    THE MIDDLE TRIASSIC OF THE BREMBANA VALLEY: PRELIMINARY STUDY OF THE ESINO PLATFORM (Bergamasc Alps)

    The stratigraphy and paleogeography of the ladinian Esino Limestone outcropping in Valle Brembana-Valle Parina, have been integrated with the biostratigraphic analysis of cephalopod fauna. A complex internal structure of the upper anisian-ladinian Esino carbonate platform has been identified. Six different lithozones have been recognized, they record the stratigraphic-paleogeographic evolution of the Esino Limestone. This carbonate platform developed through three stages: 1) construction of a lower edifice (Late Anisian-? Early Ladinian) representing the first phase of carbonate piatform diffusion on structural highs, which were already the site of carbonate deposition during the Middle Anisian (peritidal dolomites of the Angolo Limestone); 2) buildup of the carbonate complex (main edifice). In this second phase (Early Ladinian-Late Ladinian p.p.) the most important one, the platform growth took place by prevalent aggradation; 3) development of the upper edifice and progradation of the piatform in the Late Ladinian. In this third phase, inner plarform facies with diagenetic caps at the top of peritidal cycles are common. The buildup developed in the second phase yields bioclastic packstones with ammonoids, gastropods, echinoderms, and bivalves clustered within lithozone 4 and in the proximity of the southern margin of the platform in Val Parina. Studies in progress of ammonoids and gastropods allowed for the recognition of different fossil assemblages which date from Early Ladinian to Late Ladinian. A few problematic ammonoid assemblage of probably Early Ladinian age, has been found in a stratigraphic level above the base of the Esino Limestone

    The CloudSME Simulation Platform and its Applications: A Generic Multi-cloud Platform for Developing and Executing Commercial Cloud-based Simulations

    Simulation is used in industry to study a large variety of problems ranging from increasing the productivity of a manufacturing system to optimizing the design of a wind turbine. However, some simulation models can be computationally demanding and some simulation projects require time consuming experimentation. High performance computing infrastructures such as clusters can be used to speed up the execution of large models or multiple experiments but at a cost that is often too much for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). Cloud computing presents an attractive, lower cost alternative. However, developing a cloud-based simulation application can again be costly for an SME due to training and development needs, especially if software vendors need to use resources of different heterogeneous clouds to avoid being locked-in to one particular cloud provider. In an attempt to reduce the cost of development of commercial cloud-based simulations, the CloudSME Simulation Platform (CSSP) has been developed as a generic approach that combines an AppCenter with the workflow of the WS-PGRADE/gUSE science gateway framework and the multi-cloud-based capabilities of the CloudBroker Platform. The paper presents the CSSP and two representative case studies from distinctly different areas that illustrate how commercial multi-cloud-based simulations can be created

    Enabling Cloud-based Computational Fluid Dynamics with a Platform-as-a-Service Solution

    Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is widely used in manufacturing and engineering from product design to testing. CFD requires intensive computational power and typically needs high performance computing to reduce potentially long experimentation times. Dedicated high performance computing systems are often expensive for small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs). Cloud computing claims to enable low cost access to high performance computing without the need for capital investment. The CloudSME Simulation Platform aims to provide a flexible and easy to use cloud-based Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) technology that can enable SMEs to realize the benefits of high performance computing. Our Platform incorporates workflow management and multi-cloud implementation across various cloud resources. Here we present the components of our technology and experiences in using it to create a cloud-based version of the TransAT CFD software. Three case studies favourably compare the performance of a local cluster and two different clouds and demonstrate the viability of our cloud-based approach

    Monitoring of the conservation state of the internal wall surfaces of Room with Golden Vault in the Domus Aurea

    This project describes the monitoring campaign, performed in situ with the collaboration of Konica Minolta Sensing Europe, in order to verify the actual conservation state of the internal wall surfaces of the Room with Golden Vault in the Domus Aurea in Rome. Particularly, the main aim of this work was to evaluate the problems caused by aggressive environmental conditions (combination of low air temperature and high relative humidity). During this survey, characterized by the integrated use of two and three-dimensional techniques, the environmental conditions were carefully monitored. Reference sample regions of the vault were acquired by means of the 3D laser scanner Konica Minolta Vivid 9i (optical triangulation-based) that allows capturing morphological details of the stucco decorations with a good resolution. Moreover, each detailed scan was supplied with related high resolution images taken by a digital reflex camera Olympus E-510 rigidly connected to the scanner. In Cultural Heritage monitoring applications it is important to integrate the data acquired with different instruments and techniques. Therefore, by this methodological approach, it has been possible to integrate both two and three dimensional data by the projection of the acquired images on the corresponding digital model. In order to complete the cognitive framework of the vault, systematic measures of spectrophotometry by means of the portable spectrophotometer Minolta 2600d were also carried out. The digital data, collected and elaborated by this monitoring campaign, allowed to create a database of morphological information, high resolution digital images, colorimetric values and reflectance curves that may be used in the future as reference data to periodically monitor the conservation state of the surfaces

    Microscopic origin of random telegraph noise fluctuations in aggressively scaled RRAM and its impact on read disturb variability

    Random telegraph noise (RTN) is an important intrinsic phenomenon of any logic or memory device that is indicative of the reliability and stochastic variability in its performance. In the context of the resistive random access memory (RRAM), RTN becomes a key criterion that determines the read disturb immunity and memory window between the low (LRS) and high resistance states (HRS). With the drive towards ultra-low power memory (low reset current) and aggressive scaling to 10 × 10 nm2 area, contribution of RTN is significantly enhanced by every trap (vacancy) in the dielectric. The underlying mechanisms governing RTN in RRAM are yet to be fully understood. In this study, we aim to decode the role of conductance fluctuations caused by oxygen vacancy transport and inelastic electron trapping and detrapping processes. The influence of resistance state (LRS, shallow and deep HRS), reset depth and reset stop voltage (VRESET-STOP) on the conductance variability is also investigated. © 2013 IEEE

    The Penetration–Aspiration Scale: Adaptation to Open Partial Laryngectomy and Reliability Analysis

    A standard for assessing swallowing function after open partial horizontal laryngectomy (OPHL) is still not established. The variability in the measures used to investigate swallowing functional outcomes after OPHL limits the communication among clinicians and the possibility to compare and combine results from different studies. The study aims to adapt the PAS to the altered anatomy after OPHLs using fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) and to test its reliability. To adapt the PAS, two landmarks were identified: the entry of the laryngeal vestibule and the neoglottis. Ninety patients who underwent an OPHL were recruited (27 type I, 31 type II and 32 type III). FEES was performed and video-recorded. Two speech and language therapists (SLTs) independently rated each FEES using the PAS adapted for OPHL (OPHL-PAS). FEES recordings were rated for a second time by both SLTs at least 15 days from the first video analysis. Inter- and intra-rater agreement was assessed using unweighted Cohen's kappa. Overall, inter-rater agreement of the OPHL-PAS was k\u2009=\u20090.863, while intra-rater agreement was k\u2009=\u20090.854. Concerning different OPHL types, inter- and intra-rater agreement were k\u2009=\u20090.924 and k\u2009=\u20090.914 for type I, k\u2009=\u20090.865 and k\u2009=\u20090.790 for type II, and k\u2009=\u20090.808 and k\u2009=\u20090.858 for type III, respectively. The OPHL-PAS is a reliable scale to assess the invasion of lower airway during swallowing in patients with OPHL using FEES. The study represents the first attempt to define standard tools to assess swallowing functional outcome in this population
