    Just Chill! An experimental approach to stereotypical attributions regarding young activists

    Climate change is a crucial issue, which is mobilized by activists. However, activists are targeted with negative stereotypes, hindering their influence. Young activists are environmentally conscious, but the stereotypical attributions assigned to them are unknown, with competing predictions in the literature (for being activist vs being young). In two studies, we aimed at experimentally examining the stereotypical dimensions that are ascribed to activists (youth vs adult) based on the Stereotype Content Model (SCM), as well as a morality/trustworthiness dimension. Considering that activists are generally considered as high-competent, but low-warm, while youth are considered the opposite (low-competence and high-warmth), we hypothesized the impacts on morality/trustworthiness. Greta Thunberg and Jane Fonda were the personalities used in Study 1 (N = 276), randomly assigned to participants while keeping the same discourse excerpt. Thunberg was penalized in all stereotypical dimensions. In Study 2 (N = 228), fictional characters (teenager or adult) were used instead. As hypothesized, no differences were found in the warmth or competence dimensions, only in the morality/trustworthiness dimension, penalizing the young activist. These results highlight the importance of studying environmental activists considering different social categories in stereotypical appraisals. They also contribute to a better understanding of general resistance towards activists, as well as the factors that are detrimental to their social influence.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Ultra light vertical array remote data acquisition system

    SiPLAB Report 03/05, FCT, University of Algarve,2005.In the framework of the ATOMS project, a project devoted to study uppwelling processes off the S. Vicente Cape, Portugal, by oceanographic and acoustic means, it was requested to adapt an existent underwater acoustic acquisition system named Ultra Light Vertical Array (ULVA) to fulfil the project requirements. The ULVA system was a vertical instrumented with up to 16 hydrophones and various non-acoustic sensors (thermistors, tiltmeters and pressure gauges). The ULVA system was used during the INTIFANTE project sea trial, where the acquired data were transmitted through a radio link to a remote PC station located in a vessel for storage, monitoring and online processing. In order to overcome data loses due to radio link fails, identified during the INTIFANTE sea trial, and improve the mobility of the vessel where the PC station is located, a must for the ATOMS project, it was decided to transform the ULVA system into an autonomous acquisition system with local storage facilities, lower power consumption, capability of on line remote quality control of the acquired data and positioning information. The first version of this new system, named Ultra Light Vertical Array/Remote Data Acquisition System (ULVA/RDAS), was described in the report. During the sea trial MREA'04 it was found that an auxiliary UHF radio link used to send some commands to the ULVA, like switch on/off the power or switch on/off the array electronics, remains a source of problems in the ULVA/RDAS. Thus, it was decided to remove the UHF link from the system, emulating its facilities by new developed hardware. In this new version (second) of the ULVA/RDAS system, it was also introduced a new monitoring software, in order to improve its robustness and share a common user interface with other SiPLAB acquisition systems. This report describes the actual ULVA/RDAS system (version 2) and is intended as a system reference and user guide.FC

    Bank Governance and Performance: A Survey of the Literature

    This paper seeks to review the theoretical and empirical literature on the relationship between bank governance and performance, providing a comprehensive understanding of the existing research and offering guidance for investors and regulators on the major points of consensus and disagreement among researchers on this issue. Although the question of what determines the levels of firms’ performance, with special emphasis on the role of the corporate governance, has long been the subject of substantial academic research, it gained increased attention in the banking industry in the last decade due to a series of financial scandals and, more recently, to the global financial crisis. In fact, in the wake of the 2007–2008 financial crisis, bank corporate governance mechanisms received heightened attention, accompanied by the renewed interest in the degree of effectiveness of such mechanisms, and their impact on performance. Given the vast number of influences on corporate performance, such as the numerous characteristics of the board of directors, there is an abundant literature on the determinants of performance. Thus, this paper tries to bring together this diverse body of knowledge into a coherent whole. Banks have unique attributes that interfere with the way in which the usual corporate governance mechanisms work. Thus, the main differences between banks and non-financial firms, which justify that some of the regularities found in the literature on the relationship between a set of corporate governance mechanisms and performance do not hold for banks, are also analysed. Then, we extensively review the literature on the board of directors and its impact on performance in the financial crisis and non-financial crisis periods.     Modeling in TRNSYS of a single effect evaporation system powered by a Rankine cycle

    The paper presents an analysis of a Single Effect Evaporation (SEE) system as a pre-study to the feasibility of concentrated solar power plants (CSP) powering desalination units for cogeneration of water and electricity. An algorithm to model a SEE system in steady-state operation was made and is described in this work. This algorithm was implemented in TRNSYS environment, and a simple analysis was conducted of a SEE system powered by a Rankine cycle used in CSP plants

    Experimental validation of MED forward feed steady-state model

    In this work the validation of a physical model to simulate the performance of an MED forward feed system is done by comparing results of the model with real data obtained. The data was obtained using the experimental MED plant at Plataforma Solar de Almeria (PSA) under steady-state operation near design conditions. The results indicate that the model can be used to make a first analysis on these type of systems.

    Sequelas da COVID-19 Evidência Atual

    A epidemia de Coronavirus Disease 2019 disseminou-se pelo mundo em poucos meses, levando à sua designação de pandemia. Múltiplas medidas de saúde pública foram implementadas nos países afetados para conter e mitigar a disseminação da doença. A necessidade de distanciamento físico leva a que esta pandemia tenha um impacto importante na sociedade e particularmente no desporto, provocando cancelamento e adiamento de treinos, competições e eventos. No entanto, o início da pandemia data já de 2019, com preocupações globais, não só na fase aguda da doença com as suas consequências imediatas, mas também com as eventuais sequelas a médio e a longo prazo e o risco de cronicidade de alguns sintomas, em particular na população jovem. Neste artigo revemos a limitada evidência científica atual acerca da relevância clínica das sequelas da COVID-19, em particular do foro respiratório e cardíaco, e finalizamos com recomendações de avaliação das sequelas em atletas e com indicações para regresso seguro à prática desportiva.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Flashing LEDs for microalgal production

    Flashing lights are next-generation tools to mitigate light attenuation and increase the photosynthetic efficiency of microalgal cultivation systems illuminated by light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Optimal flashing light conditions depend on the reaction kinetics and properties of the linear electron transfer chain, energy dissipation, and storage mechanisms of a phototroph. In particular, extremely short and intense light flashes potentially mitigate light attenuation in photobioreactors without impairing photosynthesis. Intelligently controlling flashing light units and selecting electronic components can maximize light emission and energy efficiency. We discuss the biological, physical, and technical properties of flashing lights for algal production.
