The 'Washington Consensus' analysis and policies are being disputed both analytically and for their effectiveness.This paper surveys first the debate on the definition of the 'Washington Consensus' vis-a-vis its apparent developmental shortcomings. Then it surveys the major areas where the 'Washington Consensus' isjudged as a failure (with articular emphasis on the crises of the 1990s).In the next part it presents the main responses to the 'crisis' of the 'Washington Consensus'. Its supporters are categorised in tre fundamentalists and the reformists whereas its opponents are divided in the post-Washington Consensus adherents and the Marxist critics. It is argued that the Marxist perspective offers a superior understanding and critique of the 'Washington Consensus'

Neolithic pottery groups from the Agia Triada Cave, southern Euboea, and the Aegean Late Neolithic: some remarks

Στο κείμενο που ακολουθεί παρουσιάζονται τα προκαταρκτικά συμπεράσματα της εν εξελίξει μελέτης του υλικού των ανασκαφών που πραγματοποιήθηκαν κατά τα έτη 2007-2010 στο σπήλαιο της Αγίας Τριάδας Καρύστου. 1 Από τα έως τώρα δεδομένα προκύπτει ότι ορισμένα κεραμικά σύνολα διαφορο- ποιούνται ως προς τα τυπο-τεχνολογικά τους χαρακτηριστικά από την κεραμική της Νεότερης Νεο- λιθικής ΙΙ. Η πιο χαρακτηριστική κατηγορία είναι η γραπτή κεραμική με λευκή διακόσμηση σε σκούρο βάθος που χαρακτηρίζει τη Νεότερη Νεολιθική Ι περίοδο των νησιών του κεντρικού, ανατολικού Αι- γαίου και άλλων περιοχών. Ο μικρός αριθμός αντιπροσωπευτικών οστράκων και η κακή κατάσταση διατήρησης τους δυσχεραίνουν ιδιαίτερα τη μελέτη

Uncertainty avoidance and stock price informativeness of future earnings

We explore whether uncertainty avoidance, an important aspect of national culture, influences the level of informativeness of share prices about future earnings. Uncertainty avoidance relates to the extent to which the members of a society feel threatened by uncertain or unknown situations. We employ data from 20 countries, comprising of 26,882 firm-year observations reporting under the same accounting standards. Using panel data analysis with OLS regressions, we show that firms’ current stock returns incorporate less future earnings information in countries with high uncertainty avoidance. Further, we report that this relation is less pronounced within countries with relatively high market openness, consistent with the premise that the effect of national culture is reduced when a country’s market is more open to foreign investors. Our study contributes to the literature by showing that international investors’ innate differences affect their ability to anticipate future earnings and impound this information into current prices. As such, the benefits of adopting a common set of accounting standards are uneven across countries not only because of the way the standards are applied but also due to investors’ innate differences

Identification of soil-structure interaction effects based on geodetic monitoring of a railway bridge

The monitoring of bridges using geodetic methodologies permits the direct measurement of displacements and potential identification of effects of soil-structure interaction. In this study the response of the historical Gorgopotamos railway (Central Greece) has been measured using a Robotic Total Station (RTS) during the passage of trains on different times of the year and under various soil conditions. The measurements revealed that the initial impact response of the deck to the train loading presents differences which seem to correlate with the differences in the moisture content of the bridge foundation ground

A 3D spatial approach to post-excavation study, as exemplified at the Agia triada Cave, Karystos

Η εργασία συνοψίζει τα αποτελέσματα της προσπάθειας αναβάθμισης ενός συμβατικού ανασκαφικού αρχείου με τη χρήση τεχνολογιών Γεωγραφικών Συστημάτων Πληροφοριών (ΓΣΠ), με στόχο τη δια- χείριση των δεδομένων, την υποστήριξη της στρωματογραφικής ανάλυσης και την οπτική διερεύνηση της χωρικής κατανομής των ευρημάτων στις τρεις διαστάσεις (3Δ). Το ανασκαφικό πρόγραμμα στο σπήλαιο της Αγίας Τριάδας, στη Νότια Εύβοια, λειτούργησε ως περίπτωση εφαρμογής όπου επιχει- ρήθηκε η ενσωμάτωση διαφόρων τύπων ανασκαφικών δεδομένων (καταχωρίσεις ανασκαφικού ημε- ρολογίου, σχέδια, κατάλογοι ευρημάτων, φωτογραφίες) σε ένα συνεκτικό σύνολο δεδομένων για 3Δ ΓΣΠ. Ο συνδυασμός όλων των τεκμηρίων σε ένα ενιαίο ψηφιακό αρχείο συντέλεσε στην αρτιότερη διαχείριση, την πρόσβαση και την αντιπαραβολή των πληροφοριών. Η χωρική αναπαράσταση στις τρεις διαστάσεις και η οπτική διερεύνηση των δεδομένων συνέβαλε στη συγκρότηση ενός χρήσιμου αναλυτικού μέσου για την τρέχουσα μετα-ανασκαφική μελέτη που επέτρεψε την καλύτερη κατανό- ηση των πολύπλοκων στρωματογραφικών και ταφονομικών συνθηκών εντός του σπηλαίου. Σε αυτό το πλαίσιο, η χρήση της ψηφιακής τεχνολογίας για την αναδιάρθρωση παλαιότερων ή συμβατικών συλλογών δεδομένων σε νέα συγκρίσιμα ψηφιακά αρχεία μπορεί να συμβάλλει σημαντικά τόσο στην ενδο-ανασκαφική όσο και στην περιφερειακή αρχαιολογική έρευνα
