    Parametric Competition in non-autonomous Hamiltonian Systems

    In this work we use the formalism of chord functions (\emph{i.e.} characteristic functions) to analytically solve quadratic non-autonomous Hamiltonians coupled to a reservoir composed by an infinity set of oscillators, with Gaussian initial state. We analytically obtain a solution for the characteristic function under dissipation, and therefore for the determinant of the covariance matrix and the von Neumann entropy, where the latter is the physical quantity of interest. We study in details two examples that are known to show dynamical squeezing and instability effects: the inverted harmonic oscillator and an oscillator with time dependent frequency. We show that it will appear in both cases a clear competition between instability and dissipation. If the dissipation is small when compared to the instability, the squeezing generation is dominant and one can see an increasing in the von Neumann entropy. When the dissipation is large enough, the dynamical squeezing generation in one of the quadratures is retained, thence the growth in the von Neumann entropy is contained

    Nonsequential Double Ionization with Polarization-gated Pulses

    We investigate laser-induced nonsequential double ionization by a polarization-gated laser pulse, constructed employing two counter-rotating circularly polarized few cycle pulses with a time delay TdT_{d}. We address the problem within a classical framework, and mimic the behavior of the quantum-mechanical electronic wave packet by means of an ensemble of classical electron trajectories. These trajectories are initially weighted with the quasi-static tunneling rate, and with suitably chosen distributions for the momentum components parallel and perpendicular to the laser-field polarization, in the temporal region for which it is nearly linearly polarized. We show that, if the time delay TdT_{d} is of the order of the pulse length, the electron-momentum distributions, as functions of the parallel momentum components, are highly asymmetric and dependent on the carrier-envelope (CE) phase. As this delay is decreased, this asymmetry gradually vanishes. We explain this behavior in terms of the available phase space, the quasi-static tunneling rate and the recollision rate for the first electron, for different sets of trajectories. Our results show that polarization-gating technique may provide an efficient way to study the NSDI dynamics in the single-cycle limit, without employing few-cycle pulses.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure

    Finding Out The Neurological Consequences Of Covid-19

    t- Introduction: Since the first official case of COVID-19 in China in December 2019, researchers have been trying to uncover the mechanism of action of the severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2 (Sars-CoV-2), which attacks several organs in addition to the lungs and causes circulatory changes that can lead to death not only from lung failure but also due to commitment of other organs. Objective: The aim of this study is to find out the neurological consequences of COVID-19. Material and methods: A systematic review of the literature was concretised by mobilizing the descriptors: "Sars-Cov-2", "coronavirus infections" and "Neurological Consequences". Databases were selected and seven articles were included for analysis. Results and discussion: Although the effects of Sars-CoV-2 on the lung are exemplary and frightening, the long-term effects on the nervous system may be greater and even more overwhelming, as the regeneration of nerve tissue is difficult and can lead to general disability, as the nervous system coordinates the functions of the entire body. All studies show the presence of any kind of injury (mild or severe) to Central Nervous System, but some of them highlight the need for further studies to have great certainty. Conclusion: It can be said that the studies all agree on the possibility of existing neurological sequelae and a majority agree on the need for other studies.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Interference effects in above-threshold ionization from diatomic molecules: determining the internuclear separation

    We calculate angle-resolved above-threshold ionization spectra for diatomic molecules in linearly polarized laser fields, employing the strong-field approximation. The interference structure resulting from the individual contributions of the different scattering scenarios is discussed in detail, with respect to the dependence on the internuclear distance and molecular orientation. We show that, in general, the contributions from the processes in which the electron is freed at one center and rescatters off the other obscure the interference maxima and minima obtained from single-center processes. However, around the boundary of the energy regions for which rescattering has a classical counterpart, such processes play a negligible role and very clear interference patterns are observed.     Peri-operative anaphylaxis in Coimbra: the experience of our drug allergy clinic

    Background: The incidence of peri-operative anaphylactic reactions ranges from 1:10,000 to 1:20,000. It is crucial to identify the risk factors, the trigger agent and to fi nd adequate alternatives. Aims: To characterise patients with peri-operative anaphylactic reactions. Methods: We performed a retrospective study of patients with suspected adverse peri-operative reactions to anaesthetic drugs, observed in a Drug Allergy Outpatients Clinic from 1994 to 2005. Anaphylaxis was diagnosed based on the clinical history and skin tests to latex, neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBA), hypnotics, opioids and antibiotics. Specifi c IgE to latex was performed in patients with positive skin-prick-tests. Results: We evaluated the clinical charts of 45 patients with adverse peri-operative reactions, 39 of whom were female. Anaphylaxis was diagnosed in 16 patients (35.6%), 15 females, mean age 36.3 years. The remaining patients had non-anaphylactic (28.8%) or not well-characterised reactions (35.6%). In terms of severity, 50% presented grade III and 50% grade IV anaphylaxis. Skin-prick-tests were positive to latex in three patients and negative to all anaesthetic drugs. Intradermal skin tests were positive in 10 out of 16 patients with anaphylactic reactions: 10 to NMBA [atracurium (n = 8), vecuronium (n = 4), suxamethonium (n = 4) and pancuronium (n = 2)], one to fentanyl, one to thiopental and one to cefuroxime. In three cases, the culprit agent was not identifi ed. In four patients, at least one alternative NMBA, with no skin test reactivity, was found. Of these four patients, two underwent further surgical procedures without adverse reactions. Five patients had previously had two or more anaesthetic procedures and four had presented adverse reactions in prior surgeries. Conclusions: In our study the most common causes of anaphylaxis were NMBAs (62.5%) and latex (18.7%), in line with that described in the literature. In 81% of patients with anaphylactic reactions, skin tests were positive to at least one anaesthetic drug or to latex. A high incidence of severe anaphylaxis was found, probably because cases with less severe clinical signs were not referred to our clinic. The results emphasise the need for systematic evaluation of anaphylactic reactions during anaesthesia. This can be achieved by the creation of a specialised Allergo-Anaesthesia Clinic, as has been the case in our Department

    Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus associated with tenofovir administration: report of a paediatric case

    Tenofovirrenal toxicity, particularly when associated with other antiretrovirals, has been reported in the adult HIV-positive population. Reports in HIVpositive children are very rare. The authors report a paediatric case of nephrotoxicity associated with tenofovir and didanosine, emtricitabine and lopinavirritonavir coadministration. A 12-year-old girl with AIDS (clinical stage C) with a multidrug-resistant virus and several treatment failures initiated emtricitabine, tenofovir, didanosine and lopinavir-ritonavir in 2008 with good tolerance. Her viral load became undetectable and CD4 count normal. Two years later she presented generalized weakness, polydipsia and polyuria. On physical examination dehydration was evident. Her vital signs were stable. She had lost 5% of her body weight in the previous week. Urinalysis revealed a urine gravity of 1000, osmolality 150 mOsm/Kg and no proteinuria or glucosuria. Blood analysis showed osmolality 289 mOsm/Kg, normal values of glucose, creatinine, urea, sodium, potassium, chloride and calcium. A water restriction test followed by desmopressin administration confirmed the diagnosis of nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. Tenofovir and didanosine were stopped and abacavir was added. The patient was treated with a thiazide diuretic and salt restriction. There was good clinical evolution and no relapses. This case highlights important possible side effects of tenofovir and emphasises the need for further studies into the renal safety of this agent in paediatric patients

    Genetic and phenotypic characterization of isolates of Pyricularia grisea from the rice cultivars Epagri 108 and 109 in the State of Tocantins.

    Foi constatada a ocorrência de uma epidemia de brusone, na safra 1998/99 nas cultivares de arroz (Oryza sativa) irrigado Epagri 108 e 109, nos municípios de Lagoa da Confusão e Duerê, do Estado do Tocantins, na safra 1998-99. Foram utilizados "DNA fingerprinting" e análise fenotípica de virulência para determinar a diversidade entre isolados de Pyricularia grisea coletados nestas duas cultivares no ano de epidemia. A análise de DNA dos isolados foi realizada utilizando rep-PCR para amplificação das sequências entre os elementos repetitivos Pot2. Dois grupos distintos de bandas polimórficas ou linhagens foram identificados entre os 53 isolados coletados em nove diferentes lavouras comerciais. O padrão de virulência dos isolados foi estudado através de inoculações artificiais em 32 genótipos, em casa de vegetação. O dendrograma construído com base nos dados de virulência fenotípica, permitiu distinguir apenas um grupo, considerando o nível de similaridade de 77%. O patótipo predominante IB-45 foi representado por 47 dos 53 isolados correspondendo a 83%. Foram identificados quatro patótipos (IB-1, IB-9, IB-13 e IB-41) entre isolados coletados nestas duas cultivares. Não houve relação entre agrupamento dos isolados por rep-PCR e patótipos. Os resultados ainda demonstraram que os isolados de P. grisea provenientes das cultivares Epagri 108 e 109 apresentaram estreita diversidade fenotípica e genética. A epidemia da brusone nestas duas cultivares, um ano após o lançamento, pode ser atribuída ao surgimento do novo patótipo IB-45 ou à sua preexistência em baixa freqüência e rápido aumento no campo

    Time evolution of non-Hermitian Hamiltonian systems

    We provide time-evolution operators, gauge transformations and a perturbative treatment for non-Hermitian Hamiltonian systems, which are explicitly time-dependent. We determine various new equivalence pairs for Hermitian and non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, which are therefore pseudo-Hermitian and in addition in some cases also invariant under PT-symmetry. In particular, for the harmonic oscillator perturbed by a cubic non-Hermitian term, we evaluate explicitly various transition amplitudes, for the situation when these systems are exposed to a monochromatic linearly polarized electric field.Comment: 25 pages Latex, 1 eps figure, references adde
