Palestinian Refugees in Gaza
Events since Arthur Helton\u27s death - including the change in leadership of the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli proposal for disengagement from Gaza make it even timelier to examine some practical solutions. For improving Palestinian lives in the short term, much can be learned from the approaches taken in other refugee situations. This Article begins with background information on Palestinian refugees in Gaza. It then discusses Israeli plans for disengagement from Gaza. In the following section, the Article reviews options for addressing the problems faced by Palestinian refugees in Gaza, utilizing the broader literature devoted to the integration of refugees and displaced persons in post-conflict and post-occupation societies. It concludes with an agenda of action for the international community, Palestinian Authority, and Israel
The predictive role of parenting practices and family functioning on the core symptoms of ADHD
Cette étude vise à examiner la relation entre les pratiques parentales utilisées durant la période de l'enfance et les dimensions principales du du trouble déficitaire de l'attention avec hyperactivité (TDAH) à l'adolescence, soit l’inattention, l’hyperactivité et l’impulsivité. Les pratiques spécifiques parentales (engagement, pratiques parentales appropriée, supervision, punitions corporelles, discipline appropriée, discipline sévère et incohérente, discipline verbale positive, félicitations et récompenses, et les attentes claires) et les aspects du fonctionnement familial (communication, résolution de problèmes, rôles dans la famille, sensibilité affective, engagement affectif, contrôle comportemental) ont été examinés par rapport à l'inattention et d'hyperactivité. Trente-six enfants de 6 à 9 ans et leurs parents ont participé à une étude longitudinale de 5 ans. Il y a un manque d'études longitudinales dans ce domaine et cette étude vise à combler cette lacune. Les résultats ne montrent pas de résultats significatifs dans la relation entre les pratiques parentales utilisées dans l'enfance et les symptômes principaux de l'hyperactivité et l'inattention à l'adolescence. Les études futures devraient se concentrer sur la relation entre la psychopathologie parentale et les principaux symptômes du TDAH de l'enfance à l'adolescence, ainsi que l'impact des pratiques parentales sur ces principaux symptômes.This study aims to examine the relationship between parenting practices used in childhood on one hand and the core symptoms of Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adolescence on the other hand. Specific parenting practices ( involvement, positive parenting, monitoring/supervision, corporal punishment, appropriate discipline, harsh and inconsistent discipline, positive verbal discipline, praise and incentives and clear expectations) and aspects of family functioning were examined ( communication, problem solving, roles, affective responsiveness, affective involvement, behavioural control and general functioning) in relation to inattention and hyperactivity. The sample consisted of 36 participants involved in a 5 year study from childhood (6 to 9 years old) to adolescence (11 to 14 years old). The results do not show significant results in the relationship between parenting practices used in childhood and the core symptoms of hyperactivity and inattention in adolescence. There is a lack of longitudinal studies in this area and this study attempts to fill in this gap. However despite a lack of significant results, past research suggests an important relationship between parental psychopathology, which has been linked with ineffective parenting practices and the persistence of ADHD from childhood to adolescence. Future studies should focus on the relationship between parental psychopathology and the core symptoms of ADHD from childhood to adolescence, as well as the impact of parenting practices on these core symptoms

Hashtag Holocaust: Negotiating Memory in the Age of Social Media
This study examines the representation of Holocaust memory through photographs on the social media platforms of Flickr and Instagram. It looks at how visitors – armed with digital cameras and smartphones – depicted their experiences at the former concentration camps of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Dachau, Sachsenhausen, and Neuengamme. The study’s arguments are twofold: firstly, social media posts about visits to former concentration camps are a form of Holocaust memory, and secondly, social media allows people from all backgrounds the opportunity to share their memories online. Holocaust memory on social media introduces a new, digital kind of memory called “filtered memory.”
This study demonstrates that social media was a form of memory. The photo-based platforms of Flickr and Instagram helped better visualize it: the photographs on these sites were literally and figuratively “filtered.” Users had the ability to select a black and white filter, or ones that lightened or darkened the photographs. Digital cameras and smartphones allowed users to take as many photos as they liked and upload the photo(s) they wished. Figuratively speaking, people chose to present certain parts of their visits on social media platforms. They filtered their experiences and chose the part of their story they wanted to tell.
Building from the varied fields of memory studies, history of the Holocaust, visual culture, dark tourism, and public history, this study demonstrates that social media is a digital archive that historians must consider when writing about historical memory in the twenty-first century

Bracing for Idiopathic Scoliosis: Improving Adherence through Psychological Intervention
Poor treatment adherence is increasingly being recognized as a significant problem in pediatric medicine. For the condition Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis, poor adherence rates to the most non-surgical intervention, orthotic bracing, have become a well-established fact. This treatment modality has been correlated with multiple psychosocial areas of difficulty, including low self image, suicidal ideation, feelings of isolation, social discomfort, depression, an external locus of control, increasing risk taking behavior, high levels of stress, anger, fear, shame, and eating disorders. Since the orthotic bracing has been linked to both poor adherence and to psychosocial problems, an intervention is created to increase adherence through the use of psychosocial techniques. Cognitive behavioral therapy has been used successfully to increase treatment adherence in both adult and pediatric patients. Thus, a comprehensive program is put forth that aims to increase bracing adherence by means of a cognitive behavioral intervention. Additionally, methods for studying the psychometric properties of this intervention are proposed
The Literature of Loss: Modernity, Poetic Prose, and the Tendency Toward Contradiction
This study traces the historical and formal development of poetic prose beginning in the late eighteenth century through the mid to late nineteenth century. Drawing on research in poetics, narrative theory, genre theory, philosophy, and socioeconomic analysis and ideology, this study positions poetic prose—which encompasses lyrical narrative, prose poetry, and other emergent forms of hybridization—as a textual transgression that is a result of, and directly responds to, both the subjective anxieties of, and artistic possibilities made possible by, modernity. From this perspective, the study focuses on modernization’s rapid transformation of social relationships and individual and communal identities and modernity’s correspondence with a new literary expression which stylistically and conceptually exorcises an experience of loss and the contradictory conditions that modern reality has wrought by its rate of unprecedented progress and capitalist rationality.
The first part of this study examines the emergence of poetic prose in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, linking the advent and urgency of modernity with Romanticism. Taking a Marxist approach, this chapter looks at how genre reinforces the rise of class and social disparities. The thesis then looks at the aesthetic theory and practice of William Wordsworth’s Lyrical Ballads, in which the prosification of poetry represents the descent of poetic status, democratization, universality, and a renewal of nature in an increasingly urban and divided landscape, followed by the “impassioned prose” of Thomas De Quincey’s Confessions of an English Opium-Eater, in which the poeticization of prose further distorts class distinctions and the modern reality that supports them and disrupts the utility and linearity of narrative.
The second part of this study investigates the formal properties of Charles Baudelaire’s Paris Spleen and Arthur Rimbaud’s A Season in Hell and French Symbolism’s contributions to the interaction between prose and poetry. This section calls attention to the corruption of language and its figurative use as a more appropriate self-expression of interiority and subjective world building, in which poetic prose responds to the world’s mastery over experience and moral corruption, isolation, and despair displace literary and cultural convention and the meaning which relies on those customs. Lastly, this section also looks at the surface and typography of the poetic prose text and its relationship with the economy and employment of words
