Uncovering Photolyase/Cryptochrome Genes Diversity in Aquatic Microbiomes Exposed to Diverse UV-B Regimes
During evolution, microorganisms exposed to high UV-B doses developed a fine-tuned photo-enzymes called ?photolyases? to cope with DNA damage by UV-B. These photoreceptors belonging to the Cryptochrome/Photolyase Family (CPF) were well characterized at the genomic and proteomic level in bacteria isolated from a wide range of environments. In this work, we go further towards studying the abundance of CPF on aquatic microbial communities from different geographic regions across the globe. Metagenomics data combined with geo-referenced solar irradiation measurements indicated that the higher the UV-B dose suffered by the microbiome´s environment, the higher the abundance of CPF genes and lower the microbial diversity. A connection between CPF abundance and radiation intensity/photoperiod was reported. Likewise, cryptochrome-like genes were found abundant in most exposed microbiomes, indicating a complementary role to standard photolyases. Also, we observed that CPFs are more likely present in dominant taxa of the highly irradiated microbiomes, suggesting an evolutionary force for survival and dominance under extreme solar exposure. Finally, this work reported three novel CPF clades not identified so far, proving the potential of global metagenomic analyses in detecting novel proteins.Fil: Alonso Reyes, Daniel Gonzalo.

Human Activity Recognition by Sequences of Skeleton Features
In recent years, much effort has been devoted to the development of applications capable
of detecting different types of human activity. In this field, fall detection is particularly relevant,
especially for the elderly. On the one hand, some applications use wearable sensors that are integrated
into cell phones, necklaces or smart bracelets to detect sudden movements of the person wearing
the device. The main drawback of these types of systems is that these devices must be placed
on a person’s body. This is a major drawback because they can be uncomfortable, in addition to
the fact that these systems cannot be implemented in open spaces and with unfamiliar people. In
contrast, other approaches perform activity recognition from video camera images, which have many
advantages over the previous ones since the user is not required to wear the sensors. As a result, these
applications can be implemented in open spaces and with unknown people. This paper presents a
vision-based algorithm for activity recognition. The main contribution of this work is to use human
skeleton pose estimation as a feature extraction method for activity detection in video camera images.
The use of this method allows the detection of multiple people’s activities in the same scene. The
algorithm is also capable of classifying multi-frame activities, precisely for those that need more than
one frame to be detected. The method is evaluated with the public UP-FALL dataset and compared
to similar algorithms using the same dataset. This research was supported in part by the Chilean Research and Development Agency

BERT for Activity Recognition Using Sequences of Skeleton Features and Data Augmentation with GAN
Recently, the scientific community has placed great emphasis on the recognition of human activity, especially in the area of health and care for the elderly. There are already practical applications of activity recognition and unusual conditions that use body sensors such as wrist-worn devices or neck pendants. These relatively simple devices may be prone to errors, might be uncomfortable to wear, might be forgotten or not worn, and are unable to detect more subtle conditions such as incorrect postures. Therefore, other proposed methods are based on the use of images and videos to carry out human activity recognition, even in open spaces and with multiple people. However, the resulting increase in the size and complexity involved when using image data requires the use of the most recent advanced machine learning and deep learning techniques. This paper presents an approach based on deep learning with attention to the recognition of activities from multiple frames. Feature extraction is performed by estimating the pose of the human skeleton, and classification is performed using a neural network based on Bidirectional Encoder Representation of Transformers (BERT). This algorithm was trained with the UP-Fall public dataset, generating more balanced artificial data with a Generative Adversarial Neural network (GAN), and evaluated with real data, outperforming the results of other activity recognition methods using the same dataset. This research was supported in part by the Chilean Research and Development Agency (ANID) under Project FONDECYT 1191188, The National University of Distance Education under Projects 2021V/-TAJOV/00 and OPTIVAC 096-034091 2021V/PUNED/008, and the Ministry of Science and Innovation of Spain under Project PID2019-108377RB-C32

Using Augmented Reality in Remote Laboratories
This paper introduces the concept of “augmented reality” as a novel way to enhance visualization in remote laboratories for engineering education. In a typical remote experimentation session, students get access to a remote real plant located at the laboratory to carry out their assignments. Usually, the graphical user interface allows users to watch the equipment by video stream in live. However, in some cases, visual feedback by video stream could be enhanced by means of augmented reality techniques, which mix together in one image, the video stream and computer generated data. Such mixture produces an added value to remote experimentation, increasing the sense of presence and reality, and helping to understand much better the concepts under study. In this work, a Java-based approach to be used in the remote experimentation context for pedagogical purposes is presented. Firstly, a pure Java example is given to readers (including the source code) and then, a more sophisticated example using a Java-based open source tool known as Easy Java Simulations is introduced. This latter option takes advantage of a new developed component, called camimage, which is an easy-to-use visual element that allows authors to capture video stream from IP cameras in order to mix real images with computer generated graphics
Curcumin and Ethanol Effects in Trembler-J Schwann Cell Culture.
Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) syndrome is the most common progressive human motor and sensory peripheral neuropathy. CMT type 1E is a demyelinating neuropathy affecting Schwann cells due to peripheral-myelin-protein-22 (PMP22) mutations, modelized by Trembler-J mice. Curcumin, a natural polyphenol compound obtained from turmeric (Curcuma longa), exhibits dose- and time-varying antitumor, antioxidant and neuroprotective properties, however, the neurotherapeutic actions of curcumin remain elusive. Here, we propose curcumin as a possible natural treatment capable of enhancing cellular detoxification mechanisms, resulting in an improvement of the neurodegenerative Trembler-J phenotype. Using a refined method for obtaining enriched Schwann cell cultures, we evaluated the neurotherapeutic action of low dose curcumin treatment on the PMP22 expression, and on the chaperones and autophagy/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathways in Trembler-J and wild-type genotypes. In wild-type Schwann cells, the action of curcumin resulted in strong stimulation of the chaperone and macroautophagy pathway, whereas the modulation of ribophagy showed a mild effect. However, despite the promising neuroprotective effects for the treatment of neurological diseases, we demonstrate that the action of curcumin in Trembler-J Schwann cells could be impaired due to the irreversible impact of ethanol used as a common curcumin vehicle necessary for administration. These results contribute to expanding our still limited understanding of PMP22 biology in neurobiology and expose the intrinsic lability of the neurodegenerative Trembler-J genotype. Furthermore, they unravel interesting physiological mechanisms of cellular resilience relevant to the pharmacological treatment of the neurodegenerative Tremble J phenotype with curcumin and ethanol. We conclude that the analysis of the effects of the vehicle itself is an essential and inescapable step to comprehensibly assess the effects and full potential of curcumin treatment for therapeutic purposes.TThis research was funded by the Comisión Sectorial de Investigación Científica de la Universidad de la República (CSIC I+D, 2013), Agencia Nacional de Investigación e Innovación (ANII, FCE_1_2019_1_155539) and Programa de Desarrollo de Ciencias Básicas (PEDECIBA, CCA-Bio/Res. 6.1-2/4/2019).
