is rather compact and fits with(in) the inner rim of the
circumbinary dust disk. This rim dominates our K band data through thermal
emission and is rather compact, emitting significantly already at a radius of
twice the orbital separation. We interpret the circumstellar optical flux as
due to a scattering process, with the scatterers located in the extremely
puffed-up inner rim of the disk and possibly also in a bipolar outflow seen
pole-on. A non-LTE gaseous origin in an inner disk cannot be excluded but is
considered highly unlikely. This direct detection of a significant amount of
circumbinary light at optical wavelengths poses several significant questions
regarding our understanding of both post-AGB binaries and the physics in their
circumbinary disks. Although the identification of the source of
emission/scattering remains inconclusive without further study on this and

Vehicle Ancillary Load Reduction Project Close-Out Report: An Overview of the Task and a Compilation of the Research Results
The amount of fuel used for climate control in U.S. vehicles reduces the fuel economy of more than 200 million light-duty conventional vehicles and thus affects U.S. energy security. Researchers at the DOE National Renewable Energy Laboratory estimated that the United States consumes about 7 billion gallons of fuel per year for air-conditioning (A/C) light-duty vehicles. Using a variety of tools, NREL researchers developed innovative techniques and technologies to reduce the amount of fuel needed for these vehicles' ancillary loads. For example, they found that the A/C cooling capacity of 5.7 kW in a Cadillac STS could be reduced by 30% while maintaining a cooldown performance of 30 minutes. A simulation showed that reducing the A/C load by 30% decreased A/C fuel consumption by 26%. Other simulations supported the great potential for improving fuel economy by using new technologies and techniques developed to reduce ancillary loads
