    Combining Physical galaxy models with radio observations to constrain the SFRs of high-z dusty star forming galaxies

    We complement our previous analysis of a sample of z~1-2 luminous and ultra-luminous infrared galaxies ((U)LIRGs), by adding deep VLA radio observations at 1.4 GHz to a large data-set from the far-UV to the sub-mm, including Spitzer and Herschel data. Given the relatively small number of (U)LIRGs in our sample with high S/N radio data, and to extend our study to a different family of galaxies, we also include 6 well sampled near IR-selected BzK galaxies at z~1.5. From our analysis based on the radiative transfer spectral synthesis code GRASIL, we find that, while the IR luminosity may be a biased tracer of the star formation rate (SFR) depending on the age of stars dominating the dust heating, the inclusion of the radio flux offers significantly tighter constraints on SFR. Our predicted SFRs are in good agreement with the estimates based on rest-frame radio luminosity and the Bell (2003) calibration. The extensive spectro-photometric coverage of our sample allows us to set important constraints on the SF history of individual objects. For essentially all galaxies we find evidence for a rather continuous SFR and a peak epoch of SF preceding that of the observation by a few Gyrs. This seems to correspond to a formation redshift of z~5-6. We finally show that our physical analysis may affect the interpretation of the SFR-M* diagram, by possibly shifting, with respect to previous works, the position of the most dust obscured objects to higher M* and lower SFRs.Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS on Dec. 4th, 201

    ISOKINETIC STRENGTH CHARACTERISTICS OF FOUR DIFFERENT EVENT ATHLETES

    The purpose of this study was to analysize characteristics of isokinetic strengths of knee joint among the athletes from four events and to study isokinetic factors of knee joint which have most profound influences on separating the athletes from different events. Sixty one college male athletes from football, karate, water sport and track and field served as subjects in this study. An isokinetic dynamometer (Cybex 11 6000, Lumex, Inc.) was employed to measure strength of both extensors and flexors at the knee joint of dominant side at angular velocities of 60, 180, 300, 400 and 500 deg/sec for concentric contraction. The Digitest 1000 (Ergojump Bosco Sys-tem) were used to test squad jump- and counter movement vertical jump. ANOVA following by Tukey-HSD post-hoc test, Pearson Correlation, and Discriminant Analysis were employed for statistical analysis. PTBW- peak torque of body weight % in this study shows a trend that the strength of knee extensors and flexors decrease obviously as the velocities of movement (shortening velocity of the muscles) in-crease. There exist significant differences (Pe0.01) of PTEBWs-peak torques of ex- tensor of body weight %, and PTFBWs-peak torques of flexor of body weight % between four groups. In PTEBWs, track and field group has the highest percent- ages in all different velocities from 60 to 500 deg/s, which indicates that athletes of this group have the strongest relative ex- tensor strength comparing with other three groups. Nevertheless, there is the smallest decreasing percentage in athletes group 45.06% in PTEBW when the velocity increases from 60 to 300 deg/s, the decreasing rates of other three groups are larger than that of track and field group, 46.16% for karate, 47.02% for soccer and 48.35% for water sport. It is concluded that track and field group has the best perform- ance of knee extensors as the speed of movement increases among four group players. PTRs of athletes and soccer players are significantly larger than those of karate and water sport groups as the velocities increase. Which indicates that track and field and soccer groups maintain a better balance between knee flexors and extensors than water sport and karate group do. Correlation analysis also shows there are significant correlation between the performance of the two field tests and isokinetic variables. The result of discriminant analysis in this study shows that PTEBW5OO-peak torque of body weight % at 500 degls and PTR18O-peak torque ratio of flexors/extensors at 180 deg/s are the two most important isokinetic variables in separating the four groups. The characteristics underlying performance in these two isokinetic variables included are the same characteristics underlying performance in those isokinetic variables not included in discriminate functions

    Effect of Feathers as Nest Insulation on Incubation Behavior and Reproductive Performance of Tree Swallows (\u3cem\u3eTachycineta bicolor\u3c/em\u3e)

    Many species of birds line their nests with feathers, presumably because of the insulative qualities of feathers and because feathers may act as a barrier between nest parasites and nestlings. In 1993, we experimentally examined the role of feathers as nest insulation on the incubation behavior, nestling growth, and reproductive performance of Tree Swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) nesting in boxes in western Michigan. There were no significant differences between the incubation rhythms of females with experimental nests (i.e. no feathers) and females with control nests (i.e. with feathers). Nestlings that were reared in control nests had significantly longer right tarsi and right wing chords; their masses were significantly greater than nestlings reared in experimental nests. In addition, nested analyses of variance indicated that both female age class (i.e. second year, after second year, or after hatching year) and the brood within which a nestling was reared had significant effects on nestling growth until nestling day 12. Whether an individual nestling was infected with ectoparasites was independent of whether it was reared in an experimental or control nest. Nest insulation affected reproductive performance: females with experimental nests had significantly longer incubation periods and produced significantly fewer fledglings than did females with control nests. These results suggest that nest insulation may be an important factor influencing incubation behavior, nestling growth, and reproductive performance of Tree Swallows in western Michigan

    Antimicrobial Protein Produced by Vaginal Lactobacillus acidophilus that inhibits Gardnerella vaginalis

    Objective: To isolate bacteriocin from a vaginal strain of Lactobacillus acidophilus. Methods: L. acidophilus 160 was grown on two media. The first was MRS broth for 18 hours; the cells were harvested, washed, and placed into a chemically defined medium. The second medium resembled vaginal fluid minus protein. Bacteriocin was precipitated from both media using ammonium sulfate. The growth-inhibiting activity of bacteriocin was determined by a bioassay using nine different isolates of Gardnerella vaginalis. Results: MRS broth is not a suitable medium for extracting bacteriocin, because it binds with Tween 80. Bacteriocin was isolated, without contaminating constituents, from chemically defined medium and identified as a single band by electrophoresis. Bacteriocin has a molecular weight of 3.8 kDa. All nine isolates of Gardnerella were inhibited by the bacteriocin isolated from L. acidophilus 160. Conclusions: Bacteriocin produced by L. acidophilus 160 was isolated from the chemically defined medium (starvation medium) in a partially pure form. L. acidophilus 160 bacteriocin inhibited growth of all nine isolates of Gardnerella vaginalis

    KlNESlOLOGlCAL ANALYSIS OF OVERARM THROWING FOR ACCURACY WITH DOMINANT AND NON-DOMINANT ARMS

    The main aim of this study was to examine differences kinematically between dominant and non-dominant overarm throws for accuracy. Fourty-nine right-handed primaly school students served as the subjects who were requested to make overarm throws with dominant and non-dominant arms. A three-dimensional Motion Analysis System was used to collect all kinematic data of overarm throwing while performance errors were recorded by a video camera. Performance errors and kinematic variables of right and lefl hands were compaired with Paired t-test and the relation among performance errors and kinematic variables was evaluated with canonical correlation. It was found that significant differences in the accuracy existed between dominant and non-dominant overarm throws. The dominant hand shows much better throwing performance in terms of accuracy. Kinematic analysis also indicated that there were significant differences in velocity and acceleration even though there was a great similarity in the timing of velocity and acceleration in overarm throws for accuracy

    One of the outstanding aims of most liberation movements has been to increase the economic well-being of their people, Guinea-Bissau being no exception in this respect. How far has the new Nation State succeeded in fulfilling this aim? A comparative analysis of the implementation of land reclamation projects during colonial and post-colonial times reveals astonishing similarities: especially the centralization of development efforts in the hands of administrators disconnected from the grassroots, lack of target group analysis and misconceptions about the aims and needs, as well as the resources, of the population involved in the development efforts, on the part of the administration. The effects of this negative conditioning process of 'development' over many years on the chances of cooperation between peasants and the administration are still largely unknown. Any development planner who wants to encourage the local population to take their future into their own hands, would have to take account of this negative conditioning process

    Antibiotic resistance patterns of group B streptococcal clinical isolates.

    OBJECTIVES: To determine the in vitro resistance of group B streptococcus (GBS) to 12 antibiotics. To determine if there has been any decrease in sensitivity to the penicillins or other antibiotics currently used for GBS chemoprophylaxis in pregnant women. Find suitable alternative antibiotics to penicillin. Find an antibiotic that will have minimal selective pressure for resistance among the endogenous resident vaginal microflora. METHODS: The antibiotic susceptibility profiles of 52 clinical isolates of GBS were evaluated to 12 antibiotics: ampicillin, azithromycin, cefamandole, cefazolin, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, erythromycin, nitrofurantoin, ofloxacin, penicillin and vancomycin. Antibiotic sensitivities were determined using disk diffusion and microdilution methods according to the guidelines of the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS). RESULTS: All isolates were sensitive to vancomycin, ofloxacin, ampicillin, ciprofloxacin, nitrofurantoin and penicillin. However, the following number of clinical isolates exhibited intermediate or decreased sensitivity, nine (17%) to ampicillin, eight (15%) to penicillin, 14 (32%) to ciprofloxacin and one (2%) to nitrofurantoin. Thirty-one percent of the isolates were resistant to azithromycin and ceftriaxone, 19% to clindamycin, 15% to cefazolin and 13% to cefamandole. Eighteen (35%) of the clinical isolates tested were resistant to 6 of the 12 antibiotics tested. CONCLUSIONS: The relatively high rates of resistance for 6 of the 12 antibiotics tested suggest that for women allergic to penicillin and colonized with GBS, antibiotic sensitivities to their isolates should be determined. The antibiotic selected for intrapartum chemoprophylaxis should be guided by the organism's antibiotic sensitivity pattern. Patients with GBS bacteriuria should be treated with nitrofurantoin
